The Cotton Crop—The Boll

Mr. -T. F. Smith brought to this of
fice last week, a handful of squares or
forms of cotton which were pretty thor

we have little skill in Entomology we
shall not attempt a description of the

J/r. S. says they have invaded a field
upon which he last year made 10 bales
of cotton, and from which though much
more highly manured, he does not be

all kinds in this county, are looking

Physical Decay.—It is not at all surprising
that the aged human frame should wear out

ni.rht with ut ceasing over four thousand times
mi hour, over ninely six thousand times a day,
f,r fifty, sixty, or seventy years—a stomach
for the same length of time digesting its con
torts, a liver laboratingits bile, etc., should re
quire assistance and support.
’ We must expect functional derangement,
feebleness, long slpepless nights, mental weak
ness. Ac., in other words, physical decay. This

Pursuit of Science Under Diffi
culties.—Professor Roessel sent out
by the Department of the Interior, to
examine into the mineral wealth of
Texas, lately arrived at Waco from the
frontier. He and his escort were sur
prised by Indians near the mouth of
the Little Wichita May 81. Two c't -
zensof Collin county, in the employ of
the proftssor, were killed and scalped,
and he was so bespattered with their
blood as to enable him to feign death.
The Exanrner, which gives us these
facts, adds:
Although punched and pricked by
the Indians with sticks and arrow's
while lying immoveable in the bottom
of the wagon, the professor still kept
still, and by so doing saved bis scalp.
The escort at this moment came rapidly
to the rescue and drove them off', 01 e
soldier b ing billed in the action.
The Indians rallied a second time, but
were again driven off', and fmallv dis
appeared in a northwesterly direction.
Their number was estimated to be for
ty or fifty, and all were armed with ri
fles, bows and arrows, decorated in a
ve y hideous manner.
Toe professor has secured a large col
lection of species of ore and fossils, and
regards the copper found extremely
valuable a;.d"easily worked.
CARD.
Office State Agriccltureal Society, )
Atlanta, July 11, 1870. j
1. Notice is given that the office of the State
Agricultural Society has been removed to most
ample and suitable halls, with office attached,
in the basement of the Capitol- J1 embers of
the Society, and visitors to the city especially,
and our citizens generally, are invited at any
and ail business hours to visit the library and
reading room and museum.
2. The thanks of officers and members of
the Society are due John It. Dukes, Esq.,
President of the AVando Manufacturing and
Mining Company, who, through Col. B. C.
Presley, of the law firm of Presley, Lord &
Jngo shy presen's specimens of fossil boms
and teeth touud'in their phosphate mines—
containing the sections of the vertebral of ex
tinct Sauri which were over thirty feet in length:
the tusks of the Sea Elephant; (Megalo Sau-
rius ) ; sharks teeth four times the size of any
living variety. Some of these specimens are
impregnated wiih iron. £
3. The following letter is. upon a subject of
such general interest as to justify publication.
It was filed in this office hy Judge Ezzard :
Lawrexcevili.e, June 29, 1870.
Hon. Win. Ezzard, Mayor:
Dear Sir—President Orr informed me last
week that fie had a letter from Col. Lewis, in
quiring whether he knew of any cnsiderable
quantity of pyrites on or near the line ot any
railroad in Georgia. Col. L. says our manu
facturers of fertilizers wish to prepare _ their
own sulphur if they can procure the pyrites.
Both copper and iron pyrites exist in any
desirable quantities in the gold veins within
one am’ a half miles of Sugar Ilill, and South
of that place on the Air-Line Railroad. I
suppose many tons of the finest variety could
be picked up among the rubbish on the top of
the uiound. It forms a large propotion of the
ground which protects the veins of the gold
leavingqiiartz mi eitherside. If the company,
to which Col. L. alludes, will establish a depot
at Sugar Hill, Ga., they will have no occasion
to send abroad fur sulphur. I do not know
where Col. Lewis is at present, and therefore
communicate this information to you that you
may let all parties cone rned know the fact.
I am truly yours,
Jas. P. Simmoxs.
4. An appeal is made to the liberality of the
Press of the State to send their papers regu
larly to this office without charge. The object
of the request is manifold. This office has and
will have thousands of of documents and cir
culars, etc., to issue. With Jresh issues daily
and weekly of the Press spread out upon our
tables, we will have at one v icw the names of
perhaps twenty thousand business men in
every department of industry, to whom we caw
send our documents. Agents, the Library
and Museum attached to the officcare daily in
creasing in interest and importance. The con
tributions of he papers of the fctate will great
ly ;.dd to this interest and will make the rooms
of the Society a most attractive resort to mem
bers and visitors from a distance while in the
city. Assurance is given to all publishers and
editors who will comply with this request, that
their files shall never he taken from the Libra
ry, arid shall, after heving answered the im
mediate wants of the office, become permanent
files and preserved fur reference and for his
torical grid statistical inquiries for which they
xyill bp inore and more valuable with the lapse
qf tiuip.
5. Delegates and members, and visitors to
the convention are urged to consider if they
cannot bring with them 9 few prpeious stones
qr other valuable contributions to the museum.
If each delegate should bring with him the
most curious and mt. resting specimens wheth
er mineral, fossil, earth, plant or other object
ia natural h.story, it would present at once a
most interesting spectacle iq itseif and perhaps
the highest evidence of the great variety _ of
soil, vegetation, climate, and o,f the varied
productive capacity of the btate. Let all try.
6. Office huurs from 9 A. M. tq 4 P. M.
7. The Seretary begs the press to renew the
favor of the gratuitous publication of the cards
of this office.
