p-iioplo Georgians know so little of the unpre-
cedei ted Messing; b s'.owed by theGreatBene
factor, upon their beloved State. Truly grati-
fi d are we to know that a general effort ;snow
being made to uncover the "hid treasures,' 1 so
to speak, that surround us. Men have died
h prey to hunger, thirst, cold ar.d heat, or by
the ; rj bless savage^rseeking wealth upon for
eign soil, little dreaming that treasures richer
far, were to be f.und in heir own native clime.
Let us take a g'ance at some of these—and
■volu 'ties might be written and the story remain
half untold.
Extending out from our sea-coast wo find a
Boil and climate adapted to the growth of long
staple cotton, rice and sugar-cane, io-great
perfection, and abounding' with delicious
fruits known generally in the tropics. Here too
we find live-oak, pine and other timbers in
the greatest abundance and of very superior
quality. In fact the yellow pine of Georgia is
perhaps unexcelled either-in quality or quan-
^ . . ■ «
Advancing still further into tpe interior, the
soil becomes more productive, and as we pass
the long grass region, where graze herds of
i f , \, .fl ( Yi.dypg.beef for the million and where
the »ool crop of Georgia is produced, we enter
♦i... "blauk belt,” where the fleecy “King 1

k: h and plains, even now when shorn of ha f

asi c lii worthy of the artists.finest touch. But
not alone upon the-great staple are these de
pendant. ilere grow in rich luxuriance the
corn, the wine and fruits of the richest flavor.
But not to dwell, we advance still further
ir.to the “iiiil country,” and find the soil pro
ducing the corn, the wheat, the rye, every
species of grain-i—in the greatest abundance.
' Ascending the mountains, we find them filled
with mineral treasures of surpassing richness.
Here lie embedded side by side,'iron ore of va
rious kinds and superior value, and inexbaust-
able mines of coal. The quantity of iron ore
in the Stater of Georgia is said to be five times
greater than that of Pennsylvania, whose
wealth is greatly produced by her iron interests-
In Georgia wc find the iron icovSred and sur
rounded by magnificent forests to be converted
into clmr-coal, while those of Pennsylvania
are in the midst of sterile soil rendering this
essential article for the manufacture of first
class iron, difficult to obtain. We are told,
also, that the pig iron of Georgia commands a
higher price in a Northern market than that o.
Pennsylvania.
- But our mountains yield not iron alone.
In great abundance are found copperas ore,
alum ore, gold, slate, plumbago, variegated
shale, coal of all .varieties, whetstone, oilstone,
marble, ai d many Other
purposes perhaps inferior to ' m-ns upon the
continent.
These mountains, too, are surrounded by v&l-
leysof great fertility, and abound in pure li tai'.h-
givirig water. Having recently visited that
portion of the State, we testify to what we have

We fee! constrained to say a word in
justice to the Commission Merchants of Au-
ousta. Last season they Eold cottonjfor 1} per

pav the city tax, ch irge no thin it for weighing
or rc-vveighing, insure only when instructed
so to do, except the amount advanced, and
c! arge 2J per cent, for their services. It docs
seem to us that they work very reasonable.
.We arc too prone to forget the hand that
helped us to walk when, in our own strength,
we can go alone. But cr the aid extended by
Merchants, both local and Commission, how
many of us could have made a crop at all?—
We defend no one, but speak for the right.
Gin House Burned.—Tho gin house on
the premises of Mrs. Lewis Bui aid, was de
stroyed by fired on Wednesday last. Some
three bales of cotton was also destroyed. The
gin was in operation at the time, and feeder
thinks It was caused by a fricti- n nia'ch hav
ing been dropped in the seed cotton (thinks
he saw the match as it passed in,) which ignitr
ed and speedily enveloped the house in flames.
The house was an excellent one, and all new.

Messrs’. Warren, Lane, & Co, Augusta^
have somewhat to say to planters, in another
column. It was oar privilege to spend a
pleasant hour in their countingroom iast week.
They are fully prepared to aid planters in dis
posing of their crop, &c. Col- Lane, ot linn
cock, one efthe firm, is so well and favorably
known to the people of Middle Georgia, that |
commendation from us is unnecessary. His as- j
sneiates, Messrs. Warren and Wallace, are j
gentlemen of fine business attainments, and
equally worthy of pub'ic confidence.
Messrs. Beall, Spears & Go., Auguda, have
favored us with a card, to which vvetake pleas
ure in calling attention. The house is per
haps second to none .in Augusta. Planters
will find them trust-worthy, aecomnfcduting
and attentive to business. .
Messrs. Isaac T. Heard & Co., Augusta, are
still serving planters and others with thatfaith-
fulness which has so long characterized them.
Mr Heard 1 as, we understand, bten in the
cotton commission business Some thirty years
or more. Ho seems to have lost none ot bis
energy but rather to increase in zeal, for the
cause of his customer. We wish the boua-
abundant success.
We take pleasure in commending to planters
the commission house of Riberts, Morris &
Shivers, Augusta. They seem to mako p'ar.-

of those whoso business they have in hand.—
Give them a call.
Incexdiaryism.—The work shop of Mr. W

slight loss. We ur.c’erstai d strong suspicion
