The good roads movement for Wash

The State press comments ntul

it was a great democratic speech.
Its about time for the lawn mower
to come in contact witli the court lionsp

credit for giving the matter attention.
Le s politics, fewer dirty campaigns,
fewer office holders and less legislation

Extravagant expenditures are no ex

Getting ready for the fall campaign

Who would have thought that old
Sandersville would have taken so
much interest in baseball?
The latest husband of Madame Anna
Gould thinks they can get along on a
thousand dollars a day. It does look
as if they might worry along on that
amount.
A blacksmith is running for Govern

chance to be elected. He is enough

It is reported that a number of the

The convict lease system presents
a great moral question to the legisla

mighty poor argument for the system.
It is said that Governor Brown Elect
is as much a country man as is the
country man in a city store of local
fame. If that is true, Brown* is the
limit.
It was a deserved compliment the
weekly editors paid Editor Stanley, o
the Dublin Courier-Dlspateh, to
elect him President of the Georgia

The legislature finds itself trying to
pay more than live hundred thousand
dollars in debts with fifty thousand
dollars. We always suspected more
economy and less legislation was need

STRANGE BIRD DUEL
The lawyer aspirants for Judge and
solicitor of the city court who expect
ed appointment, from Governor Brown
in return for their loyalty to him,
have been shown a thing or two about
politics in this county.
We hope the legislature will not
hesitate to take hold of the convict
lease system and throw it over the
state line. Its rotten and has a bad
odor but it must be done this time or
last a good while longer.
The Governors message giving his
reasons for discharging Mr. Brown
from the Railroad Commission has
been delivered to the legislature. They
are about the same as given during
the campaign and the legislature is ex
pected to drop it where it is.
We cannot refrain from expressing
some dissapointment and regret at
Hon. A. R. Wright asa ball club mana
ger and rooter, but the fact remains
that lie makes a good beginning and it
is a fact well known that he is now
diligently studying all the fanitorials,
etc. and we have greut hopes of him yet.
In the years to come, grateful citi
zens will remember ourcounty officials
who now seek to build good roads by
taking thi6 county's portion of the
felony convicts.
A column each week is offered to the
friends of Mr. Watson who desire to
say anything for him in his race.
More will be when we can devote the
time to it. The Herald makes the
same offer to admirers of Mr. Bryan.
So let it come boys, if you have any
thing to say, but let it be brief.
Bishop Candler’s magnificent tri
bute to Uncle Remus is worth all the
monuments, and the sorrow that
touched thousands of hearts at his
death shows with what deathless love
this Prince was loved by everyone who
knew hint or read hie childrens stories.
One of the notable personages at
the Denver convention was Thomas
Robertson, of Missouri, who made his
appearance with a four-foot beard nnd
hair that hung down to his waist.
Robertson explained that in 1890 he
made a vow that he would never shave
or have his hair cut until William J.
Bryan had been elected president.
That was twelve years ago. and Mr
Robertson so far has kept his word.
It seems now to be “vip to all ot
democrats to contribute a ballot to the
procurement of a shave and a hair-cut
for Robertson in November.—Savan

THOS. J. SWINT
Attorney at Law,
SaniersviT.e, Georgia,
Office overNirst National Bank,
Battl* Between I an Aggressive Hawk
and a Patient Heron.
There is apparently nothing In all
blrdlanil that Is weaker and more help
less against a bird of prey than the
common heron. With its long sharp
bill it can punish worms nnd fish and
even administer sound punishment to
animals or beasts thuLoome within the
range the beak, Wit tne bird Is so
clumsy nnd its beak is so long that It
seems as If almost any kind of a sav
age bird of prey could jounce down
upon it ami seize It by the ueck or
bend.
Nevertheless tbe heron, like most
other creatures, has some means of
defense which we do not always ap
preciate. A few years ago while watch
ing a good size heron wading in the
water of a pond I was struck by Its
peculiar actions. Cocking Us hood on
one side, It listened and glanced up
Into the air and then trembled all over.
If it had taken fright at my appear
ance, why did it not fly awayV 1 was
wondering at this peculiar action when
suddenly a hawk, circling In the air
above, darted downward in one of 114
swoops. The terror stricken heron in
stead of flying away squatted down in
the water and looked up helplessly at
the descending hawk. But the hawk
did not seize Us prey, as I expected,
hut made u quick turn la the air and
started to attack Hie heron from the
other side. The latter merely turned
Its head around, always keeping its long
beak directed full toward the approach
Ing lmwk. Once more the hawk flew
upward and around and made another
effort to outflank the enemy.
These tactics on the hawk's part
were kept up for some time, while the
heron squatted down and met tho at
tacks with its beak always turned to
ward the enemy. It seemed a mystery
to mo why the lutwk did not kill the
heron without so much pulleying. Had
I been better instructed in the nature
of the heron’s beak and Its ability to
transfix an enemy with it Dwould not
have thought so strange of the hawk’s
maneuvers. It had evidently been hurt
in such an encounter before, and it en
deavored to worry the heron so that it
could he caught off its guard. But
after ten minutes of fighting it looked
ns if the hawk would he tlio first ono
to get worn out with the bloodless
eonlliot. It grew fiercer and more
savage in its attacks, and finally it de
termined to make the attack in ear
nest. Rising to a considerable height,
as if intending to fly away, it suddenly
dropped as If shot from a cannon, boil
ing to take the heron off its guard by
the unexpected and swift descent. But
the heron was once more prepared for
the conflict, nnd the terrible beak wus
pointed upward to receive the descend
ing bird. The hawk realized Its danger
at the last moment nnd tried to check
Its headway, hut its momentum was
too great, and It plunged downward,
but a lit tie to one side, until It struck
the spear-like beak ready to receive it.
Fortunately for hawk nnd heron, the
beak merely grazed the side of the
hawk’s body, ripping out a handful of
feathers and inflicting a slight flesh
wound. The hawk then tumbled With
a splash into the water, and before it
could regain its equilibrium again the
heron had flown away. The hawk
showed 110 particular desire to pursue
its prey and flapped heavily to a near
by tree nnd sat there for an hour think
ing the matter over.—George Etbelhert
Walsh in Outing Magazine.
