Andrew Jackson on the Abuse of
Power.
A correspondent sends to u- for pub
lication the following extract from the
Farewell Address of President Jack-
son; and he askes candid readers to
consider it thoughtfully in connection
Villi the great abuse ■ f power, now so
bold and unscrupulous, of the Radical
party :
[ExLrucL from President Jackson’s Fare-
well Address.]
‘It is well known that there have al
"ays been those among us who wish
lo enlarge the powers of the general
government.; and' experience would
seem to indicate that there is a tenden
cv, on the part of ibis government, to
overstep the boundaries marked out
font by the constitution. The legiti
mate authority is abundantly sufficient
for all the purposes for which it is crea
ted ; and its powers being expressly
enumerated, there can be uo ju.-t:fioa-
tion forclaimmg anything beyoiui them.
Every attempt'to exercise power be
yond these limits should he promptly
and firmly exposed. For one evil ex
ample will lead to other measures still
mischievous; and if the principal of
constructive power, or supposed advan
tages, or temporary circumstances, shall
ever be permited to justify the assump
bon of a power not given by the con
stitution, the general government will
before long absorb all tne powers of
legislation, and you will have in t ffect
but one consolidated government.
From the extent of our country, its
diversified interest, different" pursuits
and different habits, it is too obvious
lor argument that ^single consolidated
government wouldj be wholly inade
quate to watch over anfl protect its in
terest; and every friend, of our free
institutions should be always prepared
fomaintaiii unitnpared, and in full vigor,
fbe rights and sovereignty of the States,
and tu confine the action of the genera'
goverment strictly to the sphere of its
appropriate duties.’—Savannah Repub

A. Bradley.
The Hon. Aaron A:peoria Bradley
,ts rqmecibered heie. The following ac
count of nis expulsion from cars of the
(jeoi;gia State road will be read with
.interest by our readers. We take it
word for word as it appeared in ibeChat-
tanooga Daily Times of Sturuay l^st.
‘One of the most horrible outrages
tha* ever called for tEe reconstruction
of a rebellious State was perpetrated : n
'he Union pass-nger depot of this citv,
last night.
The flon,* Aaron Alpeoria Bradley,
Senator from Africa in the Georgia L g
isiaturv, has recently been on a pilgrim
age to Washington in search of salva
tion for ihe loyal men of Georgia, whom
He is which. II is labors are now near
ly at an end. and although not as suc
cessful as they might have been, he had
reason lo congratulate himself upon the
partial reconstruction of the State.
With such pleasing food for reflection,
he purchased aticketat Washington for
Ailan;a 3 and h9-a1.en.ed to return to the
t osoin of his constituents who were as
inconsolable at his long abgetyce as R icli
el mnu.ru mg f>r her children.
The lojiig journey through the Joys!
regions of yirginin and Tennessee was
marked by no incident calculated to
mar the serenity of ilia feelings, and
wheu he flighted frouj the train in the
depot at jjhattanooga lagt night, his
lieait, thrilled with jov a.t the (prospect
of the hearty greeting he was soon to
receive from the loyal constituency he
had been instrumental in saving from
rebel rule.
With carpel-bag in one hand and his
pass in the other he presented himself
at the door of the ladies ear of the Wes-
'em and Atlantic railroad train, and
Rice—

demanded admission with the air of
authority that becomes a loval Senator,
in addressing an employe of that loyal
iusotution. It was then that the Fif
teenth Amendment received a blow in
the person of one of iis chief repregen -
ianves, which may have already shaken
me very fo-udatton of the State.
Aaron Alpeoria was deified admis
sion !
TnejGeorgi.i Sena qr was not pc-rrrjitted
to ride in the ladies’ car ol the State
mad, and when he attempted to enter
lie was gently bpt earnestly pushed
agide.
Filled vyith wrath and indignation,
he hastened into the open air, where lie
mioht.give free vent to his eimjtigns.
‘Tne dirty scalawags !’ he said. ,To
think they should treat me so, after all
my labor in their behalf!’
And thus he continued at some length
until the thought occurred to him to try
it again. But when he again entered
tliedepot, behold the train was gone.
We prefer not to attempt to imagine,
much less to describe, the wrath that
provoked his loyal soul as this astonish
uig fact burst upon him in all its ap
palling magnitude. ‘L It!’ he gasped.
‘Well, it will tie the dearest leave they
ever made. The dirty scalawags! I
could have borne this from a rebel, but
from men who pretend to be loyal, it is Coffee, Rio
110 much.’
Here some one asked, ‘Who was it,
Senator, the conductor or the train
hands?’ ‘All of them all of them,’ he
wildly replied; ‘and they are sustained
in it at headquarters; yes by Bull >cx
and Blodgett! They’ll deny it, of course,
nui they he. But I'll fix tnem. I’ I
tehgrapu to Washington, and we shali
ee ff I am io be treated in this way. Is
there a n 1 graph office here?’
A s\ mp t 'die African inf-ruled him
that there was, and ltd the enraged Sen
tor in search of |t, and he vanished
from the sight of our informant, still
uttering those ominous words, ‘The
dirty scalawags! I’d fix’em!’
We sincerely trust that this occur
rence may not be made a:i argument for
the reconstruction of Tennessee.
That it will be fraught with conse r
q uences of vast imporLir.ee to thp peo
ple of Georgia, we cannot doubt. In
tne'first place the S ate road will have
to be reorganized eo as to protect the
rights of loyal men. The Executive,
of course, will have to be changed, and
what a rebuke it would be to the dis
loyal population of Georgia if Anhui
Aipe<»ria was made military Governor
of ihe territory.
We hope nothing so bat] as this is i n
store for our friends in lieor^ia, be t they
should learn not to trifle with such keen
edged tools as the distinguished Sena
tor iVptn Africa.
There is still a bare possibility that
they may be happy yet. We were in
formed last night that Bullock and
Blodgett would arrive this morning,
and perhaps, the happy family may be
come reconciled to each other again.
In that event the offending conductor,
or brakeman will suffer instead of the
peo iile ol Georgia.’—Savannah Repub-

The citizens and cad.els worked

of our citizens. Finally, it broke oui

Tiiis loss falls heavily on General
