“Barrett’s” Elegant Hair Restorative.
^’hc weather has been hot enough to
hake eggs in the sun shine, and we ob-
gerve in our gardens cucumbers, toma
toes, cantelopes and cabbages scalded
by the sun. We have had seasonable
rains in town, while destructive floods
have fallen in some sections around us.
A continuance of this weather for two
weeks, will insure a good yield of corn

The Premium List
Of the First Grand Annual Fair,
'tSTO, of the Cotton States Mechanics
and Agricultural Fair Association of
Augusta, Ga., is before us. We have ex
amined it with considerable interest, for
we have always been partial to Augus
ta. When a young man near forty
years ago when there were no Railroads,
and Savannah was so remote that a
man up here always made his will be
fore leaving home to go there, Augus
ta, was The City—only a days ride
from Louisville, in those days a trip to
Augusta was exciting. We can well
remember, the exhileration of spirits
we enjoyed in those days—alas, that
they, with the keen enjoyment of the
novel and the beautiful are gone !
But to the Fair. It will commence
Tuesday October 25th and continue
five days. Everybody is invited and
all the Railroads except the Central
and its Branches have agreed to carry
visitors and articles for exhibition at
half price—(we are certain that the
Central will not be less liberal than the
Others.)
The officers of all Mechanical, Ag-
fipultural, or Horticultural Associa
tions, and all members of the Press are
specially invited.
An attractive premium list amount-
ijg to eleven thousand dollars, gives
ffllenoe that the Association is in car-
pest, and that its members are liberal.
Glancing over the synopsis of De
partments and Classes, we find that
04r highly esteemed brother of the
Chronicle & Sentinel superintends the
'‘BraaJ ami Batter,” Preserves ami
Honey department.” Ov,v cotempora
ry is a lucky man, and we shall certain
ly try to find his department if we vis
it the Fair. We sincerely hope that
the first annual Exhibition at Augusta,
bbtf fe? a fl that its friends desire—ali
fltat then- energy and liberality deserve.
As the Fair is «pen to «H comers,
Washington county should be represen
ted, apd dfti\btless \yill be by thp intel

Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte
Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte, the son
of Jerome Bonaparte and Miss Eliza
beth Patterson, died in Baltimore yes
terday, aged sixty five years. With
the romantic story of the marriage of
his parents, the refusal of the Emperor
to recognize the alliance and the refu
sal of the Pope to grant a divorce, our
readers are familiar. It is also well
known that Jerome subsequently be
came King of Westphalia, and in 1807
married Frederica Catherine, daughter
of the King of Wirtemberg, by whom
he had the present Prince Napoleon.
The subject of this sketch was born in
England, in 1805, while his mother
was there awaiting the result of the
Emperor’s decision regarding his mar
riage. In loll she returned to her
father’s home in Baltimore, bringing
the boy with her. He was educated at
Harvard University, where he gradu
ated in 1826. Soon after he married
Miss Susan Mary Williams, ofRoxbu-
ry, Mass., a lady of large fortune, whose
wealth, added to his own, made him
one of the richest men in Baltimore. It
is interesting to note that his mother-
iD-law, Mrs. Wi liain?, died iuthesaine
house yesterday, two hours after the
bieai.li left his body.
Mr. Bonaparte resided for some
vears in Buris during the reign of Louis
Phillippe, under the name of Patter
son. After the asceus on of Napalcon
Ilf, his eldest son, Jerome Napoleon, a
graduate of West Point, entered the
French army, of which he is now a
colonel and also aid de camp of the
Emperor. Ill's grandmother, now 90
years of age, still lives in Baltimore in
the full possession of all her faculties.
The old lady is confident that the col
onel will succeed Louis Napoleon as
Emperor of France. It is a noteworthy
fact that the deceased subject of this
sketch was more like the great Napo
leon than any other of the family. The
resemblance between him and the Em-
poror’s portraits was so striking as to
attract attention, wherever he went,
and particularly while in Paris. Being
a gentleman of wealth Mr. Bonaparte
had no regular business, although he
studied law when a young man. He,
however, engaged to some extent in
agricultural pursuit*. In Baltimore 1 e
was influential with the citizens and
highly respected by all who knew him
personally.
The new bridge of the Macon and
Augusta railroad, which spans the
Ocmulgee river, one mile below Ma
con, is now about completed.

Tub Indians—Try the Proposi
tion of Red Cloud.—Would it not
really be a good plan to try the expe
riment of sending honest men to deal
with the Indians? We have tried
nearly everything else, .ran strych-
uine to the palaver of the Quakers,
and nothing gives us a satisfactory re
sult. In the recent Indian speeches
the burden of the cry is that they
have been cheated, right and left, ou
all occasions, and in every way. Now
as the nation certainly has a disposition
to exhaust fair means, why not try the
proposition o.f Bed Cloud and deal
with the red T-ati through honest
agents? At least mafc.£ it certain that
the Indian hostility is no.t btcause of
his discontent oyer dishonest practices.
