BE
WHATTHE PEOPLE SAY.
Savozurd, writing lor the Macon
Telegraph, called attention to the de
struction of our forests in the past, re
lating how nn old negro basket maker
belonging to his father bad felled trees
on whosever's land he found them,
which if standing urown to today,
would he worth a hundred dollars.
In the memory of young men now
living, people were not so particular as
they are now and we have all known
when we could direct our hands to get
a load of lightwood wherever we
knew it lay ora load of wood whore-
cver vve knew it was most convenient.
The Southern people, t crimps to a
greater degree than any other Ameri
cans, have been most extravagant end
wasteful and have thought less about
‘Maying up for a rainy day.
Hut times have changed and the
abundant resources are gradually but
surely giving way. To in- sure, there
is room for thousands and million*
more, but it behooves us to be careful
and remember our duty as citizens and
as men
Bismaik, the great German States
man believed that our government
would not last, because he believed
when the bountiful resources and the
wide expanse of country were tukcu up
by mulitiplying generations of men,
our republic would be the political
The question is do the people want
to elect the judge and solicitor of the
City court of Sandersville by popular
vote. That question will be vote on
in the October general election. If it
goes for the election, the people will
vote the next month, November I Win
for whatever Judge and solicitor they
want after November 1, 1000. I hose
nre the questions presented by the
city court act as amended, now pend
ing in the general Assembly. A ou can
hear all the talk you want hoar
about the hill and then some more
talk about Brown ns Governor should
not and that the act proposee is mak
ing a political foot ball of the court
and that its no such thing. You can
hour that there is politics in it nnd
that, there “nint”. You can hear that
Hon. B. U. Jollier and Hon. Iverson
Lord have had one VOD question set
tled forthemand that they haven’t.
You can hoar that the people demand
ed a charge and that they din’t. You
can hear all you want to hear about
the new city court bill. The bill gives
the Judge and Solicitor four years in
stead of two, some think the friends
of the fellows who want the jobs and
what think they will get them overdid
the tiling in putting that in the hill
and others think they ought to have it.
And there you are.
Unfortunately the convict lease in
vestigation frequently degenerate into
a political scrap.
Already there appear symptoms that
indicate the <i. (>, P. is is not so well
us was at first reported.
KICK KOLUMN.
Editor Kick Kolumn:
I.et me congratulate you on provid
ing a place for us to publish our views
and register our “kicks”.
Its almost tree planting time and its
well enough to give t he city just a
reminding kick so the ollicials will got
ready. 1 notice a few pecan trees on
the side walks, one in front of Dr.
Rogers residence now full of pecans.
Its true it takes them sometime to
bear, but why not plant some in the
‘missing places”. They make healthy
and beautiful shade trees. Hope you
will join me in demand for shade trees
in your own editorial columns.
I want to call attention to some of
the church people to trees, particu
larly the Baptist congregation, also
to the city school yard. Hope this
is a short enough kick.—En.
“Goodwishkr”.
Thais a fairly good kick.
Editor:-Lct me give a short hard
kick at the way Umpire Warthon pulls
oil a game.
“HimSORlHER”
Can’t join you. Its too long ago
and young men will make mistakes.
“Kick Kolumn” :-will you permit
a fellow who is often without a nickle
grumbling at the. loud hollering dis
penser “ llokey Pokey ice cream”.
“SiIISI'KIUKr”
My dear sir: when we reach down in
our joniik and the nickle isn’t there, we
often feel the same way.

The best way to judge Hon. Joseph
M. Brown is to let up now and judge
his administration by its fruits.
Mr. Taft is going to make an effort
to cary Georgia and will speak in the
State. Everybody cant carry Georgia.
It is difficult to see how those who
keep up the fight on Mr. Brown expect
that their conduct will benefit the
state.
HUMAN MACHINERY.
The marvelous inechimieiil inventions

The convict lease system is doomed,
hut while the light is 011, certain politi
cians mid news papers are taking adv
antage of the opportunity to try to
battleground between those Who want, gtftb ot |, pr politicians in the back,
and that under h form of government'
like .ours, the dissntisiied and the poor
could not be held in proper restraint,
because the power of the poor citizen
with the baljot equalled the political
strength and power of the man of
great property or greater intellect.
Under onr government today, tho
priviledges and benefits - granted to
classes against the producers of wealth,
have led to public extravagance our
forefathers never dreamed of. In or
der to grant these privileges, heavy
taxation of the producer is necessary.

^fenl‘, many of them useless expendi
tures and most of them examples of
waste and extravagance, the battle
has begun, with favored classes strong
and powerful and the opposition so
divided bv party lilies as to give the |
* greatest hope to those who enjoy j
special privileges.
Noto’dy Cute vital improvements, but
thousands of unneecessary oiliee hold-
draw from the public tresury and j
hundreds of thousands of unwise calls j
are made upon it.
More than a billion dollars are drawn |
from the people each year, und the
sum grows larger in order that those
who benefit from these taxes may he
protected while they exploit the pro
ducing masses.
The resources of the country nre
great and the people generally do not
now complain so bitterly as they will
in years to come.
But there is no danger of the power
Hismark feared. The time is not yet |
ripe. When it is, ami the people
realize the full meaning of what the
present conditions will ultimately lead
to, by the peaceful power of the ballot,
Americans will halt the extravangance
and waste of our government and go
back to a wise and frugal governments
honestly administered, with the rights
of the rich and poor the same and the
privilege and license of one 110 greater
than that of the other.
The same lessons in economy we nre
learning us individuals must be learned
by our law .makers and must be prac
ticed by our government. Our govern
ment is not so rich and our resources
not so great, that we should neglect
public debt and exact useless and
heavy taxes from those who produce
the wealth of the country.
The convict question is making a I
big political stir just now, but “Lit-1

system.— Dublin*Courier Dispatch.
Senator Felderqnotes the governor

immediate and complete abolishment
of the convict lease system. If only
the House and Senate had known it.

The Marietta Journal says, nnd it is
the truth : “The legislature passes a
great number of laws every year that
are never heard of afterwards. The
statute books are full of dead laws.
Fewer and simpler laws would meet the
situation. The tendency of passing
laws, many of them worthless, is on the
increase. Stop it,”
