LOCATING A COUPLET.
A Familiar Quotation Ascribed to

Few popular quotations have more
enguged tho pens of critics than the fol
lowing:
Fur ho that lights and runs away
Will live to light another (lay.
These lines nro almost universally
supposed to forma part of “Hudibras,”
and so confident have oven scholars been
on the subject that in 1784 awagerwas
mado at Bootle of 20 to 1 that they
were to be found iu that inimitable
poem. Dodsley was referred to as tbe
arbiter, when ho ridiculed the idea of
consulting him on tho suhjeot, saying,
“Every fool knows they are in ‘Hudi
bras. ’ ”
George Selwyn, who was present,
said to Dodsley, “Pray, sir, will you bo
good euongh, then, to inform an old fool,
who is at tbe same time your wise
worship’s very humble servant, in what
oanto they are to be found?"
Dodsley took down tbe volume, but
ho could not find tbe passage. The next
day oarne, with no better success, and
the sage bibliophile was obliged to con
fess “that a man might be ignorant of
the author of this well known eonplet
without being absolutely a fool. ” But
ler has indeed two or three passages
somewhat similar- The one that comes
nearest is tho following, in " Hudibras, ”
book 8, canto 3, verso 243:
For thofio that fly rany fiflit again,
Which ho ouu novor do that's slain.
Tbefaot, however, is that the couplet,
thus erroneously ascribed to the author
of “Hudibras,” occurs in a small vol
