patent jfclcfttcuirg.
Rkv. Dr. Mason.—The great Mason
in his day the most eloquent of preachers
inthe city of New York was in the habit
of walking every morning down the street
to "Washington Market. A certain lawyer
«f no less celebrity in his line was wont
to take the same walk but being earlier
than the Doctor, usually came up the street
as the parson went down. One morning a
deep snow was on the ground, and a single
path only was beaten by the few who had
been out before them/ ‘ The two gentle
men had often met in their walks but never
in private and had not even a speaking
acquaintance. Now they met face to face
and the morning being cold and neither
of them in good"humor they stood waiting
the one for the other to give way by step
ping out .into the snow. Presently the
stalwart divine moved a step toward the
wall > the lawyer came up to pass ; the
Doctor returned too suddenly and bring
ing his shoulder -into contact with the
lawyer’s tipped him into the gutter. The
discomfitted lawyer picked himself up and
as he brushed off the snow very coldly
remarked :
’ “You belong to the Church militant, I
should think.”
' “Ay,’ said the Doctor, as he strode on
ward, “and to the Church triumphant,
tool”
■f.This was not very amiable in the reverend
gentleman, certainly; and he was not
so well reputed for the softer graces as
for pulpit eloquence, in which he was with
out a peer. One of his members left his
church and became attached to one of the
other congregations in this city. lie had
been absent more than a year, when he
chanced to meet the Doctor in the street,
* and attempted to make an apology for hav
ing left. Said he :
“I suppose you have missed me from
your church the year past
“No, I have not,” replied the Doctor,
very gruffly. _ •
• “Yes, I have found an easier road to
heaven than the one you preach.”
“ Easier road, is it ? but you’ll have a
hell of a toll to pay,” said the Doctor as
he pushed by, and-left his quondam par
ishioner to digest the answer.—Harper’s

Waflleigh’s Trial for Sleeping in
Meeting.
Justice Winslow.— What do you know
about John Wadleigh’s sleeping in mec-
ting ? .
Witness.—I know all about it; taint
no secret I guess.
justice.—Then tell us all about it; that s
just what we want to know.
Witness.—(Snatching ’bis head )—
Well the long, and the short ot it is, John
Wadleighisa hard working man ; that
is he works mighty hard doing nothing ;
and that’s the hardest work there is done.
It will make a fellow sledp quicker than
poppy leaves. So it stands to reason thut-
Wadleigh would naterally be a very sleepy
sort of person. Well the weather is
sometimes naterally considerable warm,, and
Parson Moody’s sarmons is sometimes
rather heavy like.
“Stopstop!” Said Justice Winslow,
reflections upon Parson Moody ^ that
is not what you were called here for.”
Witness.—I don’t cast no reflections on
Parson Moody. I was only telling what
I know about John Wadleigh’s sleeping
in meeting ; and it’s my opinion especially
in warm weather, that sarmons that are
heavy-like and two hours long naterally
have a tendency—
“Stop stop ’. ” I say,” said Squire Win
slow ; if you r. p lat any of these rcflcc.
tions on Parson Moody again 111 commit
you to the cage for contempt of court.”
- Witness.— I don’t cast no reflections on
Parson Moody. I was only telling what
I know about John Wadleigh’s sleeping in
meeting.
Squire Winslow—Well go.on and tell
us all about that. You wern’t called here
to testify about Parson Moody.
TVtVness.—-That’s what I am trying to
do if you wouldn’t keep putting me out.
And it’s my opinion in warm weather,
folks is,considerable apt tosleep in meeting,
especially when the sarmon—I mean
especially.where they get pretty tired.
-I know I find it pretty Ward work to get
by seventhly and eighthly in the sarmon
myself.; but if I once ge^by there I gen
-erally get into a kind ofa waking tram
again, and make out to weather it. I>ut
it is’nt so with Wadleigli ; I ve genoni. y
noticed that if he begins to gape at seven
thly and eighthly, it’s a gone goose with
him before he gets through tenthly, and lie
has to look out', for another prop for his
head somewhere, for his-neck i-n t stiff eno-
urrh to hold it up. And from tent Inj
un to sixteenthly he’s as dead as a door
nail till the amen brings the people up to
pfavers and Wadleigh comes up with a
jerk, just like opsmug a jack knite. -V-

I feel it a duty incumbent upon myself to
declare publicly the great blessing Dr. Mar-

For two years mv health was miserable; I was
almost unable to walk. Physicians pronoun
ced my case fa 1 ling ofthe womb, extensive ul

pains,irritation, prostration, and the intolerable
fmlid discharge, rendered life a burden. In
this miserable condition. Dr. F. P. Newland re

with what success we would respectfully submit to
the public decision. It has been unfortunate for

OF A GUN.”—-A. Curiosity of
Literature.—Kariy in the 15th century
the Scotch and Irish had a skirmish in the
North of Ireland at. Armagh near winch
town Swift once wrote the-following lines
in the window of an inn :
High church
T^nv steeple,
Dirty .own
Proud people/’
After the fray was over some one in the
Scotch army gave his opinion of Armagh
in Latin verse of which the following is a
free translation :
“So far from the town of Armagh being witty.
’Tis an extiemely cOekedJip and ridiculous
ci'y;
Man, woman and lad
Their manners are had—
The ladies I wish were a little more prude.
For, I blush to narrate they are awfully nude
If you dine with a gent y our meat’s underdone
And your host some poor pauperiy son of s
gun.”
Armah is famous in Irish history as
the most ancient seat of literature in the
three Kingdoms. The name a Gaelic com
pound signifies'“high ground” or high hill
The town is now the center of one of the
finest and most prosperous districts in Ire
land. Dean Swift’s designation of the
people is still in §ome measure true. We
recently observed in an Irish paper that
the Book of Armagh has -been sold at a
price of over§1,600.” Valuabebook that!
