.“A Big Day’s Work,’’ by a Good
Negro.
Nothing is more common than to hear
ouv planting friends grumbling through
out the country, at the slothf'ulness of
ae negroes. While tve condemn the
slothful, it is just that we should pQM-
MEyD the diligent and thrifty. There
are some among the colored population
who deserve much credit, for their gen
eral gofttj jjelig, vior and diligence. There
is otic negro- fellow on our place, near
payisboro, who is npted for his general
good behavior and diligence, tie is al>
says polite, and is universally esteem
ed by white and black. He is an ex
traordinary hand too, and acknowledges
no superior at work. A few days ago,
flu's boy, Nathan Rogers, by name, pick
ed four hundred and forty-four pounds
pf cotton, between the rising and the set
ting of the sun. He had not the slight
est assistance, and picked his cotton free
of all trash. I his is what aye call good
work, and we do not believe that there
is a better and abler hand in Washing-
tap county than this Nathan Rogers.
The "bite men should appreciate such
Degrees, and the colored men, should be
proud of one of their number who bears
so good a reputation, both for behavior
pud work. How much better “Nathan”
must feel, with such a reputation, and
i pocket-full of money,' than Cud jo Fye
does in his new berth. I wish you to
publish that, that every one may see it,
and know that we have ‘some’ good ne-
jroes in our county.
Very respectfully yours,
R. W. H.
