How tiie Dutchman Gave a Promi
sor y Note.—If the following amusing
circumstance had been narrated in the
peges of the veracious historian, Diedrich
Knickerbocker, it would have been set
down to the credit of the fertile fancy on
the part of that illustrious historian, rath-
<*r than believed as a fact. But the occur
rence hare detailed is a veritable one, and
happened many years ago in the county of
York, Pennsylvania. It is a forcible il
lustration of that undoubted and unduubt-
ing honesty, which made New Amsterdam
so famous in the olden time.
It seems, from the record, that there
were t wo early German 3ettlers,in the Wes
tern parts of the county, whose names were
Peter and John . Peter had in
creased the size of his farm by annexing to
it- a small tract of land adjoining and be
lacked about a hundred dollars of the sum
which it was necessary' to pay r for his new
acquisition. 1L called upon hii neighbor
John to borrow the amount. John con
sented at once, and going into another room
he brought out an "id bread basket and
counted down the desired number of dol-
l-ars, and then the two sat down to two
large mugs of eider and as many pipes of
tobacco. After smoking over the matter-
for a while, it occurred to Peter that in
similar transactions he had seen or hoard
something like a note, passing between the.
borrower and lender, and he suggested as
much to John. The lender assented to the
course; paper,pen, and
should not be granted".

which she was attended by some of onr bett

what success it accomplishes the purpose designer..
It is easy to make a physical pill, but not f

none of the objections, but all the advantages, a
every other. This has been attempted here. ^
with what success we would respectfully subnet u
the public decision. It has been unfortunate t,
the patient hitherto that almost every purgati*,
medicine is acrimonious and irritating to the tow
els. This is not. Many of them produce so nut*

than counterbalance the good to be derived frv*
them. These pills pro<t»ce no irritation or pm,
unless it arise from a previously existing ebstn*.
tion or derangement in the bowels. Being purely
vegetable, no harm car arise from their nse in aw

be taken judiciously. Minute directions for Ua*
