Miss Susan Massey, daughter of the late
John 13, Massey, died a few days since.
O
Much to our regret, several communica
tions and our Juuior’s trip to the country,
are crowded out this week.
O
Mr. Alexander McCullers, we regret to
know, is dangerously ill. Fears are enter
tained that he will not recover.
0
Who does not like a cup of nice tea—the
pure nectar? Brantley & Pringle have some
of the best we ever drank, and cheap, too.
Owing to sickness, Elder W. C. Moreau
was unable to fill his appointment in this
city on Sabbath last.
O
The schedule on the Central Railroad has
again been changed. But two trains in
twenty-four hours now, both passing here at
night. See schedule.
o
Glad to see in the city on Saturday last,
Pr. William Taylor, of Wilkinson. Have not
seen the Doctor here before in a long, long
while. Time seems to deal gently with him.
O
The Sabbath School at Mineral Springs
church, in this county, will have a celebra
tion on Friday before the 2nd Sabbath in
this month.
O
The meeting at Harris’ Church, which
closed on Tuesday night, was attended with
considerable interest. Quite a number were
added to the church and, we trust, much
good accomplished.
o
Do not fail to read that grand piece of poety
on first page. It is a gem of surpassing beauty
and sublime thought, and is from the pen of
one of Georgia’s most gifted daughters.
O
B. B. Belcher, Esqr., of Bethany, Ga.,is du
ly authorized to act as our Agent in solicit
ing subscriptions to the Hekai.d.
Mr. James M. Webb, of Stark, Fla., is also
authorized to act in the same capacity.
o
The old “Saffold Guards,” of this county,
have been reorganized with Cap. D. H. Tuck
er as Captain; Robert Carr, 1st Lieutenant;
William Buck, 2d Lieutenant. We under
stand Capt. Tucker will uniform the compa
ny at his own expense.
O
A new Post Office is soon to be established
at the Club House in Bulloch county. Glad
to know that Uncle Samuel (we put the “uel”
on to please the old fellow,) is at last awaking
to his duty to this deserving, but greatly
neglected, people.
o
Rev. Mr. Sasnett, of the Gordon Circuit,
(formerly of Sparta,) preached two excellent
sermons in the Methodist church in this city
on Sabbath last. We were also glad to see
him in our office on Monday, and hope his
stay in our community was at least sufficient
ly pleasant to induce him to repeat it.
O
Our former countyman, Andrew J. Sparks,
Esq., now of Quitman, came up to see the
old home and friends, a few days since, bring
ing with him, as Mrs. Sparks, one of Quit
man’s fairest daughters. May their honey
moon neyer "change,” be always “full, and
"set” only to rise in brighter splendor on the
celestial shore.
O
The matrimonial fever has almost entirely
subsided. Some ‘symptoms’ occasionally,
but “serious” cases are rather of rare occur
rence. The probabilities are that the mala
dy will spread with the approach of winter,
as many parties are recklessly exposing them
selves to the contagion during the pic-nicing
season. ’Tis useless to utter a word of warn
ing however.
0
Pleasant Grove school, under tuition of
Capt. D. A. Green,opened(fallterm.)on Mon
day last with forty-three pupils. Capt. G. is
doing a good work, that will live when he has
passed from life’s busy scenes. So rapidly
has the school increased that the patrons are
now busy at work enlargingjjthe building, so
as to accommodate all who may desire to at
tend.
O
Mr. H. Q. Ward, one of our best mechan
ics, left for the old North Carolina home on
Wednesday night last, hoping by travel and
a visit to the scenes of his boyhood, to regain
his failing health. We most heartily wishhim
a pleasant journey and a realization of his
fondest anticipations.
During his travels Mr. Ward is authorized
to act as Agent for the Herald.
Friends who came over from Sparta last
Saturday, say that the crops along the road
show that the people of Washington county
are in cold (or hot, have forgotten which,)
earnest on the subject of improvement. So
they are, and it makes us real proud to hear
such encomiums from our noble sister, Han
cock. There is life, and much of it, in the old
county yet, as we expect to convince the
State about the ides of October.
Mr. Ellison is now supplying our market
with excellent beef three times a week. His
days are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Ellison understands his business, and no
mistake. Such nicely butchered beef we have
not seeD in market since Major Nunez went
away. Be there early, if you want a choice
"cut.” His ‘all steak’ beeves (and we had
like to have forgotten it,) have not arrived
yet; but when they do due notice will be
given. His rule is, no engagements, first
come, first served.
Litile Eddie, infant son of Mr. and Mrs.
J. E. Weddon, died on Saturday last, aged
thirteen months. This dear little babe was
one of the last victims of whooping-cough,
which prevailed so alarmingly here a few
months since. The little fellow nevey en
tirely recovered from its terrible effects un
til measles laid hold upon his little frame,
and from a fine healthy child he gradually
wasted away, until death relieved him of his
sufferings. -The bereaved mothe* and father
have our deep, heart-felt sympathy.
O
Hurrah for Bailey, the ever accommoda
ting Proprietor of the Hack Line plying be
tween this city and No. 13, C. R. R. He has
run the “Old Ship” ashore, and brought out
a splendid new Hack, fit for a Prince to ride
in. None of your blind mule arrangements,
but one of Renfroes’best, so comfortable aDd
nice. When he gets that fine span or horses
out from Kentucky.—some of Hunter's—how
nice it will be to ride to the Depot in. Again
we say, hurrah for Bailey! His heart always
was in the right place.
Handsome Premium.—On Saturday last the
Agricultural, Society of this county deter
mined to offer a premium of one hundred
and fifty dollars to the District in the coun
ty presenting the finest and best display at
the approaching Fall Fair. Said premium
to be devoted to educational purposes in the
successful District. This looks like business,
and means go to work with a determination
to win. Don’t stand idly by, with your
hands in your pockets, and the puny excla
mation on your lips, “O, you’ll beat us!”—
Of course they will, and very easily, too, if
you surrender without a struggle.
This premium is offered with the hope to
arouse a commendable rivalry in th6 county-
—a District pride—that will make these old
hilLs and valleys team with the rich harvest
of the husbandman, such as never was seen
here before. Friends all, the grand object
we have in view is improvement ! Improve
ment on our farms, in our workshops, in our
school-rooms—in every department—moral
ly, socially, and every other way calculated
to make a people wiser and better. Come,
then to the noble work, and make Washing
ton county the pride and admiration of all.
Nature has done well her part, now let us do
ours. Let there be no drones in the hive,
but all zealous co-workers in a grand and
glorious cause.
The next Fair will be held on Thursday,
Friday and Saturday, October 23rd, 24th and
25th. The Premium List will be out in a
few days, and will be very attractive.
O
The Academy.—On Saturday morning last
the Trustees held a meeting, at which the
following resolutions were adopted:
Resolved, That the subscribers to the Acad
emy building be requested to meet at the
Court-house in Sandersville, on Wednesday,
August 6th, and decide by vote where said
building shall be located.
Resolved, That parties having eligible lots
to dispose of, be requested to hand in sealed
proposals (to C. R. Pringle, President of the
Board of Trustees,) as to terms, etc., on or
before that day.
.Now if you have not subscribed and de
sire to have anything to say as to where the
building shall be located, march up to "the
Captain’s office” and make your entry. None
but those who intend to help build the
Academy will be permitted to vote. Let no
one stay away and then grumble hereafter
as to the location. The responsibility was
too great for the Trustees to assume to select
the lot, and they determined to leave it to a
vote of those who intend investing their
money in the building,—the only way it
could be done satisfactorily.
We hope and believe that a central, well
adapted and pretty lot will be selected, and
that all will cordially acquiesce in the de
cision of the majority. We want a large,
nice School-house, and such a building, with
all conveniences for both sexes, we expect to
have.
O
Good time in the Grange.—The Patrons
of Husbandry, sure enough, had a glorious
time in this city on Saturday last. There
were representatives here from the counties
of Burke, Hancock, Jefferson, Scriven and
Wilkinson, besides a large delegation from
all the Granges in this county. Such an ar
ray of husbandmen, with their noble wives
and daughters, we have never met before on
so delightful an occasion. O it was a pleas
ant and happy season. One of those sweet
rests along life’s toilsome journey, that the
mind loves to dwell upon long, long after.
Of course we can’t tell you all that was
said and done “under the Rose,” as Dr. Hol-
lifield has it, but we give a little taste of the
feast in the highly interesting address de
livered by the Doctor on that occasion, and
which will be found on our first page.
To brethren of neighboring Granges, we
say come again and come often, and Sahders-
ville Grange will ever greet you with a hear
ty welcome.
O —
We welcome to her home and friends, after-
an absence of many months, Miss Clara Da
vis, who recently returned from school in
Savannah. We notice from the Savannah
papers that Miss Clara was the recipient of
several mementoes of merit; among them the
Medal for proficiency in her studies. Truly
has Washington county cause to be proud of
her children; wlmn honors are to be won they
are sure of someofthem. Hoping that Miss
Clara’s recent successes are but the foreruner
of a successful and happy life, we again wel
come her to her home and friends.
o
Much to our regret quite an error appear
ed in our report of the premiums awarded at
the late Fair. We gave Col. T. J. Smith
much more credit than he was entitled to.—
Difficult task, don’t you think? Well, we
did it—innocently however. The Colonel
did not produce any of the fine vegetables,
articles of domestic manufacture, etc., etc.,
for which so many premiums were awarded;
but Mrs. Smith did, and there’s where the
error comes in. We were misled by the
memorandum sheets kept by the Secretary,
for his own use, and not corrected for publi
cation.
