for Flowers.—People do not
always consider that g9od fresh well mixed
pulverized soil is an necessary for the ful
lest deveiiopeinent of flowers in all their
beauty and fragrance as'fof the protection
of fruits and vegetables. Fresh soil made
of sods compost &c., is, perhaps the best
for upland plants. The relative locality
of our finest flowers is usually in a deep
cool soil, ("not cold and clammy) partially
ehrouded by surrounding plants and such
a soil "they always love. VVe have seen
the bloom of a plant increased double in
size and number by an addition ot**jfcjpsb
soil to\the roots and a sharp heading in of
the branches—roses particularly so. A11
flowers indeed when
the knife as well as the esmpost heap
devellope their beauties in -perfection.

We have had the pleasure of another
visit, after die lapse of about two years, of
the Rev J. G. Pearce, Agent of the Amer-

meet with him, though we must confess,
we had some misgivings about his success
in collecting funds for the noble benefac
tion pf which he is the agent, eloquent
and earnest, though-we knew him to be,
and hacked by the best of causes ; yet we
feared failure, entire failure, would be the
result of ’any application for money in this
community at' this time. We took occa
sion to say how sincerely we regretted our
County Eible Society - had not more funds
from the sale of books to turn over to him,
as in that case, it would supersede the ne
cessity of an application to the people for
money. We believe he is not iu the, hab
it of understanding such hints,.or at>least'
of taking them, aud we are'eonstrained to
believe he is right. He has a winning
and convincing way. with him, that can

would do well to take notice of the follow

for every egg they set. Take eggs not
more than three or four days old and hav

to the candle place the edge of the other

immediately perceive the incubation end.

to place your tongue on the large end” of

should never be put"in a damp cellar as the
dampness destroys this heat.
Making Bacon and Putting up Hams
’When the pork has been well saved
veiy important and indispensible preliinin-
hoastful—an old lady^multrfoquious and
a young one silly, we think how necessary
to keep the regulator on. Qr when we see
an old man dissatisfied “ with the ways of
Providence, ,r or an old lady incessantly
grumbling at servants and children We
opine the regulator must have been lost in
youth. When we hear a young roan spout
ing infidel notions coupled with profanity,
or & young lady glib upon the subject of no-
vels(Frencb iu particular)at the same time
exposing her ignorance of History, Geog
raphy, and Grammar, mot to say Music and
drawing, those softening embellishments
and accomplishments of life,—Alas ! we
sigh, will they ever put the regulator on ?
Alas for human folly ! Alas for humanity
Common sense, the prime regulator, is so
little desired, is so little sought for, is so
little understood. But finally, when we see
an old man dealing incossantly in vulgari
ty and low lived anecdotes, . to tickle the
ears of thoughtless youth, we can but
think how needful to keep the regulator
on, since the wisdom of Solomon (though
you bray a fool in the mortar). has failed
upon such a one. He has not; taken “ due
notice thereof and.governed himself accor
dingly.” Or when we see a middle aged
man desirous of public applause and civic
honors, always determined to have his own
way, regardless of the feelings and views
of others, we say the regulator is unhing
ed and will not beat time to his triumph-
march to public honors and success.

has been forced on us—fastened on us—
by our rivals and opponents. For weeks
wore we exposed to ,a storm of' abuse
from all sides for what was called our infer

state of things at the seat of war. Some
writers coolly assured the public the whole
was an invention and that the hideous
complication of fatal neglects described in
our columns Was of home manufacture,
the truth being that all was' going on very
smoothly and comfortably under the pater

this could no longer be maintained one or

what we have said all along, “taking the
