A Russian lady, being engaged-to din

minister for foreign affairs, was detained a
full hour by some unexpected accident - .— 1 -
The famished guests, grumbled,' and: look-

trance, one of the company observed to
his neighbor in.Greek, “When a woman
is neither young.'nor handsome, she ought
to arrive betimes.” The lady, turning
pound, sharply accosted the Satirist in the
same language : “When a woman,” said
she, “ has the misfortune to dine with say-

An ¥NBoitTt'N^TE Widow;—Sol.
Smith,in his recently published “Theatrical
Journey work”—by the way an exceed
ingly interesting and amusing volbnme, as
exhibiting the early struggles of the dra
ma in the west aud southwest—relates the
foSe-Wnig odd occaTreuce during his per
egrination in Alabama:
‘4-Between Caleba Swamp and Line
creek, in tbe Nation, we saw a considerable
growd gathered near a drinking-bouse,
mfeelof thorn seated and smoking. We
Stopped to see what was the matter, It was
Sunday, and there had been a quarter race
for a gallon of whiskey. The first thing I
BO^iesd on alighting, was the singular posi
tion of one of the horses of the party.
He was kneeling down and standing on
his hinder feet-, bis head wedged in be
tween the en.sU*of two logs of the.grocery.
asd he was stone dead, having evidently
run directly against the building at full
speed; causing the house partially to fall.
Abjout five'paces from the house lay the
jider, quite senseless, with a gash in his
throat which might have let out a thou
ganl lives. As I said, most of the crowd
were seated and smoking.
“What is all this? I inquired, “What
is the matter' here ?”
Matter ?’ after a while answered in a
drawling voice, giving a good spit,^and re
filling his month witha new quid. ’‘‘Mat
ter enough; there’s been a quarter race-!”
’“But" how came the man and horse
killed?,’ I asked.
“Well,” answered the chewing and
spitting gentleman, “ the man was consid
erably in liquor, I reckon, aud he run his
horse chuck agin the house, and that’s the
whole on’t.”
“ Has a doctor been sent for ? inquired
one of our party.
“I reckon there ain’t much use for doc
tors here,” replied one of the crowd.—
“Burnt brandy eolda’t save either of
’em—man or hoss. ’ ’
“ Has the man a wife and children ?”
inquired I.
“ No children,-that I knows on,” an
swered a female, who was sitting on the
ground a short distance from tns dead
man; smoking composeedly.
“ He has a wife then ?” I remarked.—
“Whatwill be her feelings when she
learns the termination of his most unfro-
ate race ?”
“ Yes,” sighed the female—“it was an
unfortunate race. Boor man, he has lo3t
the whiskey.”
“Do you happen to know his wife ? has
she been informed of the untimely death
of her husband ?” were my next inquiries ?
“ Do I know her ?” Has she been in
formed of his death ?” said the woman.—
“ Well, I reckon you ain't acquainted
about these parts. 1 am the unfortunate
whlder?” .
“ You madam! You the wife of this
man who has been ao untimely cut off?',
I exclaimed ia astonishment. . ' •
“ Yes and what about it T* said' ^he.—
“Untimely cut off? His throat’s cut.

“The play* dragged and dragged and
draped on to the infinite annoyance of
the°students who were keen for the farce.
At length the strapping fellow who “ did”
Richard extended himself upon the stage
to die ; but he was more tenacious of life
than any Stage hero I ever saw. His con.
vulaiohs and contortions were horrible and
most unnecessarily prolonged. Wishing
to end the confounded show I whimpered
to Burleson—“throw your fico on that
fellow and I'll give you a dollar.” No
*ooner said than done. Seizing the fice
by his legs Burleson hurled him at the
rather protuberant abdomen of the gasping
monarch with so true an aim as to produce a
tremendus squelch and grunt from the play

Hebrew Plaster is becoming popular in this sen^ pay mention layer Complaint, in its *
lion. There is a lady in this eounty who savv
she would not be without this Plaster for $500
a year. She was afflicted for some lime with an
enlargement of the Spleen which gave her a
great deal of paiti. The swelling and pain had
extended up nearly to tbe armpit, and occasion
ally she could scarcely breathe. She was con
fined for a considerable length of lime, during
whrch.she was attended by some of »nr best
physicians, bnt they gave her no relief. She
procured a box of Hebrew Plaster, and itreliev-
ed her almost immediately, and now she keeps
a supply of it oa hand constantly. These fact.-
you are at liberty to use as you think proper—
they are substantially true.
