To the Public.
The undersigned have become the proprie
tors of the Central Georgian. As we have
some acquaintance with the readers of this
journal, we deem it unnecessary to make any
promises, further than to say, that so soon as
we receive a supply of pi in ting paper we will
publish a full sheet, and that we shall print a
good conhtrynewspaper, because if is our in
terest to do so. If we do not, we expect to
’■hare the fate of all other dealers in sorry
goods. The paper will speak for itself, when
wo get fairly under way, therefore tedious enu
meration of what we intend to do would be out
of plaes.
The Georgian will be “Independent -in all
things—neutral in nothing.”
The subscription list from January 1, 1866,
and all advertisements in the paper on the 1st
Jannary, 1866, or Inserted since that time, are
the property of the present proprietors.
B. T. CASTELLAW,
JOHN N. GILMORE.
Valedictory.
Having disposed of the types, presses, and
gopd will of the Central Georgian to Messrs.
Castellaw & Gilmore, my connection with
journal ceases from this day.
fFor nearly ten yeafglfaare I been connected
with the Georgian cither as publisher and part
>iproprietor, or a3 editor and proprietor. The
heart naturally grows sad at bidding adieu to
.those who have so long sustained me by their
patronage^nd encouraged me ib’tny labors by
•their oft-repeated approbation.
To the people of Washington county I feel
mnder lasting.obligations for the very liberal
■patronage bestowed upon me since I have been
-.attempting to publish a newspaper in their
c.midet. I came among you, fellow citizens, “a
stranger, and ye teak me in,” and have upheld
*ie in my weakness, and sustained me when,
by experience, I had acquired-more strength.
Many of the four hundred patrons tb^t I have
-'.had among you I number among my personal
- friends, and bopo ever to regard as such. To
r the ladies of the conaty I owe a lasting debt of
--^gratitude, which can never be cancelled. Yea,
will not confine it to Washington county
alone. To woman (as once before remarked
in another article) am I indebted for every -torious-facl that the pkee to get bargains is
thing. Her influence, her smiles, her counsel,
has bean the polar star thfft "has led me on in
boyhood’s uncertain ways and manhood's ma
turer years. Ac I now cnll over old dingy
papers and private drawers, preparatory to
^■resigning them into other hands,- the eye fails
-upon a neat little envelope, containing an en
couraging note from some noble woman,
-whom, perhaps, we have never seen, but
-Wboae generous heart goes out in sweet and
soothing words, bidding us God speed in our
Heebie efforts. But I do not propose to weary
4he reader in this my last (for the present, at
least) attempt at editorial.
To tlje people of Emanuel county I am also
trader many obligations. You have ever been
most kind and liberal toward me. Your gen
erosity and hospitality I shall not aeon forget.
Yon have not only given me your names as
subscribers, but also your eoualy printing, and
all other work in your power. - ,
Tq the people of Johnson county I repeat
what I have said of Emanuel. Hancock, JeU
ferSOn, ‘Burke, Baldwiu, and Warren, and
bthfir counties, have also done well by me, and
. have my grateful thanks. But I should weary
-fhc reader were I to attempt to particularize
all to whom the heart feels grateful. Through
Abe dark hours of the late revolutiou, the
Georgian was well sustained by the noble
hearted men aud women who were its patrons.
T can but invoke for my successors the same
liberal spirit that has ever been extended to
ward me.
My editorial life has been a checkered one.
j^.With a trembling, inexperienced band I em-
barked on the tempestuous sea, feeling inade
quate to the task before me. And now in
retrospecthig the past, I see many, very many
things to regret. If in an unguarded moment
I have given offence, or wonnded the feelings.
.pf-apy, I crave the forgiveness of the injured
payty, and ask for “ that charity which is the
bond of peace and the perfection of every
virtue.”
To my brethren of the press I return my
thanks for, their kindness toward me, and for
the liberality which they hare extended to the
Georgian. Particularly do I feel under obli-
gations to several of the daily papers, and
-souae of the weeklies, for sending me a full
exchange, when, by the ravages of the Federal
•prmy,.! was utterly unable to return the com
pliment. The kindness of the Daily Constitu
tionalist I shall ever hold in remembrance.
Also tbe Federal Union and Southern iJseor-
der.
But now comes, to me, the saddest part ot
all—to say farewell- This chair, this table,
♦his office, that has so long been my home, I
spow resign to another. It is hard to part with
you, my old companions and friends.
Invoking the blessing ot divine Providence
upon you all,-my late patrons, and hoping ever
to sharp your favor and esteem, I bid vou
adieu. J. M. G. MEDLOCK.
Another Swindle.—A. S. Mercer, the-emi
grant agent for Washington Territory, who
obtained a steamer from the United States
government fer the ipurpe^e of shipping eight
hundred New England damsels to that isolated
country to hunt husbands, has turned out to
be a most accomplished rascal. He swindled
a widow out of $600 in New York. Several
other females were also his, victims, the ship
having sailed clandestinely, leaving many of
the husband hunters behind, minus their pass
age money, wtiicii_they had paid in advance*
New England is a great country, or it couldn’t
get up an expedition of eight hundred maidens
to sail 12,000 miles after the poor wifeless
adventurers oa the far off Pacific'; nor could
it produce such a brute as Butler, or such a
soulless fanatic as Sumner. Old Puritan,
which is-but another ng.me for the devil, reign-
eth there still.
