nothing of ti e advantage gained hy gtttfi.g
the crop in market in »,dv uc*.
Winter oats sown in he month * f October
will ripen upward-* ui a month earlier than
that sown in April I cannot sp*ak y>ar
ticularly, but I mppese oat- lik-- wheat and
ryo. fan hv repealed seeding in the autumn,
b‘’C"n*e sufficiently hardy to resist «he win
ter frosts, and vice versa I was told a short
time since by an intelligent Irish farmer,
that in Duhtin county, Ireland, oats is al
most exclusively sown in the ntrumn.
In making the experiment alluded to, I
plowed an acre lot of light loam in the
month of November uheie potatoes were
previously grown. The plowing may be
done at any time during the winter when
the land is sufficiently dry and friable. Ip
such land harrowing is unnecessary from
the fact that the freezing and thawing pro
cess renders the s il sufficiently level, friable
and in good condition to receive the s**ed,
which will he sufficiently covered by The
porous condition of the land. Previous to
sowing, the oats ought to he pas-ml through
a fanning n ill, giving a heavy blast of
wind for the purpose of separating the
light oats and \v< ed seeds from the heavy,
well ripened oats. After the plants become
sufficiently rooted and the soil dry, a har
row might to he passed over the crop, fol
lowed hv .a roller. Previous to harrowing
and roliii g. it is advisable to S' w clover
and orchard or mixed grasses fra Mice ed
ing crop No advantage can he gained by
steeping th** seed. An advatrag? wilt he
giiimd, however, hv coating the -eed (f r
an ac e) with ten bushels of dry sifted
ashe-. with enough beef or pork trine, or
its equivalent of salt, n-ing black water fr
dilution (btine is preferable hecau-e it Con
tains niter, blood, etc.) to produce a ma-s
to the consistency of thick cream < r lard ;
next add the roots ; mix by turning over
the mass frequently, nr until the oath be
comes well coated ; then dry the mass with
Euffic’pnt gypsum or dry screened clay •
screen the oats from the mass and sow irn
mediately. The screenings will he valua
ble for the potato and other .crop-, or for
the preparation of additional seed Two
to throe bushels of oats are sufficient to
seed an acre ; the former quantity if the
seed is heivv. short and wed ripened.—

Turkey Breeding.— We raise poultry
chi* flv f*r the table. What the producer
warns in hi- stock is good quality of flesh,
early maturity and capacity to make 'he
most flo.-h out of a given arm tint of food.
A turkey weighing fifteen pounds i just as
good f*r the table as one weighing thirty ;
and irmst housekeepers would prefer them
under twelve nounds. In most markets the
lighter weights would bring the higher
price, It is onlv in the region of l irg* 1
hotels and hoarding- houses, that the very
large birds bring an extra price It, takes
about three ve irs for a turkey to attain bi
largest weight. If at twelve months a gob
bler reach thirty pounds live weight, at two
two years i e would reach thirty five, and
at three years forty or more. Bur ii is rare
to g* t a male bird over forty pounds, a* and
then it is generally by some | r>>ee*s of .-Miff
ing that destroys his stamina and often
times his life. This weight is esc? l lent
sometimes, but about the time one thinks
he is a most sure of a forty five prouder,
the prodigy sickens and dies. It may he
assumed, then, that forty pound- is ah rtt
tho limit in which a vigorous turkey cock
nriy he safely carried, and from half to
two-thirds of that weight is the hist safe
limit,* for the hens. With breeders of this
siz* and a little under we shou'd get large,
strong chick, that will economize food nn*i
mature earlier than the offspring of com
mon sized birds. No birds yi-ld more
quickly to treatment time, the turkey. Tbe
influence of a large-sized gobbler in ail ok
is immediately visible in tin* increased - z**
of the chicks. The introduction of w and
blood increases the hardness of the vung
A 1 irge proportion of the eggs will hatch,
