This season, our citizens have wrestled with
measles, mumps, chicken-pox, typhoid fever,
and now, it is rumered that we will have the
whooping-cough.
Our Local Bar. —Our lawyers, E. 11. Worrill,
G. N. Forbes, J. M. Mathews aud Willis A
Willis have their hands full at this court, and
are stepping about pretty lively.
Maj. Smith’s Duck Pond, below the Meth
odist church, is a great resort for some of our
boys and young men on Subbath mornings,
just before service. They love to see the ducks
swim.
Mr. T. J. Lanier, of that unsurpassed paper.
The Telegraph and Messenger, was in our office
yesterday looting in fine health. He is doing a
fin** business for the Telegraph and Messenger,
which is very popular in this section.
German, the tonsor, has been very busy this
week working on judges, lawyers, constables,
bailiffs, jurors and countrymen. His shop, in
the front room of the Standard building, is a
popular place. Every body should patronize
the barber.

A Suggestion ! Year before last our citizens
were frequently entertained by lectures, on dif
ferent subjects, at LeVert College. Like a great
many other enterprises, these lectures have
dwindled into the dreary past, and it lias been
at least eighteen months since we bad the pleas
ure of hearing one. Now, we suggest that they
be resumed, and hope President Mangel will
use his efforts in this behalf. Let us hare the
lectures.
Guano.— The people of Talbot are going it
lively on guano this season. We observed a
few evenings since about forty wagons pass en
route to the railroad, for the precious stuff, Que
ry: Will corn receive its application to any ex
tent? We wot not. Besidus.it would not be exact
ly right to go back on our Western com cribs in
that manner. Can not our farmers treat their
com lands half as liberally as the cotton rows,
and thus secure to themselves an easy conscience,
and a plethoric purse. Try it for the novelty of
the thing.

claims the poor man who during the past year,
bought bis goods on credit., and now finds him
self unable to meet his promises to pay. His bills
are larg r. by one-halt, than he thought they
wou’d be, and s< v< ral articles are charged to Ins
account of which he has no recollection. For
many things he has paid almost, double vrhot he
wouM have had to puv had lie bought for

daily tormented with yellow envelopes, contain
ing statomets saying: ‘ Please call and settle
above account, or it will be placed in the hands
of an officer for collection. At night he rolls and
tosses upon his pillow; and if. perchance, he
dozes off, ho dreams of sheriff's and constables,
j and sees the handwriting upon the wall: “Will
be sold before the Court House door, Ac.” Be
| fore day dawns he has visited the Infernal re
gions and is about congratulating himself upon
his escape from his tormenters, but is aroused
by th voice of someone who says: “Pay me
I that thou owest.”
The more fortunate person who is able to pay
his account promptly, nnv escape for a time,the
! troubles alluded to, but he is only putting off
I the evil day. It will come in dm season. Year af
! tel* year be will find his profits growing less,and
!he v. ill realize, too late, that if he had the capi
j tal of the Bank of En land, he could not afford

j We arc aware that many persons begin the

These are worthy resolves, and should be faith
