Mr. W. F. Norris, ft prosperous
alK l successful farmer living about
thive miles from Sandersville,
died suddenly after retiring for
the night of what is supposed to
l mV e been heart disease, last Sat
urday night.
If ho suffered or struggled at all
before his death it was not suffi-
cient to awaken other occupants
of the house and no one knew of
his death until several hours after
ward, when his children went to
wake him for breakfast.
Mrs. Norris left a day or two
previous to visit relat ives in War
ren county and was not at home
when Mr. Norris died.
Mr. Norris was about thirty-five
years old and apparently a man
enjoying the best of health. Just
the afternoon before his death he
was in Sandersville and many of
his friends saw and conversed with
him. They all report that he
seemed to be in his usual good
healtli and they were shocked to
hear the nows of his death Sunday
morning.
Mr. Norris was frequently in
Sandersville on business and had
many friends here. He was a man
of a happy and genial disposition,
a loyal friend and a good neigh
bor and there are many who will
sadly miss him.
He is survived by his wife and
several children.
Coroner A. H. Ainsworth sum
moned a jury and held an inquest
over Mr. Norris’ body. The cor
oner made a very diligent and
thorough investigation, examining
several witnesses and mating an
examination of the body. No
marks of violence or other evi
dence of foul play was discovered.
The jury empannelled returned
the following verdict: We, the
jury, find that the deceased, W.
F. Norris, camd to his death from
natural causes. No marks of vio
lence on the body. Signed M. II.
Bird, foreman, and also by the
others.
It is understood the coroner and
jurors believed that Mr. Norris’
death resulted from the bursting
•of a blood vessel and the rush of
blood to his brain.
The body was taken to Warren
county for burial.
While the city council may dis
pute The Herat,n’s account for
running a want ad for three'com
missioners, they will not do bo on
the idea that the want ad did not
do the work, but on the ground
that they selected three handsome
gentlemen, whereas the advertise
ment stated that good looks were
not required.
Never before did printer’s ink
show it’s power better. The city
got as a result of a short advertise
ment in The Herald three excel
lent commissioners, Hons. C. M.
Cason, W. R. Thigpen and Alex
S. Clmmlee and they will consent
to serve. We congratulate the
city. Mr. Clmmlee has been in
duced to withdraw his letter de
clining the honor and Mr. Cason
has accepted. It is understood
that Mr. Thigpen will accept.
The selection of the three gen
tlemen named will give entire
satisfaction and the public gener
ally are well pleased with the new
water and light commissioners.
They will take charge of the plant
as soon as they can qualify.

Among the improvements for
Sandersville during the next few
mouths will be several handsome
residences which will add much
to the growth of this city and will
aid in relieving the present con
gested situation and enable sev
eral, who are waiting, to secure
homes.
Messrs. Geo. C. Evans and A.
L. Evans are preparing to erect
two nice residences on the north
side of Sullivan street, sometimes
called Riley’s alley, which will
displace the two cabins now stand
ing there.
Col. M. L. Gross proposes soon
to erect a seven room residence
near the home of Hon. W. A. Mc
Carty on a lot recently purchased
from the Watkins estate.
Mrs. W. G. Summerlin will
erect two nice residences on east
Floyd street near her home.
The Sandersville Investment
Company is now preparing to
erect a very handsome cottage
home of seven rooms near the res
idence of Mr. G. H. Howard
Smith street.
Mr. Forest English will build a
nice residence on the Watkins
property near the residence of Dr.

In July, Dr. C. Reid opended a
kindergarten for Japannese in
Alameda, California, and already
twenty-five Jap tots are working
there. This is one of the best
means of reaching the older Ori
entals who come to this country.
And a little child shall lead
them.”
By request of Japanese students
of Alameda, the W. H. M. Society
has named the new home and
school for Japanese, Mary Helm
Hall. Most fitting this, since
Miss Helm has ever shown devo
tion to this people.

Council Proceedings
Will be Published.
The mayor aud^council of the
city have directed that the min
utes of the council shall be pub
lished monthly in The Herald
•and the Progress for the informa
tion of the citizens of the city,
and .this will be dono.
The law also requiras the publi
cation of the monthly report of
the water and light commission,
and this report will also be pub
lished separately, and in this way
the public can keep up with the
progress and business of the water
■and light plants.
Another negro woman is in the
toils charged with selling liquor
as a result of Mayor Evans’ Mon
day matinee, evidence having then
developed tlmt Lula Warthen had
sold liquor in Sandersville.
Just whether this charge is true
or not will be decided later on in
the city court, but the fact that
the case was developed is signifi
cant, showing that the officers are
vigilant and on the alert.
It is noticeable that more and
more of the tigers are run by
women and this is largely due to
the fact that they are more diffi
cult to locate, but the city officers
are determined to find them all
out and are making every elfort
to rid the city of blind tigers.
There were two convictions in
Monday’s court and heavy sen

Sunday afternoon, September 8th, 1607,
the sad nows wns received from St. Louis,
Mo., that the spirit of Bro. E. T. Averett
had winged its flight into the great be
yond. This sad intelligence, though not
entirely unexpected, was a heavy blow
to the hearts of his many friends and ad
mirers, but to none more painful, than
liis kindred by blood and marriage and
his brother Odd Fellows in this city.
Bro. Averett was a charter member of
Sandersville Lodge No. 271, and its first
Secretary, lie advocated and practiced
the sublime principles of the Order. Be
lieved nnplioity in the motto, Friendship,
Love and Truth, and was ever earnest in
the discharge of duty.
lie was grateful to his Creator, faith
ful to his country and fraternal to his
fellow mau. He was an upright, honest
citizen, a Christian gentleman and a truo
loyal brother and friend. Therefore be
it resolved,
1st. That in the death of Bro. Averett
Sandersville I.odge No. 271, I. O. O. F.,
is bereft of one of its most earnest and
enthusiastic workers.
2nd. That the individual members feel
a sad loss, and are paiued to realize that
they will never again meet Bro. Averett
in mutual council within the walls of the
Lodge room.
3rd. That in placing his remains with
in the tomb, we bury bis faults aud im
perfections, and cherish in our hearts a
lively recollection of all his intrinsic vir
tues.
4th. That to his bereaved and broken
hearted wife, is extended our sincere
sympathies, with open hands in Friend
ship, Love and Truth, ready to comfort
and assist now and always.
5tb. That these resolutions be spread
upon the minute book of the lodge and
that copies of same be sent to the wid
owed wife and to the two city papers for
publication. Fraternally,
