TALBOTTON STAND VRT), WEDNESim MOP.XIVO MVU 1 ' I 5. 1K73 Gove ni* S;:ii Ii We regret to note a caption i spirit in some sections of the State, relative" to the administration of onr worthy Gov ernor. He is accused of infidelity to his friends, and zealously written and spoken against as being incompetent to grasp the live questions now agitating the public mind. The Senate and the Governor parted not on the best uf terms the coldness growing out of the sum mary disposition of some anxious ex pectants for office, and a difference of opinion as to the qualification of those appointed. True,Governor Smith has not followed out a prescribed line in his se lections, reserving the right of independ ent action in all his dealings with the State’s interests, knowing to whom h > is amenable, and wli wo behest? it is his proud duty to subserve. From our knowledge of Govern o'- Smith as an upright, independent, able and conscientious gent leman, s a t and only by the purest motives for his coun try’s weal, wo are not prop ire 1 to be lieve he would, in the exercise of his ex ecutive prerogatives, be influenced by partition motives, or prov • poloyal to friendship when its den auds wi re compatible with the public good. In deed his position would bo anomalous were it not lied 1 about by the vein lin ed shifts of malice; especially in tie s ’ days whim there au- twenty applicants for every office in the gif; of gubernato rial sancti >n. Entering the public ser vice at a time when the greatest confu sion reigned in all .1 part mm' s of S'a Government, he not only reduced the chaos to order and sy ;t>:nati;-..'d th car pet-bageutangbrmonts.but • dv.anci and tin old Common wealth at o.i e to th" front rank of Southern S fes by iiE : ble, impartial aduiinistralion. Governor Smith is known and trusted by t.l. yeo pls whose servant he i ~ It is noted an a •••inu'ge ' iinc‘di r.ee that Napo! con 111 died at Chie. lhurst at 10 :45 a. m., which wa precisely tie hour when the great clock of the Tuill cries stopp ■ 1 afier th s pal r- \va -t fire to by the comm inc. English railroads are expcrii'i n'inc. and it is said s i -.•> -fully, wi.ii a or ik worked by electricity. The invention consists of the applic ition of electro magnets, exerting a forco of six hundred pounds, to pulleys on a s wing shaft un derneath tlie carriage. B pressing a key the guard is en- .ble to bring tin train to a stand-still. Tha profits of farming should consist in the improvement of the farm it. elf and its belongings, and th ; e can be no better investment than this. That is very poor farming, though it may nom inally show a cash balance, that leaves the homestead in a worse, instead of a better condition than it found it. Bunsa Claims. I Washington let ter Bays the amount of claims prcfmvd to the British-American Claims Com mission ruus up to seventy millions d-d --lars. and arc of such a nature as to ne cessitate the sending out to every State and territory in the Union, and to near ly every country in Europe, to take tes timony. At this rate the Alabama Ar bitration verdict will not turn out such a big thing for the United States after all. L’Ordre of Paris, publishes the follow ing strange destiny of the sovereigns who have ruled France during one brief century: “With the exception of Louis XVII., not one of our nionirchs has ended his life tranquilly in the Tuillc ries. Louis XVL was guillotined at La Place de la Revolution; Napoleon I. died in exile at St. Helena; Napoleon 11. died in exile at Iteichstadt; Charles X. died in exile at Holyrood; Louis PhiUippe died in exile at Claremont; Napoleon 111. died in exile at Chisel hurst.” This-from the Atlanta Herald: “Pres ident Broun, of the Georgia ,State Col lege of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts, at Athens, announces that the buildings for the accommodation of stu dents having been completed, fifty ap plicants for immediate admission will be appointed, without regard to c unities, upon application to him. Condidates must be sixteen years of age, and have a fair knowledge of English, geography and arithmetic. Board, students fur nishing their own rooms, $12,.71) per month. The department of agriculture is under the charge of Prof. E. M. Pen dleton, and the institution affords all the necessary facilities for imparting a thorough practical education. The latest novelty is the invention of lire proof paper shutters made of iron and paper pulp. Various tests have boon made, all of them highly satisfac tory. The principle involved is based on the fact that the sheet-iron covering is so thin that it. cannot expand, and heat generates carbolic acid gas by con tact with the pulp, thus preventing com bustion. The shutters are light and simple. In the United States Senate on Wed nesday. an important bill was introduced authorizing the Texas and Pacific Rail road Company to consolidate with or lease any railroad in Texas or Califor nia connecting with its main hue, on such conditions as may be prescribed by tin- laws of those States, and also to e instruct branches from the main line to i o uts in Utah and Colorado, or tile S ate line of Nevada, and south to the Mexican boundary, one branch north and one south, to he constructed Iron the main line in each of the I erritories of New Mex c > and Arizona. Qam:’s Ovsmts. Directly after tin reading of the report of the Poland Committee was concluded, the Other day, Oakes Ames went, down stairs to the House Restaurant, and taking a va cant chair at a table with two members of tin- House, inquired with a chuckle, if they would allow the wickedest man in Congress to sit with them, and re ceiving- an affirmative answer, he pro ceeded to put a dozen fried oysters where they would “do the most good.” The Loudon Telegraph has made a discovery. Tt tells its readers that “the time !.....- unquestionably come when a thorough acquaintance with the current history, politics, fashions and geography of the United States will be, deemed in dispensable to the younger generation of our British statesmen.” It. is about time they were learning something on these subjects. Cotton in Romiuy. —-The cotton news from Bombay is to the effect that in no previous year has the cotton crop of that see!im promise 1 such excellent remits. Unices some unfore "vii accidents should destroy whole fields of cotton, the ship ment.:; from Bombay, dming' 1572, will aggregate not less than 1,2511,000 bale. -namely, an increase of a million of bales above last year’s shipments, 1872. Great attention is being given to the culture of cotton in India, and that ac counts for the heavy increase of the st a ple. As it can now lie shipped to France and England through the .Suez Canal, instead of around’the C.qie of Good Hope, the profits to all parties are great it, and that fact will stimulate India to still greater efforts in that field of native production. European Republics.— Europe has now five Republics. The three leading ones are Switzerland,France and .Spain. Then there is .San Marino, in Italy,a little Re public of less than 10,000 inhabitants, and yet one of the most ancient -States in tin- world. The fifth is Andorra, < n on the southern slope of the Pyrenees, of even a smaller population, but dating its existeaee from the early centuries of tlie Christian era. And now Portugal gives signs of presently swinging into line. Rut the question is, will these Re publics “stick V” Factories North and South—Thier Profits.—Under this head the Colum bus Enquirer lias an article from which we extract these figures: ‘ The Eagle and Phoenix Manufactur ing Company of this city reports profits equal to 21 per centum of the capital invested, by last year’s operations; the Columbus Manufacturing Company re port 2T per cent.; the Tallassee Factory l,j. per cent.; and the Roswell Factory I) pur cent, for tlie last six months of 1K72. We have not before us the reports of the Augusta and Macon factories but their successful management heretofore is a sufficient assurance that their gains are in the neighborhood of those reported. Look ing a little farther north, we have fully as good a report from the Petersburg cotton mill, whose net profit for 1872 is 25 per cent, on its capital stock. This mill runs 100 looms and 3,022 spindles. It is stated in one of our exchanges that “the reports of the Northern mills rep present their profits to be from 4 to G per cent, for six months during the last year, or at the rate of from 8 to 12 per cent, per annum. Beware of strong drink; it will steal your brains and damn your soul 1 “ WH\T IS TT BCT A M VP OF BUSY LIFE, ITS FLUCTUATIONS AND ITS VAST CONCERNS/’ TALBOITON, GA., WEDNESDAY MARCH 5, 1873.
