A COUNTRY NEWSPAPER FOIt THE MASSES-DEVOTED TO CIVILIZATION AND MONEY-MAKING.
TALEOTTON, TALBOT COUNTY, GEORGIA, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1878.
Ills OVPKNT.
Two boats rooked on the river.
In the. shadow ot leaf nud tree
One was in lovo with the harbor;
One whs in love with the sea.
The one that loved the harbor,
The winds ot fate ontbore,
But hold the ether longing,
Forever against the shore.
The one that rests on the river,
In the shadow of leaf and tree, •
With wistful eyes looks ever,
To the one far out at sea.
The one that rides the billow,
Though sailing fair and feet
Looks back to the peaceful river,
To the harbor safe and sweet,
One frets against the quiet
Of the moss-grown shaded shore;
One sights that it may enter
That harbor nevermore.
One wearies of the dangers
Of the tempests rage and will;
One dreams, amid the lilies,
Of a lar-off snowy sail.
Ot all that life can teach ns
There's naught so true as this—
The winds of fate blow ever,
But ever blow amiss.
Grand Jury Presentments.

To Hon. M. J. Crawford, Judge presiding
We the oi the Grand Jnry. drawn

In onr luhorw and eflbitfi to curry out the

ON FINANCE.
We have examin'd I he books of the Treas- i

After clom- txnniinntiou we recommend
foi belter semit> of iho nrisonerH the fol- j

similar iron, with bonnets over each win
dow'ot the lower room; also that a hole in
the gable of tno north end bo repaired.
'J lie p.-neral condition ot the. (Joint House
we find very good, with a few repairs we
recommend to be made. One blind on the
west end needs gome attention, and recom
mend the blinds generally when not in use
to be kept fastened Also that the stove
pip* in the grand jury room which smoke
be repaired, and a leak in the roof of the
building be attended to.
To feenre more comfort we recommend
that a railing be placed back of the seats in
the Court mom to render the jury more
comfortable.
ON PUBLIC ROADS AND BBIDOBH.
From all sections of the county with few
exceptions, the public roads are r 1 ported in
excellent condition. On same roads rocks
have fallen back so ns to interfere with trav
'd, to which the attention ot the proper au
thorities is called.
We regret to announce under the instruc
tion* of the lust court, ordering all roads
properly posted throughout the county, any
inattention or neglect, but such it becomes
onr duty, and we find, with few exceptions,
lfie work done ineffectual, and recommend
those primitive boards which do not bear j
an intelli ent inscription or direction bo re- j
moved, arid in their places at correct inter
vals or distances designating miles, boards
well cut or painted, lx? erected, at cross |
roads and prominent places, w here none al* j

a long the public thoroughfare mile posts
of good oak and chestnut, with notches cut
and figures denoting number of mil’s to
correspond, lie ent on same and placed in

Deeming ilv preservation of good order
ami th peace of society of most eminent
importance, we cinuot upon our peo-
pie t*e eavnrstly the m aiutiiuence and res
pect for law.
It has been brought to onr cars, and it
pains us to revert to so unpleasant a re
flection, that thoughtlessness ou tho part
of a tew persons should disturb a religious
body and in of such contingency we
recommend in future the arrest and prosecu
tion of all persons who vi date the law.
There is one other important subject we
desire to bring to your consideration, and
it is the establishment of an Agricultural
and Mechanical college or n branch of the
same at Collinsworth Institute near this
place.
We desire to secure its location hero
from many influential motives. The eligi
bility ot location, refinement and intelli
gence of our community, exemption from
all malair.il or contagious diseases; mag
nificent climate W'tLr traits and diversified
products of farm and labor: excellent
water, cheap board, easy transportation, t
daily mails with every facility or advantage !
that would promote the comfort health or |
happiness ot thp student, cqnuncnds the
location to our earnest support and highest
consideration.
With this expression of our views, ,vo j
would call tin attention ot our Represen
tatives in the next Legislature to tho im
portance of securing a bill tor the estab j
lishment of said institution, at which the j
sons of our farmers and the people of wes
tern Georgia would be educated free of
tuition; out of .1 fund known as a land
scrip fund presented by general govern
ment to tho Slate of Georgia, for educa
tional purposes.
We recommend that our Representatives
use every effort to secure said bill lor up- [
propriution in the next Legislature. It be
comes our pleasure again to renew our ac
knowledgment for the courteous hearing
and tho great ability your Honor corn
mauds in the discharge of your official du
ties -toward our body.
To our worthy and most efficient Solici
tor, we return onr grateful assurances ol
appreciation for the many acts ot kindness
shown 1 s dining our d<-liberation.

Women are not aeeus'omed to hear so
ber truths from masculine lips, nor read
them from masculine pens. Pretty much
all they hear, or read, is embodied in the
sentiments of a public oration on “Eo naL
Influence,“ on commencement occasions,
or in the beautiful nothings, that are whis
pered to them under the lamp light in fes
‘ive assemblies.
While I yield to no man in a chivalrous i
devotion to the. sex, l propose to divert
myself of all h ntiment, and state a few i
facts as they appear to a quiet “looker on j
in Venice. “
Tho season for commencements, camp
mootings, and associations is about ever;
and it has been a noticable, as well as a la
mentable fact, that most of tho bad behav
ior, or tho instigation to it, has proceeded
from the other side ot tho house.
There is always a certain etiquette due
the public especially when that public
consists of a congregation of worshippers;
and the more prominent one's posit ion, and
the wider one's influence,the grm'ei is tl o
obligation to observe it. T hold it as an
axiom, that any we’l bivd lady, will con
form to the ritualism of tho church, in
which she finds herself; and when the con
gregation are at pruyors on their knees, she
will not bo found sitting upright, ►.ending
neither answering, l.or bantering glances,to
the young man in the next pew. Much
less will she disturb tho devotion of others,
with silly chat, or subdued giggling.
A prominent paper recently protounded
the very pertinent question: “Are our
morals as a nation declining ?“ The
whole answer, now, and hereafter, must re
main with the women- The mothers of
America have it in their power, to niiso our
civilization to its most exalted height, or to
sink it lower than France in her most dis
solute day ever knew.
Let the women bn not unmindful of the
fierce light that beats upon them from
(.very quarter as examplavs in morality and
religion, and no woman can strike a blow,
at the laws bv which she has been hedg'd
about, by Providence, and tho accumulated
wisdom of ages, without the I low recoils
on herself.
She may be the sweetest rose that ever
bloomed in a Indy's bower, without in the
least being a prim rose.
These admonitions do not njudy to wo
men as n general rule, they only form the
exception; also ! 1 see almost daily, young \
men, whose breath is reeking with Ilia j
fumes of mean tobacco, and meaner whis
key, paGng their attentions to lovely, and
