My life is like tbe blighted oak,
That lifts its stared and withered form,
Se-thvd by the lightning's sudden stroke,
Sternly to meet the coining storm.
Yet roun-1 that sapless trunk ent wine
The curling tundras of the vine.
And life an I freshness there impart—
Not to the passion-blighted heart.
My life is like a desert rook,
In the mid-ocean i-me and drear;
Worn by the wild waves’ ceaseles shock,
That round its base tluir surges rear;
Yet there the sea, moss still will cling—
Some flower will find a cleft to spring,
And breathe, e’en there, a sweet perfume;
For i.e, life’s flowers n > more will bloom.

GETTING IN AT NIGHT.
‘The floor was looked when I got
home,’ said T om, ‘and how to get in
without waking up the Governor, was
the difficulty. 1 knew he’d give me
particular fits if be knew I was out a£
ter 10, and the clock had just struck
one.- The back yard was an impossi
bility and but one chance remained.
There was a porch over the frontdoor,
the roof of winch was but a few feet
below two windows. One of them I
knew was fastened down, and tne oth
er opened from a bed-room, which
might or might not be occupied. An
old maiden sister of Tint’s
key was too frightened and too sound
asleep'at the time to understand tiie
trutii, and tiie upshot of the business
was that they concluded she had been
dreaming, and the governor, alter giv
ing her a sound spanking, and explain
ing the matter to tiie aroused neigh
bors, from tiie window, went down to
ids room again.
“So far, so good. I now had io go
down stairs, reach tiie back door, un
bar it, get into the yard, make for my
room, which was in the second story of
a back building that stood unconnect
ed with, and about a dozen yards Irom
the main one. Alter giving every
body .another hall hour to’settle down
again, I started. Boys, did \ou ever
try tp go up or down a pair of stairs at
midnight, without making a noise?—
You may try alt sorts ol ways, but ev-
ry step is sure to creak, each ith a
peculiar noise of its own, and loud
-.nough, you are certain to waken eve
ry body. I had gotten u irly to the
bottom, when a liltl fiste dog came
trotting up, the entry towards me, yell
ing furiously: A suppressed ‘Come
here, sir, you Zip,’ silenced him, for he
recognized me; but the fiste started the
mocking bird, and the dogs in the
neighborhood having learned to take
the cue, of course all joined chorus for
the third time.
“ I ran along the passage, reached
the door, -end unlocked.it, just as tiie
governor roused the second time, open
ed his door aud seeing a man escaping
Irom the house by the back way.
of course cried “Thieves!” - “Thieves!’
—made a rush after me. I was ^ too
quick for him though* opened the door,
prang out, broke for the door tliat
quiet.
