was true, and that his only crime was
keeping. bad company, leaving bis
home and unknowingly .. receiving
stolen goods. Questioned separately,
they all told the same story, and. left
yto doubt in iny mind.of the boy’s in
nocence. .Full of compassion lor the
hftle fellow, I sat down and wrote a
full description of Arthur, bis condi
tion and history as I obtained it from
him—painting the horrors of the place,
the hopelessness, of. being reformed
there, even if guilty, and tire proba
bility of his never living', out his sen
tence, and describing the process £o be
used to gain his*pardon.. This I sent
according to the directions in the ad
vertisement. But weclj after week
passed and ho. answer came. The boy
daily inquired if I had heard from his
mother, until.at last “hope long defer
red seemed to make his heart .sick,”
and again -he drooped and .pined. At
