One of Forney’s Specimen Slan
ders ?—We copy the following charac
teristic paragraph from Forney’s Press
of Friday last :
Our telegraphic columns teem daily
with accounts of outrages at the South,
committed by white men upon negroes.
Every mail we receive from that un
happy section brings additional evidence
of the lawlessness so rife there, in re
ports of riots and murders, which in
telligent purveyors of news fail to trans
mit. The public must be well nigh sa
tiated with this kind of news, but it
appears to be only a fair record of life
south of the old line of demarcation
between the Free and Slave States.
It seems that the habit of lying is so
strongly fixed upon the miserable crea
ture that he can not. resist it, even when
he is without mo ive. The elections
are over, and Congress is not in session.
Then whai earthly motive can Forney
have for uttering such stuff as the aLov. ,
when he, knows, too, that hisnwn n.ao
ers “must be well nigh satiated with
kind of news,” which “intelligent pur
veyor.- fail to trrnsmit,'' and which i o
one believes.
We venture the as ertion that the
criminal records of his own Sm’e wnl
show, duii *g tiie last month, more
crimes of every grade, more ads ol
violence, titan have been cm tni ed in
any three of the Southern Slates du:-
ing the same time.—Savannah News.
