Charlie [Carlton was one of the
happiest mortals in Washington the

the government departments. Not
that it was a matter of such thro ne

fortunate ones, who hung week after
week and month after month about
the secretary’s offices* ifick with hope
deferred, for Charlie's father was a
well-tordo Western fanner, and
would gladly have had his boy-roJ

of service would begin oil the first
day of tho following week, but that
in tho intervening three days he
could call on the present incumbent
pf the position at desk No.—, who
would instruct him in the duties
that would be required of him.
Charlie hastened without delay to
the <Uqnufmeut building, and was
directed by an officer m charge
where to find desk No -. Coining
upon it suddenly ho was startled at
seeing a sweet-faced maiden seated
before it. Her blue eyes looked np
inquiringly from llio official-looking
documents spread out before her,
' and she asked in a business like
tone:
‘What can l do for you, sir?’

What more colild he do than hand

sprang to support her,but by a very
great effort she controlled herself,
and banding back the letter, she
said, in a tone choking with unnt

‘lt is .true; you aro fo bo mv suc

of it.’
‘JLh it possible V. Do they often
treat employees to dismissal like
this?’ he blurted out, indignantly.
‘Frequently, and it is a little pain- j
ful for tho moment;’ she replied, I
with a bitter smile, and with unshed
tears in her eyes, adding hastily, as
if to draw his attention from herself:
‘I will now explain to you tho du
ties of tho position ?’
4c would have liked to question
lie* more, bat this little lady had
suddenly grown frigid as an ice
berg. Almost unwillingly seating
himself be-ido her at the desk, ho
tried to master tho intricacies of flic
heaps of official documents lying be
fore him, while she explained, illus
trated and advised, with ..a terse-,
business like graphicness that sur
prised him. Ho discerned at once
the vpry great business capacity ibis
little blue eyed damsel possessed
and in bis wonder at it—-for he had
always believed woman’s capabili

1 very great doubts, too, whether the
government was doing a wise thing
in appointing lier successor, lie si

yet all tins from a blue-eyed chit of
a girl who seemed not over sixteen
or seventeen at most.
I Once illere was a long silence,’

of a deep sigh. Startled and look

coursing madly down the fair cheek
of his instructor. She flushed red
and, dashing aside the tear, turned

then with tho wavy folds of her hair

All of that flight Charlie Carlton
tossed in sleeplessness, and thought
less of his new honor, of tho duties
of his position than of the sweet fa

Ho could ffert drive her from his
mind; tint terror o| her faeioon real*

sad, patient resignation, all haunted
him, until his brain was almost

And, to out do nil ejso, ho aeldaily
caught lumself kissing tho places oh

Charlie was tip by daylight, mid
it seemed an ago from that lime un

full half hour before business be

blnoseyed damsel; was there. Lint
the blue eyes were dim and swollen,
and, though she made a great effort
to greet him with a pleasant smile,
her taco was, nevertheless,..very sad
and careworn. If ho had before

after reading from that face the se

her eyes, looked up to thank him,
when apparently divining, from
something in his face, so ti nder with
sympathy for her, how much his

‘I am deeply grateful, Mr. Carl

‘And yet,’ Jioj-aid, ‘you seemed for
a moment rejoiced at tlto.lhoiigbt tif

‘I was thinking of another then,
not of myself,’ sho explained very
sadly.
‘What other?’ fiercely questioned
Charlie, tho flame of suddenly awak

‘My invalid mother, Ido try so
hard not to complain or feel dts

‘You must, Miss Marsh !’ he re

‘Since you will persist in making a
martyr of yourself, just to benefit
mo, it is too bad that there is not
some way iu which wo could both
hold tho position in partnership.—
Tho salary is large enough to sup
port both ot us.’
lie started violently and his face
brightened, apparently at somo hap
py thought.
‘Wo nan arrange that, Miss Marsh,’
he replied, ‘or 1 have a bettor plan,
if you will accept it. I know of a
position, suited only to a lady, and
which you can till more satisfactori

emolument of tho position will at

Do you accept ?’
*<>, gladly, Mr. Carlton,’ she
exclaimed excitedly, in tho exube
rance of tier sudden joy. ‘lt all
seems too good to bo true, and T
shall bo able to repay yon for your
kindness to mo. When can 1 feel
sure that this new position is to be
mine, and how soon can I enter iq -
on its duties ?’
‘ln reply to both your questions
I can say—at once. Thu position is
that of—my wife.’
The utterly bewildered, amazed
expression that passed over Nettie
Marsh’s face at this moment was too
comical for mere words to express,
Dropping her face in blushing c.m
fu mu before his anxious, tender
scrutiny of the depths of tier blue
eyes, sho stammered out:
T I did not understand you; in
do I 1 did not, or I would not have
given you that hold uuswor.’
‘J Jut I have your promise,and you
will not withdraw it?’ lie questioned,
very anxi iii.-ly.
■| I don't know, T can’t think
what is right. O, please spare me!’
she pleaded, pitifully, in lrcr help
lessness.
‘Li..mu, Miss Marsh,’ ho replied;
‘I ask you to beeoino my wife iu t
from a desire to gain the paltry Hill
ary of this situation, nor merely
from motives of sympathy over your
helpless' position, but because in the
single day iu which I have known
you I have learned to sincerely ad
mire and truly love you. I shall not
withdraw my resignation until this
evening. Tho answer you will then
give me shall determine whether I
am to pis ado over dealt No.— or
leave tliis place miserable and un
happy forever.’
A grateful look for this rospito
was Nettie’s only reply.
The evening of that long day
c ime at last -that day during which
these two young people, working at
the same desk-, blushed every time
their eyes mot, started guiltily every
time they touched each other, and
trembled every time tliny addressed
each other -that day which, in the
amount of work free from erasures
and blots done by these two, was a
daad loss to Uncle Sam; and when
Nettie Marsh was giillilv of stealing
away without saying a word to
Charlie, ho suddenly blocked her
path, holding the resignation of his
appointment to desk No.—open in
his hands.
‘What disposal shall I make of it?‘
ho asked, meaningly. ‘You know
my terms.'
‘I—I think you had better destroy
it,* sho stammered, turning her face,
beaming with happy blushes, and
her eyes, eloquent and dewy with
tender emotion, fell upon him fora
single moment, and then hiding
them in her hands.
And thus it happened that in los
ing her position in tho government
service, Nettie Marsh gained another
position for life.
