/feu. 11’nn Park, Editor Sandcraville Herald-.
Dkau Hrti I seo in your issuo of to-day a
short editorial that surprises mo no little. 1
have always accorded to you that frankness
which would bo expected from ouo of your
high character as a Christian gentleman; und
I read your paper Ueoausa it iB intelligently
editod and fairly and well conducted, and,
because morever, I have known it and read it
under all its changes of name since it was
tlio “iSuiidecsui/fe Telescope," down to tlie
tlie present hour, and I always bail it as a
pleasant visitor from ray old Washington
home where I have many cherished friends,
mid about which cluster many dear and su-
ered memories. I have always herctolorc
been treated, as far as I now remember, with
frank n css aud kindness iu its
columns. Imagine my surpriso then, when
I opeuod tbe Heiiaud this evening aud found
Fie lollowiug: "Thslndopendeut Republican
party, under the leadership ot Lougstreet,
Bpcer, IIook, Thornton, and perhaps others
Ins had an accession, Mr. Albert li. Cox, of
Ligrange, etc. etc." Now, yon ought to know
that i buve never acted with tlio republican
party, und if you dont know it, 1 tell you
that from my youth up, through sunshine
nnd through storm, through prosperity and
adversity, 1 have never been uuytbing else or
other than a democrat. I never liuvo voted
in all my life any oilier ticket thau the dem
ocratic, and as I understand true democracy,
never expect to vote otherwise. But I dc not
blindly tollow all the bogus methods aud
policies which tho so-called “Organized" are
pleased to label democratic. I prefer to think
and act for mysoli, and recognize no man’s,
no editor’s, nor any cliquo’s right, to pop the
party lash over my back. I know that the
laboring, farming and planting interests ol
the country, are being subordinated fo the
interests ol the money power, by the lolly or
wickedness of leading politicians all over the
country on both sides, and I dare to say so,
despite the frow ns of tho Tilden, Bayard and
Hewett wing of my own piarty. I have nev
er aligned myself with General Longstreet
since lie went, into the republican ranks; I
have been equally careful never to malign
liis motives for so doing, but ou the contrary,
have ever esteemed him ai a gentleman, a
foil
cure for you nu impartial trial. Hut you
have had tho power of the United Elates
Treasury mid the govermout iu your service
to protect your person from violence, and to
procure evidence from all parts of tho ooun-
try. * * • * You have been (loleuil
by counsel with a zeal and devotion that
merits the highest encomiums. 1 certainly
have dune my host to secure a fair presenta
tion of your (lul'eDSO. Notwithstanding all
this yon have been found guilty. It wouli
liiive been a comfort to many people it lli
verdict ol tlie jury had established tho tael
that your act was that of an irresponsibl
man. it would have left the people tlio sat
isfying belief tlmt the crime (if political as
sassination was something entirely ioreign In
the institutions and civilization of our coun
try; but tlio result has denied them that
oomfort. The country will accept it iih a fact
that tho oriuio can be commlttod, aud lli
mart will have to dual w ith tlio highest pen
alty known to the criminal code to servo as
an example to others. Youroareer h is been
so extraordinary that tlie people might woB
at times have doubted your sanity; but o.>e
ouuuot but believo that when the crimo was
committed you thoroughly understood tho
nature of the crime and its consequences,
[Guiteau “I was eating ns GoiVh man.”]
and that you hml moral senso nnd conscience
enough to recognize tho mohd iniquity of
such an act. [The prisoner* “That’s a mat
ter of opinion."] Yonrown testimony shows
that you recoilud with horror from tho idea.
You say that you prayed ngaiust it. You
say that you thought it might bo prevented
This shows that your oonscieoeo warned
you against it; but by tho wretched sophistry
of your own mind you worked yourself up
ngaiust tlie protest of your conscience. What
live could 1.live induced you to this net
must bo a matter of conjecture. Probably
men will think that some political fanaticism
or morbid desire for self-exaltation was tlie
real inspiration for the act. Tour own testi
mony seems to controvert the theories of your
counsel. They linvo maintained honestly,
I think, that you were driven against your
will l-y an insane impute to commit tho act,
but jour own testimony showed that you di-
liberatdy resolved to do it, nnd that a delib
erate aud misguided will was tho solo im
pulse. This may seem iusnuitv to some per
sons, but tip law looks upon it as a wilful
crime, You will liave due opportunity of
having any cirors I may hnvo committed
during tho course of this' trial passed upon
by the court e,i banc, but meanwhile li is nec
