who have favored-us heretofore will eon*

or expense will he spared in future to make
it a first-class weekly.. Having heralded
truth and the news for tWelv* (ninths, we
feel it unnecessary to say much in the war

Toe Late Negko Convention at New
Ohleans.—The ileratd’s New 0> leans cor

negro equality convention in that city as
follows,:
Upon the whole it has not been a politi
cal success. It' effectually demonstrates

the lesson taught, by the convention, but
is the confession of all the m<-re intelligent
members with whom, during the session, I
have conversed upon this point ; they are
just as subject to local and personal influ
ences as the whites.
The Savttuuah Morning News.
The old axiom to the effect that enterprise
and energy are bound to tell; h*s never been
more aptly, illustrated than in the recent
career of that vigorous Ge rgia newspaper,
the Savannah Morning Naws. An id**a has
heretofore prevailed that there is no field
in the South for live, en-erpriring journal
ism. This idea, however, has been most
thoroughly dispelled by the energetic con
ductors of ihe Morning News. Some months
ago, when the News inaugurated the series
of special teleqy»p‘'icdispatches, independ
ent of the Associated Press report, which
have been so popular with both its readers
and its exchanges, the effort was essentially
experimental, but only a few weeks experi
ence was necessary to prove that the people
were willing to reoognixe and support any
attempt to furnish them with the latest and
freshest intelligence.
The Morning News, however, although
one of the most popular and prosperous
daily j urnals in the South, is hy no means
anew enterprise. Many of otir readers
whose memories date back twenty years,
will remember tbe News us a leading Geor
gia in that day. They will r* member,
also, that the Neva has always been eon
•tstentjintjl persistent |in the mai’r'i ainiibcfe
of Conservative TJoirernutional principles,-
and a firm and unwavering advocate of the
rights and interests of the S' nth —a record
of whioh any journal may well he proud.
The editorial chair is filled by Col. W T.
Thompson, the well-known author of “Mr
rj )T'*Jo«es*' Courtship,’*, whose o nnection
with the paper dates from the first number.
Ci 1. Thompson D assisted in the editorial
department by Mr. J. C. Harris, whose
racy epitome of “Affairs in Georgia,*’ is so
popular w ith tbe readers of the News. Iu
addition, there is employed a full and effi
cient corps of local, marine and commercial
reporters
We bate good reason to believe that the
features whioh have achieved for the News
its present leading positions among South
ern journals will not only be continued, but
improved upon, and to those of our readers
who desire a liv**, reliable, and vigorous
and wide awake newspaper, we most heart
ily commend the News. They have a choice
of three editions—tbe daily, tri weekly and
weekly—each models in their way. The
pr.ee of tbe daily is $lO a year, or $5 fur
six months ; of the tri-weekly, $6 a year cr
$3 for six

Is visiting Atlanta this week, we noticed
that business there was dull as well as at
other pi tees. The Kimball H >use seems to
be a nucleus around which other large and
commodious business houses are being con

be the Cincinnati of the S uth.

is certainly a treat to one who loves to .look
