is favorably known to the press.

Watermelon Rind Preserves. —Pare
the green and soft white part oft the rind;
cut into narrow strips; soak over night in
moderately strong salt and water, in which
a very little alum has been dissolved. Then
soak in tresli water till pertectly fresh.
Steam until a straw will run through. Take
an equal weight of chrushed sugar, lay the
pieces on a dish and sprinkle very thorough
ly over them. In a few hours turn of the
syrup aud boil and skim it; put the water
melon in with the juice and rines of two
lemons previously boiled into very little
water. Boil till clear, take out and boil the
syrup till thick.
We do with pleasure call the attention of
our readers to the new “ad” of our live mei
chants, Messrs. Louis and Sterling Pritch
ard in another column. They are now re
ceiving tlie ; r Fall stock of goods and offer
extra inducements to cash customers. By
their Sterling (and Louis too) integrity and
uniform courtesy and politeness to their
customers, they have built a large trade for
themselves Each ot them is possessed of
an indomitable energy and perseverance
They sell their goods at a short profit and
thus they thereby sell a heap of them—
“ Quick sales aud short profits” being their
motto. We do unhesitatingly reccommend
them to the public and hope the good plant
ers will patronize them liberally during the
fall and winterr
A Severe Winter.— lt is the opinion of
the weather-wise that the approaching win
ter will be one of the most severe that we
have experienced in many years. Unmis
takeable evidences all point in that direction.
It behooves our farming friends, then, to
save everything they can in the shape of
provender for their stock, that the crib may
not be resorted to too early in the season.—
This feeding from the crib as soon as the
corn is gatherned is a common error with
many farmers, and one that has a tendency,
as much as any we know of, to make ac
counts grow, involve them in debt, and ren
der stock “mighty thin” during the sum
mei months. A little reflection about the
matter will demonstrate the correctness of
our statement.
The Revenue agent, Mr. Brown, was in
town this week collecting the tax on “old .
peach” and from what we learn he did not
like much of collecting the full worth of all
the brandy Several of our best citizens of
fered him all that they had made if ho :
would but release them of the tax with
which hc had them charged. It seems that
a few weeks ago a guager, a Air. Smith,
came through the county taking the dimen.-
tions of the casks. He reported the number
of casks that each man had and the number
ot gallons each cask would hold. Now the
collector comes along and charges 90 cts per
gallon on the brandy, allowing 10 gallons ot
mobby for one of brandy and not allowing
anytliiny for the half filled casks and leak- i
age during fermentation. Is it right?

C. 11. Corbin Arrested.— On the 23rd
of March last Mr. C. II Corbin was brought
before Justice Blackburn, charged by the

ceny after trust. He was committed by the
Justice and gave bond for his appearance at

Last ,veek ids bondsmen ascertained that
he was in Atlanta, and at once offered a !

The warrant last Friday was handed to Mr. I

A Wooden-legged Grasshopper
While sitting at our window writing the
other day, we perceived a grasshoper which
had lost a portion of one of its hind legs,
and in consequence of this loss its locomma
tion was defective. Every time it went to
hop the body would fall to one side. Per
ceiving this and that there was a stump ot
the leg still remaining, we captured the un
fortunate iuseef, and after manufacturing a
wooden leg with our knife, attached it to
the aforesaid stump aud sent him on his way
rejoicing, We have not seen him since,
and it any of the Sun’s readers come across
the woodcn.-legged grasshopper they will
confer a favor by letting us know how the
artificial appliance opperates at this late
date.— Griffin Sun.
Thanks Bio., Handliter. for your kind
ness. That very insect isoue ot the citizens
of Upson that was unfortunately caught in
the recent disastei on the Upson Cos , ft. R,,
that occurred near The Rock Throwing
trains from the track is a penal offense and
to us it§ a wonder that old Wad ley has not
taken out a warrant for said grasshopper.—
Look out frogs !
Accompanied by our congenial friend and
clever young riierchant, Mr. John J. Oli—
pliat we made a flying trip ouer into Meri
\ weather county Thursday, via Blackviiie.
i We think the crops in this portion of the
county are very good—much beetter than in
‘lie eastern and northern portions of the
county. We notice that our Methodist
friends are progressing rapidly with their
new church, at Blackviiie. It will be quite
commodious and beautiful when finished.
We would also make special mention of the
| condition ot the roads for the tirsi thirteen
; miles—very good indeed. The eversesrs
aud citizens along the line have certainly
been alive to their duty
After leaving Blackviiie we scaled the
mountains, cross the River and were soon
at the residence of cur kind friend Mr. Jas.
J. Altord, where we spent a couple of hours
; —enjoying a sumptuous dinner aud refresh
ments during the time. In this section the
I crops are good—especially the river bottoms.
’ The good planters in this portion cf the
county are independent, thrifty and happy,
and there are many pretty homes with fruits
| and flowers scattered through this vale of
fertile Meriweather. These good people are
noted for their hospitality aud ’twas with
much reluctance that we left them so soon.
Our ride home was indeed quite pleasant
aud the sweet thought ot having gained
several new subscribers was quite consoling.
! We hope to pay those good people a more
lengthy visit some of these days.

A. Plkaant Sociable.— Tuesday even
ing last wc bad the pleasure ot attending
the sociable given by the Misses Johnson to
our young friends of the Southern Calendar
Clock Cos. To congratulate the young la
dies would only be reiterating the feelings
of every one in attendance during the even
ing. Language is certainly inadequate to
express or superlatives depict the enjoyment
of the occasion.
Hardly had the hour of nine been told by
the tongue of time before the throng of
pleasures votaries had assembled and music
floated upon the ambient air. And then oc
casionally the laugh of a beauty, richer and
sweeter than all instrumental music combin
ed, would fall upon a fellow's ear aud set
him to dreaming cf heaven. Truly,
“The night was filled with music
And the cares that lnlest the day.
Folded their tents tike Arabs
And silently stole away,”
After feasting on ice cream, cake and oth
er goodies, we again returned to the parlor
where many tell, tale blushes sho wed words
had been spoken which uttered all soul, —
But as we do not wish to make anyone
nervous, or divulge what our eyes observed
we will say no more.
At eleven the several couples begun to
disperse, each one feeling that,
•There are moments in life which will never be
forgot,
They will brighten and brighten as time steals
away.
They wilt give anew cha**-> to the happiest lot..
And shine on the gloom of the lonliest day.”
The State Fair —We are glad to see an
interest being awakened in our next State
Fair which commences in Atlanta on the
15th of October, aud we hope it will prove
a grand success. We fear, however, that
that the advertising is not of such a charac
ter as to produce that enthusiasm among the
people which is so desireable. Had we had
the management of the advertising we should
have reversed the order and given the week
ly paper the large display advertisements
and the smaller ones to the da.ily press. The
reason for this should be obvious to every
one who understands the art of attracting
public attntioii through the press. In the
first place, short, concise hints are all that is
necessary to reach city readers or business
men, and the cost is much less. But for
country readers who have more time and
arc not so familiar with details it is necessa
ry to give full particulars, the more the
better, in order to establish an interest in
their minds Besides in the country week
lies the cost is much less lor advertising
than it possibly can be in a daily. There
are other good reasons why advertising of
the fair should be very liberal, but as they
are of a nature which appeal to tho self in
terest of the country newspaper man we
wilt not mention them. Advertise or not
advertise, for the good and honor of the
State we wish the Fair to be a success.
