Improve the midnight hour !
Ensconced upon the roof he yawps
With all his feline power.
And now another Thomas cat,
Eneouraged by the sound,
Semis up a challenge to his toe
To meet him on the ground.
And still another—and a fourth,

While fretted mortals toss and moan
Throughout the dismal night.

Aye, marry, or the jack ?
They scamper off, but, in an hour,
Come smiling, yawping back.

Two years ago—what high resolves

A host of noble deeds !
Now life lr. vain.
The sun Is blotted out. The world
Is stern and cold.
It feels no pity— hears no sigh
Of grtet untold.
Two years ago it was not thus
Ah. no. the light,
Beamed radiant o’er my cottage home
Love made It bright!
O weary heart! Watt on the Lord,
For promised rest.
In two more years thy home may be,

Oh its Here ! Evidently Here ! —We
mean the mating season. Oue day last week
a powerfully built young man, to whose
arm was linked a tall thin girl of eighteen,
entered one ot our dry good stores with both
eyes brim full of business, As the pair took
seats a clerk intimated that he was ready to
take the bottom price on any goods in the
store from the finest silk to the glaziest cali
co.
“This is a kind of a delicate business tor
us,” replied the young man casting a sheeps
eye at the girl.
“That is to say—that is— yes ahem!”
Stammered the clerk.
“But I guess we will live’ through it
Molly and so here goes. What we want is
a trossy tor this here gal—a bridal trossy I
believe they call it.”
“That is exactly what they call it.” re
plied the clerk, “and tell me what articles
you want now and I’ll give you the lowest
figures on them.’’
The pair looked at each other in a halt
foolish way tor a minute and then the girl
hid her face behind a stack of goods.
“A little skeery, but guess she will git
over it sorter directly,” mused the lover.—
“The fust thing I spose is a dress.”
“From one to sixteen dresses as you like
Perhaps you wul take a black silk in youis. ”
“Pr’aps I won’t. Thar aint no style
about us mister. We are gwine to marry
for love and we have got to make a little
money go a long ways. Is calaco purty
low?”
“Oh Zoka 1” gaspad ths girl suddenly
showing her face.
“Well we’ll go a little better then, but
calaco is my motto. Hand out somethin
about twenty cents a yard. Givo us dtve
color, for dovss ars meek and lovely and so
is Molly,”
Tireoty yards of dove colored (pods were
cut off and Zeke looked around and said:
“Less see. I spose a black conib, two
yards of blue ribbon, a bunch of hair pin**
and a collar ought to figger in some whar.”
The clerk agreed mad they were “fleger*
ed” in.
“Less see. She’ll wear her sister’s hat to
stand up in and her sister's shoes won’t
show if she has on a long dress. I guess
that’s all aint it Molly f ’
The girl blushed very red and beckoned
him closer and after a minute he turned to
the clerk and said:
“Its kinder throwin money away, but
she’s a purty good gal and I don’t mind it
so much on that account. She thinks she
ought to have a fifty cent corset and a pair
of red striped stxskiags.”
Th* articles were inspected and placed
with the “trossy” and after the lovers held
another whispered coversation, Zeke observ.
ed:
“Well that’s aIL Figger up aed there’s
your money We have got to go down to
Oiiphant & Hannah’s and git some hair oil,
a pur of sieve buttons and some shoe strings
and you see the outfit is going to squeeze
sne bad.”
“When does the marriage coins off!”
asked the clerk.
“In about ten days She’s a good gal and
loves me. and I’m trying to do the fhlr thing
by her Taint many young men that would
put as much as seven dollars in a bridal tros
sy for his gal, but when I make up my
mind to marry any one I am almost reckless
of wealth. She didn’t need the corset any
more than I need suspenders but she had a
sister married with one on, and she didn’t
want to be behtnd her.”
“Well sir I hope you will be happy.”
* ‘By the eternal God we are bound to be
we can’t help it. This gal can sling more
enthusiasm into a mess ot talers than any
gal in Upson county. I hail to take her old
dad by the collar and jerk his heels to the
ceiling before he would consent to this mar
riage—but lie did and you see we are a fixin
for it regardless of cost.”
“Well sir, good bye.”
“Good bye.”

Lumpkin, Ga., April 25th. 1877.
We the undersigned citizens of Stewart

take pleasure in saying toour neighbors and
friends, that our utmost conceptions of a per
