Useful Recipes.
Hailing Pepper.—To allay the
burning caused by handling peppers,
sugar of lead has been recommended,
but a friend states that the application
of molasses to the affected parts, will
allay the pain at once, which is not the
case with the lead solution.
Toothache.—All who suffer from
toothache, or neuralgic affections, aris
ing from teeth in any stato of d cay,
may experience relief, iustantanecus
and permanent, by saturating a small
bit of clean cotton or wool with a
strong solution of ammonia, and apply
ing it immediately to the aflected tooth.
The pleasing contrast instantaneously
produces, in some cases, a fit of laugh
ter, although a moment before extreme
suffering and anguish prevailed.
Si- . ■'
Raised Cake" Without Eggs.—
]3ggs are scarce and expensive, and we
invent recipes which require few or
none. Stir together a coffee cupful of
light sugar anu a half cupful ol lu t r;
add a pint of warm water, half a cup
ful of yeast, and flour enough to make
as thick as ordinary fruit cake. Rise
over night. When very light, add a
little mace, cinnamon, alspice, and nut
meg, and a sup of chopped raisins. Put
in the pan, let rise until, light, and then
bake. .
’ Dried Figs.—To dry figs equal to
any that are imported, and that will
keep any number of years. Three
qualities may be made : First, figs not
quite ripe.; second, those barely ripe ;
third, those fully ripe. Put each qual
ity to themselves.< - >
First, scald in weak lye. Tin’s is to
take the roughness off the skin. It is,
however, not essential. Second, boil in
good sugar syrup ten or fifteen minutes;
take out and dry in plates and dishes
until fully dry. Then bake or steam,
to kill the fly eggs, and then pack in
tight boxes, using a little powdered
sugar. Seal up until wanted for use.
If you use a drying furnice, there will
he no fiy eggs on the figs or peaches
and they will be ready as soi n as di y
dor packing.
Plant Young Trees.
Most'persons want fruit trees two 01
three years old under the impression
that, they will obtain fruit sooner than
from ycung'ones. ' 'J his is an errone
ous idea. The best nge at which to
.plant an apple or peach tree is one
year from the bud or graft. At this
age the root is two yea's old and the
top one. They are generally tcimed
yearlings. We decidedly prefer thi-
age, even if they are not two feet high,
to i !der trei ssix fei t in height or even
higher. Why ? asks an inquirer. Be
cause you take up the yearling alines;
entirely. 'Very few of ti e roots art
broken or otherwise injured, and il
plin ed in the fail they grow nearly
as well as if they had not been remnv
ed at all. As the tree grows y!,der the
roots extend farther, and the second
year they are too long to be taken uj
without mutilation. Fully haif, and
almost all of the small working roots
.cut off, audit will take two or thre<
years for the tree to recover. By thi.
time the yearling has caught up and
generally outgrown the'older tree
In the spring of" 1868 we transplan
ted a lot of; trees, mostly two years old
We had eight small yearlings, that did
not average over a foot and a half high.
All were planted with the same care
and in the same manner. They gie
off the first season and did very well,
the small ones gaining perceptibly on
the larger ones. Last fall they were
all about the same size. Now, th
younger cues are decidedly ,he 1 erger,
and in every respect are superior trees
We have noticed the same thing repeat
edly before. There is no advantage
planting even two year old trees. You
have better trees, and fruit fully as
soon, by planting yearlings.—Planta

Wa'kring Plants in a Dry Time.
—In case of protracted drouth, it is
Affirmed that surface watering has a
tendency to draw the roots to the sur
face,'where tbegreatestamountof mois
ture is; and hence, if the watering is
neglected a single day, the roots will
become dry, and the plants wilt.
To avoid this result, take a crow
bar or a vvcod stake, sharpened, and
inake among the plants numerous hobs
in the ground, six or eight inches deep;
and into these pour the 'water from the
nozzle!’ of the watering pot, the rose
being removed. Give a heavy dose,
and half a hour afterwards go over
the ground with the hoe, stirring and
leveling the .surface, then attach the
rose and sprinkle the plants and the
ground very lightly. If this inod-o
treatment is properly applied once a
week, plantswill not suffer in any or
dinary drouth.

The St. Louis Republican says that in
Mi ssouri the whole negro question is
beginning to be tested by the cool jud
gement of calm, reflecting men. The
negro is known for what he is, and
Radical who are not in need of his
vote declare him to be unfit for polit-
cal freedom, whilst tho. e who use him
as a voting machine do not despise him
less because they make a tool of him.
At the same time that Radical faction
that uses him to carry certain candidates,
does not in.the least contcmp’ate treat
ing the. negro as an equal alter he has
boiled his vote, whilst the other Radi
cal faction, which desires to carry an
other class of candidates, openly de
nounces its former minions as a mere
mob, with no political tnsght or con
sciousness of the meaning of American
citizenship. The Democracy being out
of the fight, every cause for political
excitement was removed, and the ex
periment of amalgamating African and
American culture, in a new cement of
citizenship, can be made under the sole
guidance of cool and unbiassed reason.
Thirds a phase of the negro question,
Ifhd it is a highly important: one.
When men are prepared to look at the
Whole subject, in the light of his-tory,
reason and- common sense, then the ne*
s;ro will soon sink out of sight as a
portion ofxtbe governing power of the
country. j- ■■- i

This wonderful vegetable
restorative is the sheet-
anchor of the feeble and
debilitated. As a tonic and
cordial for the aged and
languid it has no equal
among stomachics. As a
remedy for tiie nervous
weakness to which women
are especially subject, it is
superseding every other
stimulant. In all climates,
tropical, temperate or
frigid, it acts as a specific
in every species of disorder
which undermines the
bodily strength and breaks
down the animal spirits.
Wherever it is intro
duced it becomes a stand
ard article — a medicinal
staple. It is to-day the
best and purest tonic, and
the most popular medicine
in the civilized world—be
sure and get the genuine.
