Its said there will be a warm election
locally in October.
Even the present legislature has en
acted some good laws.
Ty Cobh is married and the Law*
renceville News - Herald thinks that
means more home runs forTy.
Senator Felder says the governor will
not approve but one convict law. 1 hen
why not pass that one and come home.
The people of Washington county
laid up eighty thousand during the
panic according to the stock taking of
Receiver Duggan.
It is estimated that the mosquito hns
destroyed more men than live today.
About time to talk more about mos
quito extermination.
The Increase in taxable property in
Washington county was not due entire
ly to the accumulations of the news
paper men, of course.
It is said that blnck root has damaged
Cotton at least ten per cent in the
South. Considerable complaint is heard
about it in this county.
Practicing political economy is
thought by some to consist in a few
men controlling national, state, district
and municipal politics for their section.
If the house and Senate had only
thought to ask the Governor what kind
of n convict law he would approve, lots
of money could have been saved the
State.
MR. BROWN NOT A CAN
DIDATE.
The report recently sent out from
Atlanta mentioning Yancy Carter, of
Hart. Judge E. J. Regan, of McDon
ough, Judge J. K. Hines, of Atlanta,
and Hon. J. Pope Brown, of Pulaski as
possible candidates of the Indepen
dence League for governor against
Hon. Joseph M. Brown,the Democratic
nominee, is erroneous and absolutely
without foundation, at least so far as
Mr. Brown is concerned. When ap
proached on the subject by the Dis
patch and News, Mr. Brown emphati
cally denied that he had ever enter
tained a thought of becoming a candi
date for governor in the coming elect
ion. lie said:
'I nm surprised that my name
should be mentioned in that connec
tion. I participated In the primary,
and shall support the nominees.”
As is well known, Mr. Brown was
not a supporter of‘‘Little Joe” in the
recent primary, but he is a democrat
—first, Inst and nil the tiine—and
does not relish the idea of being pine
ed In the attitude of n bolter and with
those who are seeking to defeat the
Democratic nominee. In fact he said
thnt lie did not consider it n compli
ment to he mentioned for governor un
der such circumstances, and he did
not hesitate to let it be known that the
report was started without his knowl
edge or consent.—Hawkinsville News
and Dispatch.
ABOUT THE SCHOOL
The best thing we have next to the
churches of the city is the school and
by the way, its about the best high
school in old Georgia if any body
should happen to be inquiring of
you.
Just that thing is what each of us
should keep in mind and tell to others
as we come in contact with. Wo need
to oiler to share the blessing we enjoy
with others.
There are lots of people looking out
for the best school and the attention
of these should be directed to'Sunders-
ville.
This school and our excellent Chris
tian Community, our city improve
ments and conveninces our productive
county and our splendid location for
health must we build up.
Tell others about the school.
KICK KOLUMN.
Editor Kick Kolumn!
Why is it so few of the papers have
not opposed the extra session of the
legislature and demanded that more
time be spent in attending to business
nnd less in talking about how women
should dress and why dogs should be
muzzled? Why should legislators
meets at ten o’clock and adjourn at
one, with so much work to be done?
‘‘SmHORIBKR”
Tapers are not responsible for the
condition any more than others. Your
kick will do good in future, no doubt.
—En.
‘‘Kick Kolumn” :-Why not get to
gether and work for Bryan and Kern?
The fact that the democrats will carry
Georgia is qo excuse for inactivity.
The majority should be large enough to
show Georgia’s strong opposition to
high tariff and special privilege.
Democrat.
Thats a good way to begin the light.

liabilites of said superintendent, nnd

pedient. This July 18th, 1908.
Editor: Will the change propose^!
in our city court act be for tiie benefit
of the whole county or for the benefit
of paticular men. It seems to me that
is the question.
CiTizan.
Editors will get fewer letters and
circulars now. Judge Russel, of the
Court of Appeals lias decided that sel
ling liquar through letters soliciting
mail orders is a violation of the pro
hibition law. The decision was unani
mous.
A South Carolina papers asks, "Who
is John Temple Graves, of Georgia,
anyhow?” He is a charming little
man who was born in Carolina and
early manifest his precocity by leav
ing Hint State for Georgia.—Macon
Telegraph.
Anyhow, Representative Duggan
has shown lie knows how to manage to
get a bill through when lie takes a no
tion that way and that lie thought lie
was rendering his county patriotic ser
vice goes without saying, whatever the
result may be.
If all who are at heart opposed to
class legislation could unite in one
determined campaign on one candidate
what a quick and decisive victory
could be won ! But democrats seem
to have a habit of prefering to scrap
among themselves and those inclined
to believe tliut way differ on less im
portant questions.
Reform is the battle cry and watch
word of tite age. The real article is
hard to find and reform itself, though
much to be desired, is the most danger
ous of all the words in the dictionary
of politics.
In its name, hypocrits may find suc
cess and demagogues may become vic
tories. It offers a premium on deceit
and falsehood, and is rolled ns a sweet
morsel under the tongue of the politi
cian for revenue only.
Tliis is ail age for reform, for reform
in the reckless extrngnnee of our gov
ernment, for reform in the class legis
lation in our country, for reform ill the
prison system of our State, for reform
in the methods of elections and in
other tilings which occasionally reveal
abuses.
The difficulty is not so much to find
what tilings need reforming, but how
to wisely apply the correct remedy and
to select reformers with good brains
and true hearts to apply them. There
is perhaps but one safe way and that,
is for the voter to always know that
eternal vigilance is tiie price of reform
as it is tiie price of liberty.
GENTLEHEN OF THE JURY.
Editor:—There seems to be mnny
efforts to embarrass Mr. Brown when
lie comes into office by making tiie de
ficit ns large as possible and saddle on
tho state as large a debt ns it can be
made, but perhaps tiie people will
remember who is responsible for these
unwise and extravagant expenditures.

Two very complex questions will
be presented to the negroes in the Oc
tober election. One is whether lie
should be allowed to vote at all, and
tiie other is whether lie should vote to
elect by popular vote a judge of the

privilege is taken away or let Governor
Brown appoint the dispenser of justice
in Washington county. One negro ex
