Little Rock, Oct. 2.—The death of
Colonel M. L. Bell, a prominent citizen
of Pine Bluff, last Saturday, has weak
ened the criminal prosecutions for em
bezzlement against ex-Stato Treasurer
Woodruff. Ho was the state’s most im
portant witness, and by him they in
tended to prove that he paid Woo lruff
in person the coupons of the 1 muling
bonds, which, it is charged, Woodruff
appropriated. His deposition was taken
in chancery in Juno, 1892, but is not ad
missible in a criminal prosecution.

In all our theologicalsominaries where
we make ministers there ought to he
professors to give lessons in natural his
tory. Physical scienceoughtto betuunlit
aide by side witli revelation. It is tin
same God who inspires the pago of Ihe
natural world as the page of the Scrip
tural world. What u freshening up it
would be to our sermons to press into
them even a fragment of Mediterranean
aeaweedt Wo should have fewer ser
mons awfully dry if wo imitated our
blessed Lord, and in our discourse, like
him, we would let a lily bloom, or n crow
fly, or a lien brood her chickens, or a
crystal of salt flash out tho preservative
qualities of religion.
The trouble is thut in many of our
theological seminaries men who are so
dry themselves they never could got
people to come and hear them preach
are now trying to teach young men
to preach, and the student is put between
two great presses of dogmatic theology
and squeezed until there is no life 1 r
in him. Givothe poor victim r.t leas
one lesson on the botany of the Bible.
WONDERS OF THE DEEP.
That war, an awful plunge that the r<v
reant prophet Jonah niado when,
dropped over the gunwales of tho Mod:
terranean ship, he sank many fathoms
down into a tempestuous Bea. Both be-
foio and after thp monster of tho deep
swallowed him, he was entangled in sea
weed. The jungles of the deep threw
their cordage of vegetation around him.
Some of this seaweed was anchored to
the bottom of the watery abysm, and
aotne of it was afloat and swallowed by
the great- sea monster, so that, while the
prophet was at the bottom of the deep
after he was horribly imprisoned he
could exclaim and did exclaim in the
words of my text, “The weeds were
wrapped about my head.”
Jonah was the first to record that there
are growths upon the bottom of the sen
as well as upon land. The first picture
1 ever owned was n handful of seaweeds
pressed on a page, and 1 called them
the shorn locks of Neptune,” These
products of the deep, whether brown or
green or yellow or purple or red or inter
shot of many colors, are most fascinat
ing. They are distributed all over the
depths and from Arctic to Antarctic.
That God thinks well of them I conclude
from the fuct that he lias made 6,000
apecies ot them. Sometimes these water
plants are 400 or 700 feet long, and they
cablo the aea. One specimen has a
growth of 1,600 feet.
On tho northwest shore of our country
ia a seaweed with leaves 30 or 40 feet
long, amid which tho sea otter makes
