Irish Potatoes—Second Crop.
We are indebted to Mrs. J. A. Alosely,
of this, county for a fine mess of this veg
etable, grown from the matured' roots, of
last summer. They have all the fresh
ness of the young potatoes of May or June,
and. will certainly make quite an addition
to the small stock of winter vegetables
when properly cultivated.

Address Dr. W. fi
Jb@?“ The Qharleston papers murmur
pretty heavily at the discontinuance of the
transportation of the marls, on the. S. C.
Railrod, whereupon the Chronicle & Sen
tinel justifies the Post Office Department,
and throws the onus on the people of
Charleston, who all the time had the pow
er to control - - the matter. The Charles
ton press have made arrangements to have
their papers delivered tit Augusta and
South at the usual time, and Messrs. Dou
glass at Beiuan, contractors for the great
through mail, have made a sub contract
with the Railroad Company, by which the
country of South Carolina are regularly
served as before. South Carolina is the
only sufferer it seems, from the course pur
sued by the Railroad Company. This is
as it should be.
Since the above was in type we notice
that the di3iculty has been settled and the
South Carolina Railroad will carry the
mail as formerly.
Singular Escape.
Not long since Mr. William Bonder Jr.
of this county was driving two spirited hor
ses through a long lane in-the western, part
of this, county, one, of them, stumbled apd
fell against the tongue which broke short
off. As they were going down hill the
buggy ran on the horses vyhich frightened
them and they were off quick as thought.
The driver jumped out and Mr. B. was
either thrown out or jumped out; his cloak
caught, in the axletree and he. vyas dragged
some, distance and so severely stu.uned as
to lose his consciousness for awhile. The
frightened horses soon overtook Mr. and
Mrs. Stowe of Columbia county who were
in. a buggy and could turn neither to the
right or left owing to a deep gully and
fense op either Ude, And what is singu
lar enough ran o.yei:. ^em in such a way as
to leave Mr. B’s buggy pretty much on top
of theirs crashing it up, hut leaving them
uninjured. Both buggies were badly bro
ken, but no serious injury-accrued to, either
of the parties. Mr. Bonner’s cloak was
found, twisted tightly round the axletree.

The National Lodge of Knights of Jeri
cho, at its recent adjourned Session abol
ished that feature in its constitution which
did not allow subordinate Lodges to grant
honorable dismissals from the order, and
established jn its stead the Nazarene De
gree which is to be binding for life. This
is just as it should be, and we doubt not
an increased impetus will be given to the
spread of the order by this timely action.
into tlie account that of natives thus horn
it takes 21 years for them to become citi
zens, while the great bulk of foreigners
vyho come to this country are not ouly
males, but of age, and admitted to the
elective franchise in some states in a few
days and in others from 1 to 7 year*. So
it is clear that the increase of foreign vo
ters over native is greater than that of the
whole population.
When with all this it is taken into the
account that many of our native voters side
with the foreign influence, and are as com
pletely averse to the religious freedom of
this country, we ask if it is not time for us
to be on the alert, lest the days of the Ja-
cobincs and the hellish Ilhjminati of the
old world break upon us like a clap of thun
der iu a clear sky. Nor iu all this must we
be construed to intimating that Ml foreign
ers are classed in the above sweeping dec
larations. There are honorable exceptions,
among them, we have seen and conversed
with them, and they are wider awake to
the true interests of this country on
this great question than natives generally
are. For they know that the same ele
ments which have more than once kindled
volcanic fires amid the governments of Old
Europe, aud threatened her crumbling dy
nasties with immediate distruction, when
belched forth upon these hospitable shores,
will be elements of danger to the liberties
of the country whenever by emmulation,
they acquire sufficient force, to begin in
good earnest to do the work given them by
their leaders.

Well Said.—What ought to he done
with a gentleman who engages the effec-
tiou of a young lady, and then leaves her ?
Answer—Bless him let him go. We
always think, jn such pases, that a young
lady has abundant cause of congratulation,
and instead of whining and crying over
o;spiff affection,” let her put ou her sun
ny smiles, and endeavor to captivate a
more worthy beau. You may depend up
on it, that a man that hag J19 more stabili
ty of mind, or honesty of purpose, than to
act in this way to a young lady, is not
worth a tear .of regret) on the contrary she
should be especially happy that she has so
luckily got rid of a person who, through
out his life, in whatever he undertook,:
would unquestionably exhibit the same
unfixedness of purpose and the same ir
resolution of mjnd. Love is like every-
thin 77 else 3 a man who is not to be trusted
in that, is very likely to he unsafe in oth
er respects,-—New York Times.
