times as mnch invested in any other stock,
because in four years you will have a fence
that will last a life time and perhaps two or

amounts to about this. Plough a place

rich, as ordinary forest land no manure is

Curious IlafiUs of the Brown Sand Hill
Crane—(Grus -Canadensis.)
Many of these noble birds still nest in
this vicinity; but their number is small
compared with the numertms flocks that a
few years sinpe might be seen holding
their strange dances on some favorite kuail
or feeding, while thqir sentinels, judicious
ly .posted, stood ready to give warning q-
any suspicious intruder. ’
Some are incredulousms to the dancing
of cranes. It is true their' movements are
not as graceful as a Frenchman's cr "their

they certainly do. As for their music
though lacking the harmony it is about
as load and melodious as a fashionable opera
air.
The Sand Hill crane is omniverous
devouring pretty much any thing a-en
by birds. The uest is a simple pile of
rushes or grass flat on the top built in
some deep slough or pond. The eggs two
in number are shaped much like those of
the common turkey of a light, amber color
splashed with brown. The uest is usually
surrounded with deep water but the young*
birds swim readily and leave it as soon as
hatched. It js believed bv many that

takes the ground that the Smithsonian In

bearing upon the present controversy going
to show that the testator designed that his

Dear Sir: 3Iy answer to your inquires
will be brief and explicit.
1st. I fully recognise the doctrine of
State rights in its application to slavery as
well as to any other matter of public con
cern.
The Virginia and Kentucky resolutions
of 1798, in the main, as I think correctly
set forth that doctrine.
The whole subject of slavery within
State limite should be left absolutely to
State legislation.
2d- 3Iy response to your second ques
tion is iucluded in my answer to your first.
I do not entertain the opinion that Con
gress has any power to interfere with slave
ry as it exists under State laws
3d. Every man who believes in a God
must necessarily believe that there is a
law paramount to all human law, and that
this law is to be obeyed by men in public
and private life, rather than any human
clothes on the line. When much enrag
ed, he would stand with head and bill
pointed upward, and utter a harsh, croak-
ling sound, quite unlike his usual whoop.
A young crane makes no despicable artic

Audubon supposed this to be ouly the
young of the white crane but he was wrong.
I he white crane ( Grits Americana) is more
of a southern bird, and exceedingly rare
here. I saw a pair flying over this fall
for the first time. These two species are
among the largest and finest of our North
American birds.

The Monks of St. Bernard.—France
has just notified the Republic of Swit
