THURSDAY MORNING. OCT. 5. 1893.

The deotion of tminiotpol officers for the
city of Saudoraville came off on yesterday.
It was one of the most quiet end one of the
most unanimous eloolione we presume ever
held here.
The unanimity which marks the vote is
a flrttetiug indication of the confidence ol
the people, in the men they have called to
the head of the city govenrment, and will
doubtless servo ns an additional incentive to
the city futhers to discharge -frith fidelity
the trusts committed to their care, —the
faithfnl execution of the laws.
Aside from a few scattering votes, the reg
ular ticket reoeivod all the votes oast. The
following is the vote of the Mayor and aider-
men eleot:

Reports oi damage by floods at Gilo,

11,025 houses were flooded, 23S people kill
ed and 30,200 rendered homeless.
Heavy raiLs in Italy have flooded the dis
tricts around Naples, Flcrenoe, Genoa, and
other cities. Several railways are under wa
ter, bridges and homes swapt away and
many persons have been drowned.
It makes no difiereneo how much money
there is in tho country, the laboring man
will not get hold of it unless he works lor it,
and it there in no work to do ho will not got
it at all.
IIo tells what he saw, Mr. Chas. J. Win-
strand, itrishin, Clearfield Co , Pn„ writes:

Governor Northen Iras published a letter
from the President on the great issue now
before Congress.
The Governor frankly stated theconditron
of Georgia farmers with cotton now ready
for market but not sufficient pronoj to move
the crop, tho farmer compelled to sell, while
tho ptice is ot necessity reduced. Tho re
sult wonld be to enrich speculators at the ex
pense of the farmer. lie believed tire condi
tion of the farming mterest would bo sub
served by a statement from tbe President,
defining tbe policy ot tbe administration on
the question of silver and Iret coinage, and
a groat stride wonld bh taken towards the
restoration ol confidence in the country and
infusing life and activity again in business
oiroleB.
TbcBO were tho considerations that
prompted tho letter of Governor Northen,
and the people will read with eager luterost
this deliverance from tho highest function
ary of tbe land.
Tbe President strikes tire key not# to the
only real objection, to fr e coinage that can
have weight with the masses, and that is the
necessity of an International agreement as
to tbe value ot the silver dollar.
Without suoli international agreement, he
does not believe our currency would he sale
and re assuring, and that those having mon
ey would hoard it, rather then spend i‘, or
invest in business enterprises. A recogniz
ed disparity would lead to hourding of gold,
and there wonld be no relict. However our
people may differ with these views, ell must
admire the manly courago with which he
avows them.

On Friday Hon. G. W. Dunham a formei
citizen of this county but now the sheriff ol
Montgomery county, had the unpleasant du
ty to perform to be tho exooutioner of five
criminals. Three cf them, Lnoien Manuel,
Hyre Browingtou and Hiram Jacobs, were
buDg for the murder of Alex Fotcrsou a mor-
chsut; Ture Strickland for the murder of Jim
Locklear, aud Weldon Gfirdon for tho mur
der of Zerilda, the 5 y ear old child of Barney
Neal.
The admirablo manner in which Sheriff
Dunham performed his duty, and protooted
the prisoners from lynching, called forth the
following letter of high commendation from
ble to any laborir or (armor in the
Stales for a shrinkage in the purchasing
power of.the dollar he has reotived for a full
dollar’s worth of work, or tor a good dollar’s
worth of tbe product of his toll. I not only
want our currency to be of such a character
that all kinds of dollars will ho of equal pur-
uhasit g power at home, hut I. want it to be
of such a character as will demonstrate a
broader wisdom and good faith, thus pl«c-
iug upon a firm foundation o‘ rurojit among
the nations of the earth.
I want our ttnaDoial condition nnd the laws
relating to our oum-ncy so safo and reassur
ing that those who have money will spend
and invest it iu business and now enterpris
es instead of hoarding it. You cannot core
fright by calling it foolish aud no reasonable,
and yon oannot prevent the frightened m»n
from hoarding his money. I wftLt R oodl
round and stable money. and a condition ol
ooofidenoo that will keep it it* ° 90 *
Within the limits ot what I bnve written,
1 am a friend ot silver, but I believe its
proper pi <oe in our currency can ouly bo
fixed by a readjustment of onr enrrenoy leg
islation and the inauguration of a consistent
and comprehensive financial scheme. I
think such a thing can only be ontered upon
profitably aud hopefully after tho repeal ot
the law, which is charged with our financial
woes. In tbs present state of the public
mind, this law cannot be bnilt upon, nor
patched in such a way as to relievo the sit
uation. I am thereforo opposod to the free
and unlimited coinago ot silver by this o.mn
uy alone and independently, and I am it
favor of the immediate nnd unconditional
repeal of the purchasing clause of the so
called Shennan law.
I oonfess that I am astouislisd by tho op
position iu the Senate to such prompt ac
ion as wonld relieve the pro ent uuforlni.ate
situation. My daily prayer is that tho delay
iccasioned by snob oppositi n uiay not be
cause of plunging the country into deeper
depression than it has yet known, and that
the Democratic parly may not be justly bt id
responsible for such a catastrophe.
