I Interesting Letter From
a Former Resident.
Blythe. Ga . June 5, 190s,
Editor Hkhald,
Sandersville, Ga.
Dear Sir:—W ell, tli** election is
over, and you wear the laurels, of
the Washington county papers in
your estimate m the race of the
two candidates for the governor
ship. I was more than delighted
to see the showing she made for
Little Joe. The Progress, I be
lieve, claimed the county ' for
Smith by nt least 1,000 majority
and I believe at one time said
that he believed it would go for
him two to one.
Tell him ho will have to study
polities more closely, and post
himself better before we can again
swallow his estimate.
Well, we turned old Richmond
count v into the path of redemp
tion by a small number of 54 ma
jority, notwithstanding the bosses
and city ring sent their heelers
out in automobiles to all the
country precincts to take the
Smith voters to the polls and vote
them; but they had few passen
gers. I'll tell you. The country
people, I'm !>,ere to tell you, have
awakened to a realization of their
duties, and will no longer he dic
tated to by town rings and “po
litical domogogues.” “Selah.”
1 am no poet hut will give you
t.ho following as truth :
There is a fat fellow named Hoke
Who said Little Joe was a joke,
Hut now the election is over,
Little Joe is “in clover.”
And Hoke wishes he never had spoke.
SO THE JOKE IS ON HOKE!
You can give place to this in
your columns if you think it
worthy, hut make such corrections
as is necessary, Yours truly,
A former Washington co. hoy.
Now that the campaign is over we
believe all our citizens are getting
down to business again and so fur as
we can see they all appear friendly and
good natured as ever.
HOKE SMITH TO GO
TO NEW YORK?
His Georgia Friends do not
Wish Him to Leave
the State.
Atlanta. Ga., Juno (5—It, is
stated here today by a friend and
supporter of Governor Smith, that
he had it upon good authority
t hnt the governor contemplated
tendering his resignation as gov
ernor and moving to New York to
engage in the practice of law. It
was stated that some of his warm
friends who had heard his report,
urged him strongly not to consid
er any such action.
From other sources it was de
nied that the governor had ever
had any such thought, but that
lie would serve nut the remainder
of his term and continue to stand
for the policies on which he made
t he race.
Withdraws from Contest.
To the pcoplo of the 4th Hoad District :
After due consideration nod advising
with friends, I have concluded uot to
contest the election for Bond Commis
sioner. I atn advised by very capable
legal advisers, that the grounds I had
intended to nrge are absolutely good ni d
that there would have been no doubt ot
my having been seated as Commissioner,
as the illegal votes cast in the 00th and
88th districts would have been thrown
out and I would have had a majority of
the legal votes. However, in view of
the fact that much confusion would bo
caused nud hard feelings and strife
which would tako years to heal, and
considering that a contest would tako a
number of my friends from their bnsi
ness and farm* at this the busiest time
of the year, and the oliieo being such
that to properly disohargo tho dntfes
thereof the good will and co operation
of the people is necessary, which might
be to some exteut lost by a contest, I
have determined to allow the matter to
stand in spite of the nnjnst treatment I
have received and tho certainty of the
success of a contest.
Thanking all those who so nobly stood
by mo in tho election, and assnring
them of my very great appreciation.
Respectfully yours,
Geo. S. Tucker.
To the Voters of Washington
County.
I take this means and first opportun
ity to tender my sincere, heartfelt
thanks to those who cast their ballot for
me tor Tiensnrt r on the Itli inst. Words
nre inadequate to express my gratitude
and appreciation and l assure each and
every one that f shall endeavor to (111
the position with credit to myself and
sati faction to ’he public.
Yours to serve.
