11 ' jU, Hlon Garden gives the following
'ii. iiilcs of the Royal Horticultnral Soci
'Y i the presentation of choice fruit:
A s i be llavor of fruit is so easily affected

1 -e.-iiable that apple and pear rooms should
be distinct.
-• l lie walls and the floor should be an
'"Vi.lv washed with a solution of quicklime.
.' ' room should be perfectly dry,
as uniform a temperature as practicable,
and be well ventilated; but there should not
be a thorough draft.
4, Use thr utmost care in gathering fruit,
handling as little as possible.
5. For present use fruit should be well
ripened; but if for long keeping, it is better,
especially with pears, that it should not
have arrived at complete maturity. This
point however, requires considerable judg
ment.
(5. No imperfect fruit should be stored
with that which is sound, and all more or
less decayed specimens should be immedate
ly removed.
7. If placed on shelves the fruit should
not lie more than two days, and no straw
should be used,
8. Where especially clear and beautiful
specimens are wanted they may be packed
crarefully in dry bran, or in layers of per
fectly dry cotton wool, either in closed boxes
or in large garden pots. Scentless sawdust
will answer the same purpose, but. pine saw
dust is apt to communicate an unpleasant
taste'
ft. With care, early apples may be kept
till Christmas; while many kinds maybe
preserved in perfection to a second year.
The rules given by American fruit grow
ers agree very well with the above, but
make especial mention that fruit rooms for
slow ripening should be nearly dark, and
the temperature low. Light and heat hast
en maturity, and next, of course, decompo
sition.
