Stanley Matthews is intriguing at "Wasli

Democrats. W T e fear he is wasting shoe
leather and gray brain matter, for it is but

have its adv tcaics and opponents according
to the dhlerent standpoint* fiom which it is
viewed. Our notion-are about these: There
are two tbiigs of w.iich .lie people are
heartily tired namely, taxes and elec'ions.
Now if a convention will correct tin se
grievous evils, we say let it come. This is
proposed to be done by culling down the
salaries of government officials, cutting off
state aid to railroads and other co-o;Aerations,
and by reducing <he number of officials in
all the departments. But there is one thing
safely recorded; unless these offices cm he
filled by honeoT men to the entiie exclu

no matter if they should reduce the whole
concern to one office, a way will always be
provided to consume ali of their money
and yet a hungry growl for more. What
wc“ want is this: Simple general laws;
our s ate debt paid by the taxes leyied, at
the earliest possible peri.nl; such laws as
will invite capital into our midst in good
security to the people a ai.ist morbid high
