The carriage had disap peared. but the Bishop made an in stinctive movement as though anx ious to escape from further pil lage/ . ., “Wait awhile, or may be I shall get angry with you. Hand over your watch and sales and then jou may trudge.’ . Now it happeued that the Divine felt a particular regard for his watch —not so much from its being of considerable value, but because it had been presented to him by his first patron, and he ventured to expostulate. “Surely you have taken enough; leavp my watch, aud I’ll forgive all you Have done.’ “Who ax’d your forgiveness, you old varmint? . W ould you trifle with my goodnature? Don t force me to do anything I’d be sorry for, but without any more bother, just give me your watch, or, by alithats holy”— And he jerked the bludgeon from his right hand to his left, spat on the homey palm of the former, and regrasped the formidable wea pon as though seriously bent on bringing it into operation; this ac tion was not unheeded by his vic tim—he drew forth the golden time piece, and with a heavy sigh han ded it to his spoiler, who rolling the -chain and seals around it, found some wider aperture in hi3 apparel into which he crammed it; and giv ing himself a shake to ascertain that it had found, by its own gravity, a place ot safety, he said “And now be off with yoii, and thank the blessed saints that yen leave me without a scratch on your skin, or the value of your little fin ger hurt we may catch, if you persist in wearing it?” “Take it off, dear papa,” observ ed the daughter, “but do’nt throw it away; it may lead to the detec tion of the wretch who robbed you.” The obnoxious garment was re moved; the young lady wr a about to place it under the seat, when she heard a jingling noise that at tracted her attention; and on ex amination, found in various parts of the coat, not only the watch, pocketbook, purse, and silver, of which her father had been depriv ed, but a yellow canvass bag, such as is used by larmers, containing about thirty guineas. Mysteries of the Air. Beta man roll a little air ^ n J}' 3 mouth, and what is that? Let Na poleon twist it between his lips, and all the world is at war; give it to Fenelon, and he shall so manage it with his tongue that there shall be everywhere peace. It is but a lit tle agitated air that sets' mankind, in motion. If we could live, with out air, we could not talk, sing, or hear any sounds without it. d here- would be a blazing sun in a black sky—sunshine mingled with thick darkness; and there would be eve rywhere an awful silence. There is less air in the u iper than in the lower regions of the atmosphere, the bottom crust of air is, of course, densest. Sausure fired a pistol on the summit of Mount Blanc, and the report was like the snapping of a stick. There, is a well at r ulda three hundred palms deep ; throw a stone down ir, and the noise it makes in its descent will be like the firing of a park of cannon. Those circles may be checked and beaten oack m their course, as it is with the waves ot sound made by the stone tumbling down a well, beaten back and fu riously multiplied. At the castle of Simonetti, near Milan, one low note of music will beget a concer , for the note is echoed to and fro by the great wings of the building that reflect and multiply a sound est as two mirrors reflect and multiply A lighted candle.
