“NOW is flic Winter of my discontent,” ex-!
claims the p'xir man who during the, past year,
bought bis goods on credit, and now finds him- j
w* l nimble to meet bis promises to pay. His fiilis J
ar- li*rg- r, by onc-balt, tlian he thought they
w< ii and be, and several articles are charged to bis .
•ccount of which he has no recollection. For '
many things he has paid almost double what be
would Lave had to pay had lie. bought ft r
<’asJi at Dennis A B;i lri w ill’s. He is
drily tormented with yellow envelopes, contain
ing statemehi saying: ‘•Please call and settle
above account, or it will be placed in the hands
of an officer for collection. At night he rolls ami
tosses upon his pillow; and if, perchance, ho
dozes off', he dreams of sheriffs an.l constables,
and sees the handwriting upon the wall: “Will
l* sold before the Court House door, Ac.” Be
fore day dawns he has visited the Infernal re
fions and is about congratulating himself upon
is escape from his tormentors, hut is aroused
by the voice of someone who says: “Pay me
that thou owest.”
The more fortunate person who is able to pay
his account promptly, m iy escape for a time, the
troubles alluded to, but he is only putting off
the evil day. It will come in due season. Year al
ter year he will find his profits growing less, and
he will realize, too late, that if lie had the capi
tal of the Bank of England, he could not afford
to pay the enormous per cent, charged by mer
chants who sell on time.
We arc aware that many persons begin the
Ne w Year with good resolutions, to us<- economy,
curtail expenses, and to buy exclusively for CASH.
Ibeae are worthy resolves, and should \te faith
fully kept, and those who so keep and practice
them are on the sure road Hint leads to health,
honor, prosperity and happiness. For a while
they may have to deny themselves of many of
the luxuries, and l possibly a few of the necessa
ries of life; but after awhile all these will be giv
en unto them.
About a year ago we adopted the exclusive
Cash System, and offered a reward of one tho is
nnd dollars, for tho man woman or child, who
could buy one dollar’s worth of goods from us
on Credit. Money was scarce and times were
bard and mauy predicted our early demise. We
are glad to state that since that time our busi
ness has been steadily increasing. Almost ev
ery day we receive substantial encouragement
from parties who have seen and felt tho evil of
the credit system, and like good and true men
are lending their aid and influence injcrusliing a
most pernicious system, which threatens the
bankruptcy, not only of individuals, but the
entire country.
We have numerous customers now, who, pre
vious to that time, uev. r entered our door. They
are good, honest, sensible men; men who know
how to appreciate the value of a dollar, and waut
to get value received for it. They come and de
posit it with us, knowing that our profits do not
include twenty-five per cent, for bud debts,
which is always added by merchants who sell on
time, to cover their losses by parties who never
pay.
Now we are desirous of increasing our already
long list of customers, and we think we can
make it to yonr interest to trade with us. Our
stock will always be the largest in the place, and
{£ while there are many goods which are sold very
& close by all merchants, we can safely guarantee
SI a saving upon a general bill of from twenty to
B&bhirty per cent., in purchasing from us.

We are baffling for the Right,
Unenoed by Fear, unbribed by Gain!
Never play at a game of chance.
Go to the Masonic Hall Friday night
Take your family to tho Good Templars’ En
tertainments.
We like economy in any one, but, Good Lord,
deliver us from a white man who is too penu
rious to give a little lap-slog a crumb of bread to
keep it from starving.
Talbot Superior Court ! —This court will
con veil u here next Monday week, the 10th. of
March. A great many cases are on the docket,
and it will no doubt lie an interesting session.
Burned to Death ! —A little negro boy, four
years old, on the plantation of Mr. Dozier
alxmt one mile from town, was burned to death
on Monday. He was trying to kindle a fire
when his clothes ignited and burned off* of him.
He died yesterday.
Tickets to the Good Templars’ Benefit for
sale at the stores. Fifty cents each.
Still They Fome.— We are modest when we
stale that the Standard is enjoying a larger
prosperity now thau at any period since its es
tablishment. Its constantly increasing circula
tion commends it as one of the most desirable
mediums for the Advertiser in the .State.
Bear in miud that the entertainments for the
benefit of our Good Templars, take place to
morrow night and Friday night. Doors open
at tf o’clock aud performance commence at halt
past seven, precisely. The performance Fri-
day night will be entirely different from that
of Thursday night.
Kemeiul>er the Good Templars’ benefit at the
Masonic Hall to-morrow night.
The Macon Telegraph accuses us of having
simple tastes. While we plead guilty, we would
inform Mr. Telegraph that he got the wrong
chap by the ear when he alluded to us in connec
tion with the goober-jwrolmig. It’s to be hoped
that you will be a better Manager in future, and
give “honor to whom honor is due.”
Be sure and go to the Masonic Hall to-morrow
night and see that laughable sharadc, “Oil is
bettor for the Wig than Vinegar !”

Returned ! Our worthy Representatives,
dipt. It. M. Willis and Dr. C. B Leitner have
returned from Atlanta and are looking exceed
ingly well. The Atlantese must certainly feed
well
We also see our young friend Lonnie Dennis,
who helu a clerkship in the Senate, back with us
again, appearing finely.
A man never loses anything by aiding a good
cause, h > give the Good Templars fifty cents to
morrow night-, and you’ll never regret it.
“You’re Mighty Right!'* We warn all of
our readers not to read the advertisement of Den
nis A Baldwin, elsewhere, it they would miss a
treat, but go right to their mammoth store and
buy goods cheaper than ever before. They are
the clevirest merchants in the world and are
bjiind to give you the worth of your greenbacks
Go and try them, and stop this credit for it will
clothe you in rags, ere long
Mrs. VaudcnlxTg, whose musical talent has
never been questioned, will piny for the enter
tainments, at thp Masonic Hall, to-morrow night
and Friday night.
Smoke-house broken into !—The smoke
house of Mr. liawrcuco Dozier was entered by a
black thief, cne night last, week, and robbed of
several pounds of meat. George Dozier, colored,
was suspicioned, aud the meat found in his
house. He is, at present, boarding at the Hotel
de Hall, and will no doubt bo nominated as a
candidate for the penitentiary.
“The Last Loaf,” the best drama ever pre
sented in Talbottou, can be seen at the Masonic
Hall, Friday night, lie certain to go.
Attempted Suicide !—We learn that Mr. R.
H. Bulloch, a lawyer, of Flint Hill, in this coun
ty, tried to kill himself, a few days ago, by cut
ting his throat and stabbing himself in the
breast. He was found iu the woods insensible,
fnd bis condition is still critical. . The act was
committed in a fit of delirium tremens. Mr. Bul
loch was a candidate for the Legislature ,ut our
last election.
Singular Accident—a Negro shoots iiih
Wins! A negro on the plantation of Mr. Trice,
a few miles from town, shot his wife yesterday,
in a strange manner, and showed forcibly what
rnay result from the careless use of fire-arms.
Ho was sitting iu the door of his house witli his
gun in his lap, picking the tube, when it fired;
part of the load taking effect in the leg of his
wife, who was sitting by the fire-place. Tho
wound is not serious, but the negro was badly
frightened. He had taken the lock and stock
off and had only the barrels of the gun on his
Jap-
Trimming Trees and Burning Brush-How
a Whiskered Farmer came to Grief!— Not a
great distance from this place there is a certain
big plantation upon which hapj>ened a very lu
dicrous little scene, a week or two since. The
hired man on this farm is a jolly good fellow,
remarkable for thu length of his whiskers, his
good-nature and industry. This follower of the
plow aud the hoe has a very passionate fond
ness for trimming trees and clipping shrubbery.
To climb up to the topmost bow and hack off
the limbs beneath, with hi.s little hatchet, is his
chief delight; he loves to see them fall promis
cuously about the root of the tree. Long, glim,
slick pine sappliugs are his preference; one, for
instance, that he can bend over with the weight
of his manly form and deliver himself gently to
terra firma. Well, about two weeks ago this gay
friend was engaged in the aforesaid favorite
amusement, when he was disturbed in quite a
lively way. An assistant piled aud burned the
limbs as last as our lriend cut them off. They
worked on this way for sometime, and at last
came to a short stubby pine loaded with limbs
and surrounded by a huge pile of dead brush.
The lover of the sport shucked his coat and
waded into that tjve. Oh ! how the bark flew
and limbs fell as he slung bis little hatchet. He
was soon going up with astonishing rapidity;
his countenance beamed with pleasure, his eye
lids dilated with joy, as he went up, while his
assistant stood off in perfect awe. But the brush
beneath him was now discovered to be on fire
and soon the whole pile was wrapped iu a wlid
sheet of flame. Tho poor fellow saw his condi
tion at once. What was to be done ? The fire
was all around him and he saw no chance of es
cape. After a lengthy thinking, he concluded to
try the bending over system. He went to the
tiptop, clasped his hands around it.shut his eyes,
gave a whoop and over he went landing in the
edge of tlie burning brush and coming out with
half his hair and whiskers gone. Ho says he’ll
be hanged if he ain’t disgusted with trimming
trees.
