Had the District now designated ns
th< Yettowstono National Park been
known in tha earlier stages of civiliza
tion, there would have been many a le
gend of classic romance as closely asso
ciated with its wonders ns oracles are
with the Delphian groves, or the gloom
of Avemns with the lake that rests on
the sulphurous, soil of the. Caiupana.
EvMNhMUM x port for 1872, of the
Superintendent of the Park transmitted
to the Secretary of the Interior, breaks
out at intervals in the superlatives by
Which language naturally attempts to
describe that which surpasses it. 7’hi-
of JJie Exploring Expedition un
der Prof. Hayden and the engraved
drawing accompanying them have wide
ly familiarized the public with the lead
ing features of this land of geysers and
mud volcanoes/of plunging cataracts
and precipitous canons. 7’he report of
the (Superintendent gives many new par
ticulars o/ the scenery and the curiosi
ties, And 'specifies*the simpler details of
route, outfit, aipl mode of travel, which
are so necessary to the traveler in region
little known. July, August and .Septem
ber are the best months for visiting it,
aud these, fortunately, are the months
when our busy people ure most at liber
ty
Which of us, reading of the sunny
slopes of Vesuvius, or the fleecy sum
mits of the Alps, iiMpot sighed in think
ing that a wide aii'Tstormy ocean inter
venes between us and those attractive
scenes? But grander, wilder, and yet
lovelier scenery is now within a week’s
journey, all by land, and almost all by
rail. No tale of travel, or even of East
ern fairy-land, oilers anything stranger
than the tipper Basin, where hundreds
of geysers project vast quantities of
steam and water in every conceivable
form, gleaming in the sunshine w ith
rainbow ijolors, glittering in moonlight
with a dazzling whiteness. Around
Yellowstone Lake there are snow-clad
mountains, whose peaks have as yet
proved inaccessible, being among the
loftiest on the continent. From the bos
om of the lake between its green and
beautiful islands, from time to time the
water springs in air, and jets of steam
arise. The Grand Canon of the Yellow
stone is a chasm forty miles in length,
from one to three thousand feet in depth.
Jets of hot vapor issue fiom its sides.
Cataracts plunge into it. From its
depth* drt sfars ar* visible in the day
time.
To the naturalist and the student of
the physical sciences, there are oppor
tunities here of the grandest character.
There.is not only novelty and the chance
—nay,the cqitainty—of liberal additions
to nbte-bfioltfc and cabinets; there'is a
field where the most stupendous opera
tions of nature and the problems of the
earth’s history are developed Indore the
very m-p* pf the observer. There are
basiaaiiied with the most varied color
ed porphyries, and waters in which ii
any object be plunged it is covered with
a calcite as pure as alabaster. Then
are depth* of sulphurous vapors and of
steamifcg&pnigs- that the plummet’has
not yet sounded. And there is not only
an infinite variety in these objects of
curiosity; they are changing in form and
character, some hour by hour, some age
by age. In some places the central
beat has piled np its monuments and de-
in-others it is evidently dein in -
ishing in power. Within the two years
since their discovery the geysers have
closed and new ones have opened. Pine
trees more .than an hundred feet in
height, that were growing on the mar
gin ‘Of a tntld volcano, have within the
same period sunk into aud been engulf
ed volcano iUteli luisueasr'
ed op'cfafloUK,leaving only driect hillocks
and a shapeless crater.
Surely in these days when the frailty
of the means employed to preserve voy
agers from the dangers of the sea has
been made so terribly apparent, the ar
tist, the tourist the seeker for health,
for pleading,for for scientific knowledge
may, with advantage, take counsel of his
fears, his purse, and his convenience, and
find all tjiateye or imagination craves
within the limits ot our own glorious
domain.
Dt*."Gretoe, Superintendent ot the

How the Girl of the Period Mi st
Fix Up to Be in tueStyu:.—Mrs. Burn
ham. the correspondent of the St. Louis
Republican, writes on the above highly
important point:
“A lady to be extremely stylish now
must be narrow enough taken in front,to
pass between the handles of ft wheel
barrow without touching either side,
but she can make it up by any amount
of projection behind. Her head must
be narrow; broad heads are very un
fashionable. Her hair must all go to
the top. Her hat mrfst have all orna
mentation massed at the back. The
sides must in all respects be flat aud
narrow, the hat plastered on behind,
the hair parted on the left with some
curls aud crimps on the right of the
forehead. Then an embroidered camel's
hair polonaise; side fastened with im
mense clasps of oxydized silver. A lit
tle chunk-handled Knglisli umbrella,
swinging, like a sword, bv an oxydized
chain. A skill heavily ’ trimmed, tile
fullness taken entirely to the rear, and
rather short flout and sides, but sweep
ing quite a train just behind. That’s
tiie pretty picture of to-day.”
The New York Herald lias an elabo
rate editorial article on the causes of the
present advance in the currency price
of gold, the substance of which is that,
after all, clique combinations in W.dl
street have less to do with it than the
natural laws of trade; that we are deep
ly in debt to foreign countries, and gold
is needed to adjust that indebted ness;
that the stock on hand is small, ufid is
daily growing less, while we are piling
up importations as if pay days were
never to come. The article concludes
with apprehensions of another commer
cial and financial crisis, but the writer
prudently refrains from telling us the
particular lime for its commencement.
A Noijle Two.- The little town of
Lexington, Virginia, is indeed highly
honored in being the resting place of
three modern immortals, w hose ir mes
the South will not wiilingjy let die.
There sleeps in that town three great
men of the South—General Stonewall
Jackson, General it. E. Lee and Co:u
modoie M. F. Many. In their mental
characteristics they wofe very dissimilar,
each from the other two; but in this
they resembled each other, that they
were great, good, patriotic and pious
men- an honor to their birth place,
their section and their age.

From the statement of the tax receiv
ed on malt liquors autl tobacco the re
mark of Lawson, member of the Parlia

ards were the sheet anchors of the Brit

applied to this country. The receipts
of the present fiscal year from tax on

five iron furnaces —those in operation
turning out from five to seven tons of

now putting up another of thirty tons

Permanent stone dry docks will su-.

most instances where new ones are to
be built, in the government navy yards.
A permanent Btone now being
built ai Mare Island, costiug $1,000,000.
The indications are unmistakable
that Russia is to bo the horse raising
country of the future, so far, at least,
as Europe is concerned. A recent enu
meration shows that there are nearly
20,000,000 horses in that country alone,
which is a surprisingly large number re
lative to the population.
The ‘‘funny man” of flu Danbury News,
whose paragraphs are so widely copied
bv the press, is James Mougoiaery
Bailey, who was born in Albany, New
York, in Id 11 served as a private in a
Connecticut regiment throughout, the
war, was c ipi.ilred at Gettysburg, and
imprisoned at Richmond for two mouths.
His letters from tile army, over the sig
nature of “11. P. Mauton,” were sent to
the Danbury Times, aud made for their
author a considerable local reputation.
Mrs. llniriet Beecher Nuiwe speaks of
motherhood in a pretty way when she
says :
“It would sometimes seem as if moth
erhood ware a lovely artifice of the
Great Father to weau the heart from
selfishness by a peaceful and gradual
process. The babe is self ill another
form. It is so interwoven and identi
fied with the mother's life tlut she pass
es by almost insensible gradations from
herself to ii."
This neat and appropriate obituary
notice appears in the Louisville Couri
er-Journal;
“Died, in Washington recently, a lit
tle orphan boy named Civil .Service Re
form, who was apprenticed to the Pres
ident last fall, just before the election,
file President unfortunately put him to
bed the other night, to sleep between
Cases and Fl ed. Grant, vs ho overlaid
him, and the miserable little wretch was
smothered to death. Editor of Har
per’s Weekly and other friends of the
deceased will attend the funeral with
out further notice. .Services by the Rev.

A True .Statement. —Most-to be pit
ied of all the beings on the face of the
earth, is the man who says he lias no
time to read a newspaper—and offers
that as a reason for not subscribing to
one. If his neighbor's paper is any
where convenient, lie will reach for it
and read it v. i,h avidity and pleasure.
Solom m lia.l such creatin es in his eyes
when lie said “Stolen waters are sweet."
How can a citizen discharge, intelligent
ly,the duties incumbent upon him at the
ballot box, unless he, is a regular read
or of the papers V Through the intel
ligence of the citizen alone can our form
of government be perpetuated and hand
ed down to posterity. Intelligence is
him foe if tyrants and despots. Tito
press has done more to educate the
people than all other agencies combin
ed. A free press makes a' free people.
It is, therefore, a duty a mail owes him
self and Iris people to subscribe tor a
newspaper.
Suicide. — Dr. Holland has a “Topic ”
in ,Scr.oner's for May, on the recent
discussion of suicide from which we
quote the closing paragraph
If man is nothing but an animal, if
this life is all there is of his existence,
and the question simply concerns the
amount of comfort, to be got out of it in
this transient world, why, let him do as
he likes with himself and his friends;
but lie who regards the piesent scene
as only the foreground of an infinite ;
spiritual feature, through which, if one I
tread faithfully the prescribed passages j
of pain as well ns pleasure, lie shall find
himself in higher pathways, as a conse
quence, at the last, —we say he will take
life whether it be convenient or iucon
ven out, and hold it as the gift of God,
inalienable by any reason of infirmity
or suffering, or hopeless disease, or cost
Ito other life through necessary minis
try. 7he doctrines of Prof. Newman
aud Mr. 7ollemuche are unchristian
doctrines. They carry tis back into bar
barbarism- back into the darkness in
which children killed parents that be
came a burden to them, and mo hers
strangled infants that could only inher
it their own sufferings. It is an iiila
inous criticism of the divine wisdom, an
insult to Providence, an assault upon
the safeguards of society, and a reflect*
ti<Ai upon human nature* and human
destiny, from which all Christian man
j hood recoils as from the touch of a ser
