THE CENTRAL GEORGIAN.

* Not a Drap More, ’thout its Sweetened 1”
We believe that our friend, Col. K. L.
Haralson, formely of Georgia,is entitled to
the credit of the story out of which grew
the expression. He tells it about thus:
Twenty years ago, it was the custom in
North Western Georgia, as indeed it was
throughout the South West, for dry goods
dealers to keep a barrel of “ spehrets” in
the bach room, and to “.treat” liberal cus
tomers to a glass whenever desired. Fillens
& Dewberry were such dealers iu one of the
small towns of the region indicated’; and
they had for a enstomer a clever, frollick-
ing, old fellow named Joe Denny, who
drank whisky in preference to water, always
and whose wife“ flesh of his flesh,” in
that particular. The old couple would
come to town trade quite freely, and quits
as freely imbibe the spirits iu the back
room of the dealers we have named.
On one occasion, both’the old man and
old woman continued their potations inor
dinately; and as Fiilen observed that his
goods went better, the drunker the old wo
man, he pressed her to drink. At last
she refused, unless “ he would sweeten it
with a little store sugar.” The amiable
shopkeeper indulged her, aud when the
old people started home in the evening late,
the old man could barely mount his horse,
and the glide wife had actually to be lifted
and placed on the pillion behind him.—
Happily she leaned one way, and her hus
band the other; so that the gravitating
point was between them—and as she clung
to him instinctivly, they passed out of the
village surety. JJeiore re.iuuing their
home, however, they had to cross a small
creek, and when their horse stopped in it
to drink, the old lady haying reached un
consciousness releasod her hold, and quiet
ly lapsed into the stream below. Occupi
ed with his thoughts, the old man did not
perceive his loss, hut jogged slowly home
ward. Arrived there, his children inquir
ed anxiously for “ mammy,” but the old
man could only sr.y that she had been “on
the critter aud the critter hadn’t kicked
vp nary time, so ho couldn’t say whar she
mought be !” and throw himself) stupid,
on a bed.
Girls aud boys flow along the road tho
old man had come, yelling mammy! mam
mkk ! as they went; but of course no mant-
mj/ responded. When they arrived at the
crook, tho oldest girl shouted “yonder she
is, a-settou’ down in tho crook !” And
there she was, comfortably sooted in tho
water, which curao up nearly to her
mouth. As she swayed back and forth,
now yielding to tho impotuostiy of tho
stream, and now resisting it with some
success, tho mudy fluid would occasion
ally wet hor lips, and each timo it did so,
she would faintly exclaim with a grim ef
fort to smile:
Not a drap morc % Mr. Fillcns, 'thout its
sweetened !
And it is to th.s romantio little incident
in the life of the venerable Mrs. Joo Denny,
that wo are indebted for one of our most
popular colloquial phrases.—Mont. Mail.
A Wkstkhn YVedino Fee.—A minis

villages, in wliichj the primitive manners
of a pioneer life had been smoothod and
polished by rclineineut and cultivation, was
seated in his study one day, endeavoring
to arrange the heads of his to-morrow’s
discourse, when his attention was called by
a loud knock at the door.
The visitor proved to be a tall gawky
shambling countryman, evidently arrayed
in his.Sunday Sjiit, 'and a stout girl, at

Messrs. Scovil X Mead—Gentlemen : The
Hebrew Plaster is becoming popalar in this sec
tion. There is a lady in tins county who say
she would not be without this Plaster for $501
a year. She was afflicted for sente time with an
enlargement of the Spleen which gave her a
great deal of pain. The awelling-and pain had
extended up nearly to the armpit, and occasion
ally she could scarcely breathe. She was con
fined for a considerable length of tune, during
which she was attended by some of onr best
physicians, but they gave’her no relief. She
procured a box of Hebrew Plaster, and itreliev-

There has long existed a public demand hr m
effective purgative pill which could be relied on m
sure and perfectly safe in its operation. This haa
been prepared to meet that demand, and an eaten,
sive trial of its virtues has conclusively shown with
what success it accomplishes the purpose designed.
It is easy to make a physical pili, but not easy to
make the best of all pith — one which should hav«
none of the objections, but all the advantage*, of
every other. This has been attempted here, aad
with what success we would respectfully submit S>
the public decision. It has been unfortnnate for
the patient hitherto that almost every pnrgativ*
medicine is acrimonious and irritating to the boss,
els. This is not. Many of them produce so mvsh
griping pain and revulsion in the system as to mote
than counterbalance the good to be derived free*
them. These pills produce no irritation or paa,
unless it arise from a previously existing obstruc
tion or derangement in the bowels. Being pure^p
vegetable, no harm can arise from their use a u>
quantity; but it is better that anj medicine should
be taken judiciously. Minute directions for tksAr
use in the several diseases to which they are ap
plicable are (riven on the box. Among »ne sea*
plaints which have been speedily cured by them, w»
may mention Liver Complaint, in its various forme
. of Jaundice, Indigestion, Languor and Loss of Ay.
S itite, listlessness, Irritability, Bilious Hcadastm,
ilious FeTer, Fever and Ague, Pain in the Sia.
and Loins; for, in truth, all these are but the con
sequence of diseased action in the liver. As as
aperient, they afford prompt and sure relief in Co»-
trveness, Pile's, Colic, Dysentery, Humors, Scrof
ula and Scurvy, Colds with soreness of the body,
XJlcera and impurity of the blood; in short, say
and every case where a purgative is required.
Tliev nave also produced some singularly suc
cessful cures in Rheumatism, Gout, Dropsy, Gravst,
Erysipelas, Palpitation of the Heart, Pair.s in the
Back, Stomach, and Side. They should be freshr
taken in the spring of the year, to purify the blood,
and prepare the system for the change of seasoso.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and
bowels into healthy action, sad restores the appe
tite and vigor. They purify the blood, and, by thsar
stimulant action on the circulatory system! rea»
vate the strength of the body, and restore tho
wasted or diseased energies of the whole orgaaism.
Hence an occasional dose is advantageous, era*
though no serious derangement exists; but a»-
necessary dosing should never be carried too for,
as every purgative medicine reduces the strsagth,
when taken to excess. The thousand cases in which
a physic is required cannot be enumerated here, hat
they suggest themselves to the reason of evsrr
body; and it is confidently believed this pill wifc
answer a better purpose than any thing which hex
hitherto been available to mankind. When thsir
virtues are once known, the public will no loaem
doubt what remedy to employ when in need of a
cathartic medicine.

“ First rate,” was the satisfactory reply
“ Hold on a jerk,” said Jotham, as he
left his bride abrutptlv, aud departed out
to tile gate where the wagon had been left.
“ What’s you husband gone out for?”
avked the minister somewhat suprised.
“ I expect it’s the sassages,” was the
confused reply.
Just then Jotham made his appearance,
dangling in his hand a pail full of “ sas
sages,” which he handed to the minister,
with a grin of conferring a favor.
“ We hain’t got much money,” said he,
“ and so we thought w^’d pay you in sas
sages. Mother made” em, aud I reckon
they are good. If they ain’t just you send
back, and we'll send you some more.”
A gentleman in Alabama, in exerting

The negro, having investigated the cause,
prepared and administered a dose to his

speedy cure. No relief being experienced,
