THB WIT OF JJESSE LEE.
JPapse Lee, one of the fhs& Methodist
ffteaebjsrs in New England", was a man
mbit) astabined? unresting energy and ten-
iflprmBBs- of sensibility, with an extraordi
nary propensity to wit.. Mr- Stephens, in
lib newwonk on- the “Memorials ©f
adtem^” gives the following speoxmea of
■■iee’s bonhommie. ■
As he was riding on horseback, on8
. day, between Boston and Lynn, he was
■overtaken by two young lawyers;. who
knew? that'he was* a Methodist preacher,
-and were disposed to amuse themselves
somewhat at his expense. Saluting Maiv
and ranging- tthorhorses- one each side of
*hfm, they entered into a conxersatioa like
the following : .
1st Lawyer—I believe- Von. a® a preach-
^Lee—Yes ; I generally pass for one.
1st Law—You preach veiy often, I sup-
Jjee—Generally eveiy dhjr; frequently
twice, or more.
2d Law—How do you find time to study
when you preach so often ?
Lee—I study wheu riding* and read
when resting.
1st Law—But do you not write jour
sermons ?
Lee—No; not very often.
2d Law—Do you not often maske mis
takes in preaching extemporaneously.
Lee—-I do, sometimes. .
' 2d Law—How do you do then ! Do you
eorrect them ?
Lee—That depends upon the character
of the mistake. I was preaching the oth
er day, and I went to quote the text, All
liars shall have their part in the lake that
burnetii with fire and brimstona) and, by
mistake, I said, <£ All lawyersc shall have
their part—” ' # ' -
t 2dl Law—i lit erupting him.—W hat did
iyon do with that ? Did yoa correct it l
Lee—O, no, indeed I It was so nearly.
; true, I didn’t think it -worth while to cor
rect it.
“ Humph !” said one of them, (with- a
Jiasjy and impatient- gltuvc-e at the other*)
“-I don’t know whether you are the more
knave or a fool 1”—“Neither,/ he quietly
replied, turning at the same time his. mis-
chievious eyes from one to the other ; “ I
believe I am just between the t%o !” Find
ing they were measuring wit with one of
its masters, and excessively mortified at
their discomfiture, the knights of the green
bag drove ahead, leaving the victor to soli
tude and his own reflections..

The Economical Landlady.—One

ihe butter upon the, allowance of bread
she doled out to her boarders—merely to
save trouble 1 Mr-, Jordan enure home to
tea rather late on the first eveuing of his
new dodge, sat down in presence of all the
other boarders, and received a slice from
Mrs. Wiggins, who- bad gone through the
eeremony of buttering it before his eyes.
Mr. Jordan* eyed the bread inquisitively,
and began, to turn it from side to side, and
scrutinize it closely through his spectacles.
H What is the matter with your bread and
butter ?” demanded Mrs. Wifigins.—
“Nothing—nothing—nothing,” said Mr.
Jordon, still turning the piece over,
and over, and peristing m his scru-
tiuity. “ I’m positive, Mr. Jordan, uiat
something. Oow, I want,-” said

These has long existed a public demand for an
effective purgative pill which eonM be nked on u

been prepared to meet that demand, and an el ten

what success it accomplishes the purpose designed,
