New York Times and Georgia Senators.
The New York Times don’t like the election
•of Messrs. Stephens and Johnson as United
States Senators. It don’t like the idea of that
“staunch patriot’’—-as it charaeterizes'Joshua
Hill —receiving only 3S votes on the first bal
lot, -while A. II. Stephens received 152. And
finally, the Tinres not at all pleased with .he
election of two gentlemen who have “ made
themselves obnoxiously prominent in connec
tion with the rebellion,” over cx-Provisional
Governor Jas. Johnson, whose official course,
it says, “'has been emphatically approved by
the President, and especially in preference to
Joshua Hill, whose uncompromising hostility,
to the late Confederacy would have been the
best certificate he could have taken to "Wash
ington of his fitness for the post of Senator.”
Ex-Gov. James Johnson has been con
demned by the press of Georgia for lack of
-sympathy with the people of the Soqth in their
-distressed condition. While he carried out
the orders 'of the President, he seemed to be
callous to their sufferings and indifferent to
their fate.
Joshua Hill has, avowedly, been an enemy
to the Confederacy since the commencement
of the war ; and though his private acts since
the surrender have proven him to be a kind-
hearted, generous, hcaaane man, his public
course, a3 a Georgias, is hismilki-ting in the
extreme. Iu a speech to the members of the
Legislature on the night before the Senatorial
election, he cajoled, entreated and supplicated
for votes in a most pitiable manner, basing his
•fitness for the office upon the grounds that he
had never participated in any public meeting
during the war, nor voted for any public offi-
-cers of the Confederacy ; that he had been,
generally, hostile to the Confederacy, and
couM therefore conscientiously take the test
oath, which, “he was sorry to say, he found
so few who could take.” (Mr. Hill here omit
ted to say that he was a candidate for Gover
nor of Georgia in 18GS.) He closed his speech
