way to the country, as during the present
season. We very much fear our planting
friends are investing too largely in commer

Baldwin, one of the primes movers in the
temperance reform in that county. Mr.
Whitaker is one of our old time friends, and
his presence brings up many pleasing recol
lections of the past.

Painful Accident.—One of the most pain
ful accidents occurred at Linton, Ga., on the
17th inst. it has ever keen our duty to record.
Little Alba, infant daughter-of Mr. and Mrs.
A. J. Trawick, while playing with her little
sister, fell over the rocker of a chair, striking
her head against the floor, and died in a few
minutes. She was about fifteen mouths old.

in another column ? Well, that is just as
near a correct likeness of the boots and-shoes
George Reinhart is turning out daily as wo
could get. The only difference is, George's
boots look much better. Some of the young
men about town have been in ecstacies over
his splendid “fits”—the best; they say, they
ever had.

We have felt but little .inclination to en
gage in the usually pleasant task of getting
up local items for to-day’s issue. When
there are so many sad hearts around, it
seems liko mockery to engage in anything
liko levity or humor. With a vacancy at
home and a brother just ready to cross the
dark stream, "the task of getting up a read
able column has indeed been a hard one.

Mftgnolia Lodge of Good Templars have
changed their name to Magnolia Council,
No 7, United Friends of Temperance. It is
indeed gratifying to know.that the order is
growing in strength with every meeting, and
doing great good in the community. God
speed the glorious work.
In order to add to the attractions of their
weekly meetings, they have purchased an
Organ for their Hall.

An old planter says, in his young days, a
farmer’s joy was his big com crib, well fill
ed, his fat horse and fine porkers. Now it
is bales of cotton. His horses are kept out
of sight for very shame at their leanness,
his crib is scarcely ever foil, smokehouse
ditto. Then people had time for social en
joyment Now it is a race from -Christmas
t* Christmas, every body in debt, and still
the cry is more cotton. ■

has been plucked for 'the . Master's garden.
Little Lily (Elizabeth Grant) Twioos, aged
nearly seven years, and -daughter of Mon.
H. D. B. Twiggs, died on Monday last. She
was one of the brightest and sweetest chil
dren we have ever known. The idol of the
household, and beloved by every one with
whom she became associated. But if Lily was
so lovely while iiving, how much more so
her pure spirit. glorified in the world of
