of the inosL distinguished officers in t p

It is a curious feaiur.? of the late war
that the South furnished to the North
some of lt^ ablest f.ghters. Farra iy ut

liis section.
In an art gallery in Washington a
lew weeks ago, the writer saw a very
fine naval picture, representing a sea
light, and Panagut clinging to the rig-
ging higti on the mast, ins aim motion
ing vyith his speaking trumpet, and the
'nscrijjtion panned as emanating from
liis lips, ‘Damn the torpedoes go

Ax Important Decision.—The Sa
vaunnli Republican says : The Supreme
Court of Georgia, a few days ago, an—
ue.u iv decision virtually ammlling
Jo suspensions i f the Statute uf Liui
Rations made between 18G1 and 1805.
We understand that the effect of the
decision is to bar all notes due on c r
Lrfore the olst of October, 1858; also
nil accounts due two years later The
court only recognizes a suspension of
one year made just befege the war, con-
sidei ing suspensions made during he
war as war measures, and holding them
to be void. The ordinance of the Con
vention of 1865 was held not to retract
so as to give validity to former suspen
sion?. As the statute bars notes over
due for six years, and as the suspension
of one year (I860) was held to he legal,
tlie effect of the decision is to bar re
covery on notes that had run after be-
lotning due seven years up to 31st Oc
tober, 1865.

Ei'ropean Geography.— While the
1'ut is progressing in Europe the atten
tion of every one is drawn to the geog

w many journals, and particular towns
nre often mentioned. But confusion in
Tgnnl to these is quite likely to arise
'torn the fact that the same place is of-
en mentioned under a different name,

lithography—English, German or

Lippman's Great German Bitters.—It is a
well known faci iffit the German Physicians
have always made it a study Bow to control a
disease in the most speedy manner, and it is to
this that the world is indebted for the disco
very of the happy combination that produces
these great Bitters. They act directly on the
diseased organs, and by strengthening and in
vigorating, instead of weakening and debilita
ting the patient, as ha6 been the case hereto
fore, the cure is most speedy and sure. There
