Washington Superior Court convenes on
the second Monday in September.
Mr. Robert Williams, an old citizen of this
county, died on the 26th inst., aged 85.
o
Jso use wasting fire in cooking eggs now.—
Just lay them out in the sun for a few minutes.
O
The Washington Rifles have been playing
soldier at the Fair Ground for four days
past.
o
Mr. Sol. R. King, after many years ab
sence, has returned to bis old homo in San-
dersville.
O
Mr. Jacob Cohen has returned to Sanders-
ville and resumed business. Glad to have
him among us again.
One hundred and four pupils reported for
duty at the Sandersville High School, on
Monday last. Others are yet to come.
0
Mrs. M. G. Wood, the excellent and much
beloved wife of Mizel G. Wood, Esq., the ef
ficient Tax Receiver of this county, died on
Friday last.
0
In response to the request of many reader^
we publish the letter of ex-Gov. Johnson to
Gov. Smith. The letter will be read with in
terest bv all.
O
Mr. Ezra New, living near the Jefferson
line, killed a large Buck a few days since.
When dressed the deer weighed 109 lbs.
Would like to have been there.
O
A certain old darkey of this city, who
seems to take a special delight in abusing
his family, should be looked after, and the
“Liberty" of mistreating his wife taken from
him.
O
To Tax Collectors.—We are prepared to
furnish blank Tax Receipts, neatly printed
and conveniently bound, as low as any house
in Georgia. Please send in your orders ear-
lv so that we may serve all in good time.
O
Mr. Charles T. Baine, of Baldwin, whose
illness we announced last week, died at his
home near Milledgeville a few days since.—
Mr. Baine married an excellent lady of this
city, who has the heart-felt sympathies of our
people in this sore affliction.
o
We stated in our last that Rev. Mr. Mixon
had been called away to see his father, who
was reported dangerously ill. Before Mr. M.
arrived, however, his aged father had gone
to rest, having died a few hours previous.
He resided in Newton county.
O
Mrs. James F. Smith, an excellent lady,
and the beloved wife of James F. Smith, Esq.,
former Sheriff of this county, died on Friday
last. This is the third time the grim mes
senger has visited this household during the
present year. Two sons, nearly grown, and
now the wife and mother.
o
The first bale of new cotton this season,
was brought to this city on Monday last, and
bought by M. Newman & Son. We scarcely
need say that it was from the plantation
of Judge Green Brantley, as] the Judge
has not failed to produce the first bale for
manv years. This bale weighed 610 pounds.
Rev. J. B. Culpepper, of the Waresboro
Circuit, is on a visit to his old charge in this
countv* We were glad to see him in our of
fice on Wednesday. Providence permitting,
he will preach at Tabernacle church on Mon
day next at 11, a. m., and 7V, p. m. Also, at
New Bethel on Tuesday at 11, a. m./
O
In making arrangements for shipping your
cotton, etc., do not forget onr former coun-
tymen, W. W. Carter & Sons, Savannah.—
Their card will be found elsewhere in this
paper. They are too well known in this
part of Georgia to need any commendati on
from us.
-o —
Parties visiting Augusta will find the Cen
tral Hotel a pleasant home during their stay
in the city. We spsak from recent experi
ence, and commend the Central to all our
friends. It is located in the center of the
business portion of the city, is well kept in
every respect, and charges quite reasonable.
See card.
O
The election for Mayor and Aldermen for
this city will be held on Monday next. May
or Pringle, much to the regret of the people
generally—we believe universally—declines
re-election. He has made an efficient and
faithful officer, and all would be glad to
have him continue in a position where his
services are so much needed.
Don’t be vexed because the first and fourth
pages contains something else besides the
usual story this week. You will find Dr.
Holiifield’s Address before the Ohoopie Sun
day School well worth your reading, and
those letters are interesting. But we do not
intend to transgress upon the space allotted
to the ladies and little folks often—perhaps
never again.
-O-
Tke members and honorary members of
the Washington Rifles held a meeting in the
Court-house on Saturday last, and Major
W. M. Moses was called to the Chair, and
A. W. Robison, Esq., was requested to set
as Secretary of the meeting. A question was
made in regard to obtaining a flag for the
company, when Major Moses informed the
meeting that Mrs. Moses would present the
company with a flag. We learn also that
arrangements will be made for uniforming
the company at an early day.
The cotton crop in some sections of this
county is suffering very much from rust, or
wet weather blight, caused by the excessive
rains of the past few weeks. The catterpillars
are also damaging some of the crops, in places
where the weed is young, and leaves tender.
Some planters think their crops have been
cut off fully one third, by the rains and
worms together. The last few days of warm
snmshine is causing the bolls to open very
fast, and several planters have commenced
to pick in earnest.
We are proud to have the card of the
well known and deservedly popular house of
J. W. Lathrop & Co., Savannah, in onr col
umns. Among all our advertising patrons
—and we solvit advertisements from none
that we cannot'commend—there is not one
that we can more cheerfully recommend to
onr friends than the house of J. W. Lathrop
k Co.
The firm of Guilmartin &. Co., Savannah,
are ready as usual to serve the publio with
that faithfulness and zeal which has ever
characterized them. We need not say that
this is one of the best houses of our sea-board
city; the public are well aware of that fact.—
See card.
We 1 earn from Capt. D. H. Tucker that
he has ordered the cloth for the uniform of_
his company, the Saffohl Guards, and has
employed a competent tailor to cut the snits.
They have not yet received arms, but we
hope the Governor may soon issue guns for
the use of the “Guards.”
