INTO THE VALLEY OF WEALTH RODE THE 100.
-Week's cleverest Cartoon by Johnson, in the New York Evening Journal.
SENATOR LA FOLETTE
NAMES RICH MEN WHO
RULE THE UNITED STATES
Rockefeller and Morgan He Puts in a Class by Themselves,
With Three Lists Following in the Order of
Importance in the Financial System.
Washington, D. C.—“Along with this enormous increase
in trust power has gone a steady process of centralization in the
control of that power until now the entire situation is dominated
by the Standard Oil-Morgan combination.
“The old fights between these two great powers have been laid
aside. Mr. Morgan’s picture adorns the wall of the inner room of the
Rockefellers at No. 26 Broadway. In combination to-day, they ar»
working together to gather in the smaller powers.
“Mr. Hill has been taught that he must not oppose the big
ones. Standard Oil got in on the Great Northern ore deal.
The Gould interests are being swallowed by the combine.
Morse and Heinze were neatly pocketed during the recent panic.
The Smelter Trust was given a drubbing and started in the
same direction.
“The Vanderbilts can no longer retain their important control ana
themselves see the handwriting on the wall."

Thus spoke Senator La Follette in
the third and final installment of his
memorable Bpeech against the Al
drich Currency bill.
Flings Charge Rack at Critics.
His assertion that the Industries of
the whole country are controlled by
fewer than 100 men had been at
tacked as sensational.
He took up the charge and flung it
lack in the teeth of his critics.
On t lie contrary, he declared, he
lmd been too conservative—a much
smaller number of men rule the na
tion's wealth.
The Senator quoted John Moody
to show an enormous growth in trust
consolidation and capitalization in
four years. In 1904 Mr. Moody
placed the capitalization of the in
dustrial franchises and railroad
trusts at over $20,000,600,000. That
amount bad increased more than
<11,000,000,000, or more than flfty-
live per cent. The $31,000,000,000,
he said, did not represent the finan
cial combinations, banks, trust and
Insurance companies.
Mr. La Follette named as next af
ter Morgan and the Rockefellers a
group of fourteen men, who, he said,
were "big operators and men of large
power and interests in their own
rights.”
In Harmony With “Big Two.”
These men, he said, find their best
interests “In working in harmony
with Morgan and Standard Oil.” No
combination which they could form
among themselves or with others
could cope with that power, he de
clared.
Here are the fourteen:
, 4 Vanderbilt, E. H. Hnrrimnn,
August Helinont, Thomas F. Ryan,
Frederick Weyer- Louis 8. Swift,
John Jacob Astor,
James Speyer,
James J. Hill,
\V. H. Moore,
hauser,
Henry c. Frick,
J. Ogden Armour
hcorge J. Gould,
J «cob Soilin',
A second class of men in the list
'ore the “stars of lesser magnitude,”
out men of wealth and power, who
n , or ( K In with the combine, and a few
i the higher rank of attorneys and
ank presidents of the system. This
Sroup follows:
<'. H. Dodge, O. H. McCormick,
Stephen S. Palmer, Drayton Ives,
' • A. Peabody, G. F. Baker, J.

D. O. Beid, Henry Walters, Nor-
man D. Ream, H. L. Higginson,
P. A. B. XVidener and F. B. Mor
ris.
Third Group of Financiers.
Of tin third group, including the
rest of the list, Senator La Follette
said: , j
“While some of them ecercised
large power and held many director
ships, it was a delegated power exer
cised by them in a mere representa
tive capacity. This part of the list
follows: „
“Edwin S. Mnrston, G. \\.
Perkins, John S. Sterling, Otto
H. Kalin, James F. Jarvis, A. W.
]vrotch, Paul Morton, H. V. Dom
ing, Charles H. Russell, Chftuu-
cey M. Depew, Oliver H. Payne,
W. S. Webb, James B. Forgun,
Moses Taylor, Francis M. Bacon,
J. A. Stillman, Luther Kountze,
H. P. Whitney, P. D. Cravath,
Levi P. Morton, H. H. Vreelaiul,
W. Woodbury Langdon, C. \\.
Morse, Charles M. Schwab, E. F.
C. Young, C. S. Fairchild, G. S,
Whitson, A. D. Juilliard, G. H.
Allen, V. Morawetz, J. H. Par
ker, Frederick Sturgis, C. N.'
Bliss, A. F. Oit, H. McK. Tivom-
bly, diaries Dawes, E. B. Ship-
Icy.”
The net result of the speech was
another victory for La Follette. He
demanded a Congressional commis
sion to consider currency reform leg
islation in order, that Congress may
be assisted in promoting the enact
ment of a general currency law in the
next session. At the end of the
speech Senator Beveridge arose and
inquired of Senator Aldrich what he
thought of the plan.
Mr. Aldrich said that the present
currency bill made no pretense of em
bracing banking reform, and added
that before this Congress adjourns
legislation would be passed providing
for just such a commission.

Ships That
Carried Themselves to
Sea.
The Empire Shipbuilding Company
of Buffalo recently had the contract
for preparing three whalebacks—a
steamship and three barges—for the
trip through the Welland Canal.
The vessels, which had been bought
by a Boston firm for the seacoast coal
carrying trade, were sent down to
Buffalo from the upper lakes. They
were tied up in Buffalo and the work
of cutting the vessels In fiwo was be
gun. The vessels measured 2S5 feet
in length, and it was found that eigh
teen feet would have to be cut from
each to ntako it short enough to pass
through the Canadian waterway. It
was no haphazard job. The forepart
of each whaleback was carefully re-
moved and the sections carefully num
bered. Then the pieces were stored
In the after hold. The odd appear
ance of the ships, as thus cut down,
attracted no little attention, for the
pilot house projected over the bulk
heads r.t which the huils were cut in
two.
The three ships, the Bombay, the
Bay City and the Baron, as thus
shortened, left Buffalo, passed Port
Colborne and down Lake Ontario and
the St. Lawrence to the shipyards at
Levis, opposite Quebec. Here they
were docked again and the hull sec
tions that had been removed were
taken from the hold and rebuilt in
place. Thence the ships Bailed out
through the gulf and down to their
destination at Boston.—Scientific Am

Minard’s Liniment Mfg. Co. Dear Sirs, — Your Minard’s
Liniment received and was used to good advantage, and I wish 1
had used it sooner, as it would have saved nie lots of pain and also
lots of money. With the first application I was able to lay out
straight in bed — what I had not done in seven weeks — as I had
been forced to sit on the side of the bed with my feet resting on the
floor. Have used three bottles of your liniment, and it has loosened
the cords so that I can sleep nights. I was able to go to work this
week and the rheumatism has not bothered me any, only on damp
days in the mornings, but will soon work that off. Am a long
shoreman, loading and unloading foreign ships, and have recom
mended Minard’s Liniment to several of my fellow-workmen that
have the same trouble with stiff j'oints. The other liniments I
used did not seem to take the stiffness out of the cords. Yours truly,
