Anecdote of General Putnam.—
Among the worthies who figured during
vhc era of the American; Revehttion per
Stops there was none possessing more orig
inality of character than General Putnam
who was eccentric and fearless, blunt u
his manner, the daring soldier without
the polish of a gentleman. He might
Well he called the Marion of the north
though lie disliked disguise propably
from the fact of his lisping which was
very apt to overthrow any trickery le
might have n view.
At the time a stronghold called Hon e
Neck some miles from New York was in
possession of the British Putnam with a few
atflrday patriots was lurking in its vicinity
bent on driving them from the place
Tired of lying in ambush the men became
impatient and importuned the Genera,
with questions as to when they were going
to have a bout with the foe. Guo morning
he made a speech something to the follow
ing effect which convinced them that some
thing was in the wind ; “Fellers, you’ve
been idle top long and so have I. I’u
going down to Bush’s, at Horse Neel
with an ox team and a load of corn. 1.
I should come back I will let you know th
particulars. If I should not- let then:
have it, by the hockey !”
He shortly after mounted his ox-eavt
dressed as one the commonest order of
Yankee farmers and at Bush’s tavern,
which was in possession of the Britis-
troops. No sooner did the officers c-spy
Kim than they began to question him as
to his whereabout, and finding him to he
a complete simple, (as tliey thought,) they
began to quiz him and threatened to seize
the com and fodder.
“How much do you ask for your con
cern ?” asked they.
“For mercy’s sake gentleman,” replied
the mock clodhooper, with a most deplora
ble look of entraty, “only let me off an'
you shall have my hull team and load for
nothing and if that won't do, I'll give you
my word I’ll return to morrow and pay
you hartily for your kindness and condos
cension.”
“Well,” said they,” “ we li take you
your word : leave the team and pmvende"
with us, and wo won’t require any bail lor
your appearance.
Putnam gave up the team and sauntered
about an hour or so, gaining all the infor
mation ho wished, lie then returned to
his men and told them of the foe and Ins
plan of attack.
The morning cams and with it sallied
out the gallent band. The British were
handled with rough Inn Is and when the;
surrendered to General Putnam, the clo 1-
hopper ha sarcastically replied ; ‘Gen
tlemen I have kept my word. I told yon
I would call and pay you far your kin 1-
ncss and condescension.”
The Mi!wan’dq Sentinel having placed
upon its bulletin board an announcement
of tha Pacific’s arrival, on which was writ
ten, ‘War in statu quo,’ two men from the
country walked up to the board, and after
reading very demurely, “ War in statu
quo,” said one of them, “ where in thun
ders’s that ?” “T don’t know,” sai l th
other-' “ it’ll spread all over the worl i yet.”
“ Shoullu’t wonder if it did,” said th
first. This reminds the Buffalo (hi a
raorcial of an anektl >te of a person wh
effected profound wisdo n and unlimited in
formation upon every sab net, and who,
while listening with a crowd of compan
ions to the reading of “the latest trom
France,” heard the words, “ The French
have taken umbrage,” and wishing to
show his superior knowledge, broke in
with—"Ah, indeed ! taken u nbrage. have
they ? I knew they had been besieging it
for some time.”
The above reminds us of an occurrence
that took place in a county not a hundred
miles distant from this, a few years ago :—
A subpoena duces tecum was issued for
John Simpkins; hut endorsed thereon.
“ Duces tecum not fount I in m:/ C-nnty.”
•—He asked the Clerk when he r turned
the supoena, if he knew Ducks Tecum!
the Clerk replied that he did not—where
upon the Sheriff remarked, “ he 'is no doubt
some damn’d Dutchman—the county;; is
(jetting full of them!”—Montgomery Mail.
The “Good Word” not Current.—
Grant Thorhurn alias Laurie Todd, sends
us (Boston Musseum) the following rich
an nee dote :
Fifty years ago,Mr. Thorhurn was stand
ing behind his couuter in his little grocery
in Broad street New York when a man en
tered—a little worse for liquor—and called
for something to drink, saying, at the sam
time, that he had no. money, but would
“ pay to-morrow.”
“ My rule is, never, to trust, remark
ed Mr. Thorburn. - •
4 I’ll pay you, certain! exclaimed the
stranerer.
“ There’s no use in coaxing. I never
break my rule,’ replied the iinpertuibn-
ble little Scotchman.
« Wer’l, if y’r a’n’t willurn t trust me
here’s a Bible for security!’ said the man.
taking from his pocket a beautiful gilt
$dged Bible.
i X take nothing for securty but cash,
replied Mr. Thorburn.
The man gazed at the diminutive form
of the little trader through his bleared
eyes for a moment in perfect astonishment,
then turniug on his heel left the store, ex
claiming— _
“ Wer’l, y’r little dried up mack’n if
y’r a’u’t willing to take my word, nor the
word of God, y’r may go to the devil 1”
