Articles of impeachment have been pre
fered against Gov James, of Nebraska.
CoKi.Er exhausted nearly the year’s Con
tingent Fund in the t»hoFt time he occupied
the chair.
Supreme Court. —Chief Justice Warner
continues ill, and in consequence the Su
preme Court has been adjourned until the
6th of February.
A temperance man who lives in Danbury,
Conn., never intends to give up the cause.
He has signed the pledge ninety-three
times.
Tin case of the State of Alabama vs.
Ncleon, for the murder of Gen. J. 11. Clan
ton, has been continued at Knoxville, Tenn.,
until the fourth Monday in February;
The Railroads. —We are placed und a r
obligations to the managers of the State
Road and the Macon and Brunswick Rond
for favors of 1872, and h'ghly’appreciate
the favors.
The bridal outfit of the celestial young
woman who is about to marry the Emperor
of China, it is said, will cost one million of
dollars. Her father must have been 8
Bullock.
MEXioo.-r-Things are not wearing a very
pleasant aspect in Mexico. The sections
seem to be arraying themselves against each
other as the North and South, with us,
formerly did.
Griffin Literary Society.— We are glad
to see the literarv spirit agaid rising in oor
neighbor city, Griffin. For some weeks past
the exercises of her Literary Society have
been suspended. Phccnix like, rise and
come again.
Investigating Committee. —The Com
mittee appointed to investigate the fairness
of the lease of the State Road, adjourned
last Saturday, but will assemble again just
before the assembling oT the Legislature in
July.
Challenge —Judge James L Dunning,
on the 30th inst., presented the challenge
to debate publicly the question i
"Should or should not the privelegc of
voting be allowed to woman/'
J. T. Spence accepts the challenge.
The Ohio House of Representatives have
passed, by a vote of seventy-eight to seven
teen, a bill admitting as competent jurors
persons that may have formed an opinion
as to the guilt or innocence of an accused
from reading newspaper accounts ot an
offense alleged to have been committed.
Press Excursion. —The La Grange Re
porter suggests that after the duties of the
next meeting are performed in May, there
be a Press excursion. We fuffy approver of
the suggestion, and think the idea a
good one. Nothing would contribute more
toward bringing about a brotherly feeling
and perfecting the organization.
Oldest. —A man by the name of Thacker,
the oldest rn she United States, 128 years,
died a short time since. He was born in
North Carolina, about 1753, and served un
der Gen. Jackson at the battle of New
Orleans, was at the battle of Tippecanoe
under Harrison and in the Black Hawk
war in Illinois.
Mardi Gras. —There is quite an excite
ment in some sections of the State in regard
to the Marui Gras excursion to New Orleans,
on the 13th of February. Much pleasure
can be derived from the trip. Those who
have “traded in love” and expect to have
the contract closed soon, have a most excel
lent time for a bridal tour.
The delinquent tax-payers of Bullock
eo»nty, Aku, are very numerous. The
Collector of the county has in the local
paper, a sou-r column- advertisement, pro
posing to sell, on tßeffrst Mondbyin March,
the lands of delinquent taxr-papers. Some
thing is the matter. Guess the* taxes are
too heavy. Perhaps it is because the county
is named Bullock.
AftointMe^t. —We notice from the At
iant’n- Sun of the that Gov. Smith has
appointed Dr. E. A. a well-known
and highly appreciated of Upson
county, Superintendent of Public Works
and Keeper of the Caprtbl Grounds, and
other property at the seat of Government.
The Governor shows his economy by
combining the two offices and appointing a
man to perform the dutiesnf both offices, at'
the salary attached to only one of them.
We noticed sometime since that Col. P.
W. Alexander had been appointed the
Governor’s private Secretary.
A bK£l has passed both House* of the
Illinois Legislature enacting that do intox
icating liquors shall' hereafter be sold in
Illinois without a license, and no license
shall issue unless the party* applying there
for shall give a bond in the penal suin' of
three thousand dollars, with two free h'old&rs
as securities, conditioned that they shall'
pay all damages to any person, in person or
property, by reason of selling liquor under
said license; the penalty to be recovered in
the name of the State for the use of any
person iniured by liquor sold- by such li
censed persons.
Sign* of War.
The Florida Express says; "Major Tier
nan, commanding officer at Barrancas, we
learn, has received orders to mount the
heavy guns at Fort Pickens and at Fori
Barrancas. We presume that this is done
to be prepared for an emergency iu case of
a difficu.ty with Spain ”
The Charleston News says, the note of
preparation for a possible unpleas mints*
with Spain, or even a hostile hug from the
Busniati bear, can be heard even in the r
quiet peaceful harbor. It is certain that
order* have been issued for the overhauling
of the harbor defenses at Charleston, in
volving itn.jKirtant changes and the expendi
ture of large amounts of money. F<>rt
Moultrie and Sumter sre about to receive
their proper armament, and tfie work of
mounting thirty or forty heavy guns in
! these works is under contract, and will
probably be begun to day. Fort Moultrie
is in good repair, but Fort Sumter will
require a vast amount of w *rk to make it
once more the key to the harbor.
The Savannah Advertiser, of the 2lst.,
says that ihe steamship Magnolia, on her
last trip from New York, brought out some
twenty or more laborers, ibis instalment to
be further increased at that port to the
number of one hundred men, to constitute
the Working force of C >l. Ludlow, of the
United States Engineers, who will at once
commence operations in building extensive
and formidable earthwork*, and otherwise
strengthening the fortifications of Fort
Pulaski. The working plans are looked
I for by every mail, when the force employed
will at once be dispatched to Fort Pulask’.
Barracks for the quartering of one hundred
laborers are first to be erected outside of
the fort, when the work of throwing up
extensive earthworks in the V of the fort
will be at once commenced. Guns of fifteen
inch calibre are to be mounted. The work,
a-ide lr m the equipments, is to cost twenty
six thousand dollars, and it is surmised
that, in view of the present aspect of affairs,
especially the complications with Spain,
the work >*f further strengthening Pulaski,
in addition to the earth batteries, will be
c 'ntinued by the Government, transforming
it into one of the strongest forts on the
Atlantic coast.
Capt. R. T. Renshaw, who was lately
staying at the Mills House, left on Friday
night, in obedience to orders from the Navy
Department, to take command of the Woo
sack, a splendid ship of sixteen guns, be
longing to the s >otl) Atlantic squadron.
Thu New Orkatts Tiottblcg*
We are proud to sre? that these are some
voices in the halls of Congress yet bold
enough to represent the truth as it is. Mr.
Yoorhees, on the 22 1 in*t., does himself the
great credit of denouncing the WoFmoth
administration in L uisiana. He hesitates
not to assert that the law making bra* ch of
the government has been preveotei from
convening by an American officer, in com
mand of United States troops.
He further claims shat eoch troubles arise
him the sy.-fem upon which Congress ha*
aeted iu reconstructing the S>»uth, at and
siffirms that the worst governments in the
whole world, without exception, are the
governments of the Southern States at this
hour. They are unparalleled for their in
iquity, their infamy, and their outrages.
He is precisely right. Virginia has been
plrwiged into an enormous d*»*bt. Louisiana
has resting on her to>- lay between Stfty and
one hundred millifmcMbsr* of indebtedness,
and our owrr State groans under her im
mense sum while her former Executive, out
of four hundred and forty-six applications
for pardon, has perhaps granted three hun
dred and fifty. Mr. Voorhees is correct in
alledging such disorder to the pernicious
system of congressional reconstruction.
Th re a** 1 omens of stiff greater evils in
• the Suture, unless the spirit of the National
law rmffting power ie changed. We have
fears that Congress i’vr p-orvmng the track of
the constituent Assembly of France, Which
constructed the fabric of despotism by de
stroying the parliaments, provincial estab
lishment and Ct urts of law ; annihilating
the old divisions and rights of the provinces,
, and at the same time ©on {Renting the pro
perty of the Church and ! exiling the-nobles
thereby preventing all resistance and een -
tTaliaing alt powes i«‘ t?he officers of the
government.
The spirit of innovation andcfentralization
is rapidly increasing, and the people should
take warning while corrupt carpet-baggers,
present-receivers and selfish tnpn guide the
helm.

Senator!'Titumbulij, on the 19th inst.,
during the discussion' of the Civil Service
Bill in the Senate, quoted the report of the
Civil Service Commission, stating: that
ninety millions, or one fourth ofthe’Yfevenue
of the Government was lost in the collec

tried it, know that it cured them; those wljo have
not, know that it cures their neighbors and friends;
and ail know that what it does once it does al
ways that it never fails through any fault hr neg
glect of its composition. We have thousands upon
thousands of certificates of their remarkable cures
of the following complaints, but such cures are
known in every neighborhood, and we need not
publish them. Adapted to all ages and conditions
in all climates; containing neither calomel nor any
deleterious drug, they may be taken with safety
by anybody. Their sugar-coating preserves them
ever fresh, and makes them pleasant to take, while
being purely vegetable, no harm can arise from
their use in any quantity.
They operate by their powerful influence on the
internal viscera to purify the blood and stimulate
it into healthy action remove the obstructions
of the stomach, bowels, liver, and other organs of
the body, restoring their irregular action to health,
and by correcting, wherever they exist, such de
rangements as are the first origin of disease.
Minute directions are given in the wrapper on
the' b'cfk, for the following complaints, which these
Pills rapidly cure:
For ]l,r«pV|wia or Indlgvution, Lintlms*
n«*MM, Languor and JL«mm of Appetite, they
should be taken moderately to stimulate the stom

For IA v«*r Complaint and its various symp

ache, Iddiiilice or Green Sickness, Bil

be judiciously taken for eacli case, to correct the
diseased action or remove the obstructions which
cause it.
For Ilysentery or Diarrhoea, but one
mild dosp is generally required.

action of the system. With such change those
complaints disappear.

to produce the effect of a drastic purge.
For Suppression a large dose should l>e

promote digestion and relieve the stomach.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and
bowels into healthy action, restores the appetite,
and invigorates the system. Hence it is often ad

One who feels tolerably well, often finds that a
dose of these Pills makes hhn feel decidedly bet
