A COUNTRY NEWSPAPER FOR THE MASSES -DEVOTED TO CIVILIZATION AND MONEY-MAKING.
TALFOTTON TALBOT COUNTY, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 1879.
Joe Whites’ Temptation*.
Deacon Jones kept a little fish
market.
‘Do you want a boy to help you ?’
asked Joe White one day. ‘I guess
I can sell fish.’
‘Can you give good weight to my
customers, and take good care of
my pennies?’
'Yes sir,’ answered Joe, and forth
with he took his place in the market,
weighed tho fish, and kept the room
in order.
‘A whole day 'for fun, fireworks,
and crackers, to-morrow,’ exclaimed
Joe, as ho buttoned his white apron
around him, the day before Fourth
of July. A great trout was flung
down on the counter.
‘Here’s a royal trout, Joe. 1
j caught it myself, you may have it
fen ten cents. Jnst hand over the
money, for I’m in a hurry to buy
my fire crackers,’ said Ned Lon; , one
of Joe’s, mates.
Tho Deacon was out, but .Joe had
made purchases for him before, so
t he dime was spun across to. Ned,
who was oil like a shot.
Just then Mrs. Martin appeared.
‘I want a nice ttoul for my dinner,
to morrow. This one will do, how
much is it ?’
‘A ouarter, ma’am;’ and (he fish
was transferred to the lady’s basket;
and the Bilver piece to tho money
drawer.
But. here Joe phased. ‘Ten cents
was very cheap for that fish. If I
tell tho Deacon it cost fifteen he’ll
he satisfied; and I shall have five
cents to invest in fire-crackers.’
The Deacon was pleased with
Joe’s bargain, and when the market
was closed each went his way for tl o
night. But, the nickle In Joe’s
pocket burned like a coal; he could
eat no supper, and .Kits cross and
unhappy. At could stand it
I no longer, hut walking rapidly, tap
ped at the door of Deacon Jones'
cottage.
A stand was drawn out, and be
foie tho open Bible sat the old mail,
i Joe’s heart almost failed him, but lie
told his story, and with teats of sor
row, laid the coin in the' Deacon’s
hand. Turning over the leaves of
the Bible, tho old man read: ‘He
that covereth hi.s sins shall not
prosper; hut whoso coufesseth and
forsaketir them, have . mercy.
Vuti have my forgiveness, Joe; now
go homo and confess to tho Lord,
but remember you must forsake as
well hk confess. And keep this lit
tle coin as long as you livo, .to re
mind you of this first-temptation.*'—

office in the United States to become
a place of deposit. The last project
developed a good deal of popularity
last winter, and is likely to become a
law.
It will be perceived that there are
many of these measures vital to the
public interests, and measures which
the American people desire to see
pushed to a place on the statue book
in a business-like way. The Radicals
have no idea, however, of attending
to tho pnbiic business, and even pro
posed on the first day to inaugurate
their political campaign against tho
South, by proposing thprcducTon of
the number of Representatives from
the South. Of course their insane
malignance will not be gratified. If
they had complete control of Con
gress they would lot business go en
tirely and proceed to carry out the
Boutwellian and Mortonian. pro
grame of territorializing the South
ern States.

A Wushigtou dispatch, under

vewurded with “fat“ positions. And
ns to discharging him simply for be
ing drunk on Tnanksgiving day, that
was tho height of injustice and in
gratit. do. Why just, look at Grant.
Ho is about to take a trip which
wib c ist the taxpayers of the coun
try four hundred dollars- per day.
Ml’. Haves should, as soon as this
uiobel Radical ex-policeman recovers
his senses from his dehmieh, make
him the amende honorable for the. |
bad treatment bo has received, and
.offer him no less a place than Unit
of Minister to Berlin, made vacant
by the death of thu late Bayard
Taylor. If he is an “insnfleraldo nui
sauce,” so much the greater reason
that ho should he sent out of the
country.
If you take four, five or six glass
bottles, breaking off the bottoms,and
invert them, filling one within about
two inches of the top, with clear
sand; then mix some ciav with the
sand and phuje this in another bot
tle; then with the clay and sand
some charcoal, put that in a third
bottle, and fill stll another bottlo
with a loamy vegetable soil; then go
to your barn cellar and make up a
few quarts of liquid manure, and fill
up your bottles, examining tho lip
uitl ns it comes through the filters,
and you will find that in that short
distance a largo amount of fertilizing
matter lias been parted with, though
there is a marked difforenae in the
filtering properties of the different
compounds contained in tho bottles.
A great many experiments can he
performed by farmers, with very,

in,the best appointed labratnry. A
lysimoter is an excellent contrivance
but it is only a test for the soil it is
in, not for another test of the soil as
to the filtering powers of that soil.
