THE FIREMEN’S PARADE.
Thomasville in Smiles and Tears—Sun
shine and Showers—A rousing crowd
from Bainbridge-A Magnificent Din
ner at the Gulf Boad House-The Press
--The Ball, &c.
The eventful and long looked for
6th, has come and gone.
Notwithstanding that appearances
indicated the rain that fell in such
torrents during the afternoon, the
boys defied wind and weather, and
was busily engaged during the fore,
noon in putting the finishing touches
to their Engines, Txucks and Hose
Carriages.
Notwithstanding the vigilance of
our Fire Brigade and their being on
the alert, their guests from our pleas
ant neighboring town of Bainbbridgc,
come very near stealing a march on
them, by the train coming in ahead of
time. At the sound of the whistle,
the gay firemen moved at a double
quick, preceded by the Band to the
depot, where they were drawn up in
line, the Neps on the right whilst Capt.
Paine came to the Rescue on the left
The Bainbridge delegation disembark
ed, leaving their fair cliargcs in the
coach, and whose bright eyes flashed
witli pride, ns the splendid l»ody of
representing the Fire Depart
ment of their own fair city were drawn
up in line by their gallant young
Chief, confronting the Thomasville
firemen. After formal courtesies the
veterau Foreman of the Neps stepped
to the front and welcomed the guests
as only McGlashan can. Ben Russell,
who is ever ready with speech or quill,
accepted the offered courtesies in a
tow short pertinent remarks.
After these formalities were ended,
the ladies, who had been interested
listeners to both the address of wel
come and the response, were taken in
charge, by a delegation of our ladies
and the committee appointed for that
purpose, and driven to the vario
private residences in the city to which
they had been invited. The Neps
took charge of the “Peabody” Hose
carriage, carried it to their Engine
House, where it was handsomely dec
orated with some of our fairest flow-
ao eloquently of fair woman* presence.
Everything wore that peculiar charm
that the ladles have fhe happy faculty
imparting to everything they touch.
We are sure that we but tpeak the
sentiments of all who were present,
when we say that the entire affair in
every detail was carried out in the
most perfect manner. We congratu
late the gentlemanly managers upon
their well deserved success.
At 5.30 next morning the Ncptunea
were on hand at the depot to bid their
parting guests “good-bye.” Before
leaving, the “Stonewalls” through Mr.
Ben Russell, presented the Neptunes
with a handsome flag, which was ac
cepted by their Foreman, who had a
speech ready even at this early hour
in the morning. Amid the cheers of
the Thomasville firemen, the guests
were whirled away, and we trust, car
rying with them pleasing recollections
of our place.

Important Ciiaxge.—Tne time of
holdiug our next annual fair, has been
changed from the 2Sih of October: as
previously announced in the Times, to
2\iesday the 4tU day of xov. This
change was made by the board of Di
rectors, on ihc 7th, in consequence ot
the State Fair at Macon, having been
changed from tho 4th of Nov., to the
2Sth of Oct. We regard tills action of
the board, as a wise and Judicious one,
ns we will bo enabled, if the proper
steps are teken, to secure a large num
ber of exhibitors, at the Slate fair.
They can ccmc from Macon directly
here; with goods and machinery. We
presume that a liberal arrangement,
can be made with the South-western
Rail Road. Wc know, the Atlantic
and Gulf, will act the same generous
part, by our Fair that shtfhas iu the
past.
Crops Weather &c.—From what
wo can gather from our planting
friends, the growth of crops ha3 been
somewhat impaired by the dry weath
er of the past three weeks, but now
they have had copious showers, which
we thiukhavc been pretty general,
and the farmers are begining to feel
petter;notwithstanding they fear grass
will grow as well as cotton, they cau
by work kill that, but not dry weather.
Com is looking healthy now and not
withstanding the blow about heavy
Guano purchases, we guess, Thomas
county, on an average, will make corn
sufficient toln$ on.
Thanks.—We are indebted to Hose
squad No. 1, for somo bcautilul
wreathes and boquets, which were
prepared for their Hose Carriage, on
the occasion of the late parade. The
flowers are fading boys, bnt your
, kindness will be kept fresh and green,
fa the ewro-hcusc of memory.
The entire body of firemen were in
vited by the Rescues to the spacious
Hall occupied by the Neps, on Broad
St. 7/erc one of those reunions occur
red that only occur with fireman. The
Rescues punched everybody, right and
left, washed it down with any other
kind ol liquid, and smokol the entire
party. Dr. Wardell, taking advan
tage of a lull in the cross-firing that
oiug on, read a very humorous
poem apropos to the occasion, which
elicited rounds of hearty applause.
One o'clock being the dinner hour the
party made their way to the Gulf Road
Home.
Wc think that wc done ample jus
tice to the really elegant repast, spread
by our friend Parnell, at the tabic, hut
wc arc not competent to the task of
describing it. Ilia Honor, the Mayor,
with tho Board of Aldermen, was
lmml, as was also a number of special
ly invited guests, including, of tour*
the Press. They arc always on hand
on these occasions, and 011 this one.
we cheerfully testify to the capacity
of our Senior, Chastain, and Charley
Pendleton for putting things out 0/
sight. During this interesting part of
the programme, (wc were very busy
at this time) wc lost sight of Russell
and Johnson, of the Democrat, but
from accounts, they acquitted them
selves with great credit.
Tho muttering thunder and the hea
vy rain-drops that came pattern);
down at 1 o'clock, iudicatcd (as it
proved to be) a steady evening
Notwihstanding tho continued rain
our Department Officers ordered the
force into line on Broad ft, at 4
o'clock. Under a driving rain tho boy
manfully waded through mud and
water, pulling their beautifully decor
ated apparatus after them. After the
inspection, which was gone through
with, with all the precision of a Milita
ry parade, the German Reading Club
not to be out done by other organiza
lions, in extending the hospitalities of
the place, invited the boys in red, to
their elegantly furnished rooms below
l'lclchcr st. Here again for an hour
did wit and wine flow. The Germans
arc noted for the manner in which
they care for and speed partin:
guest's, and wc venture that our
friends in B., will carry back with
them pleasant memoriesofour German
Reading Club.
As the sable curtain of night was
drawn around us, still the rain poured
in torrents; notwithstanding which,
our gallant firemen, not to be out done
by the very element which they
for the protection of others, might
have been seen busily intcrvicivin;
Livery men and carriage drivers. By
0.30 o'clock the upper hall of the Court
room was well filled. The Orchestra
struck up a grand march and the Ball
was opened. The dancing continued
until 12 o'clock, when refreshments
claimed the attention for a short time
of gay the Terpsiclioreans. This like
everything else attempted by tho Man
agers was perfectly arranged in the
most minute detail. A very pleasing
incident occurred just at this time
showing how firmly firemen arc knit
together. Mr. I. ltoscnfcld ou behalf
of the “Peabody IIosc," holding ii
hand a handsome silk banner upon
which was inscribed “Excelsior," step
ped into tho middle ot the hall and
presented it to their host's the Neps,
iu a very felicitous speech, replete with
happy thoughts and ideas. The flag
was received by Mr. W. E. Davies
who eloquently portrayed the common
dangers,* and brotherly feeling that
ever characterizes true firemen. Dan
cing was soon after resumed and kept
up until 2 o'clock a. m.
Wc will not attempt a description
of the vast hall, with its hundreds of
feet of beautiful wreathes hanging in
graceful festoons from pillar to pillar,
and around the room, with rich and
rare exotics at every turn; whilst
elegant paintings adorned the walls.
Mottoes, monograms and emblems
met the eye everywhere appropriate
to the occasion. On every hand was
seen those delicate touches that speak
Our Side Walks.—It very forcibly
occurred to ns, on the day ot the Fire
Parade, outside of hearing the remarks
made by some of oar visitors, more times
than once too, “that such a thriving
and prospective city as Thomasville
ought to have belter sidewalks.” Wc
don’t know whose province it is to
keep them in order, whether the city
authorities or the owners of property,
if the latter we think the Council
should be the judge of the manner of
keeping them up, and see that they
are kept up. 2 hey are all right in
dry weather it is true, and might be
in a snow storm, but let a healthy rain
come and there are some places, on
Broad Street at that, where a battcau
would come m very handy. In front
of Hirt’s shoe shop for instance, it is
wade or no go. But with as wide
awake city fathers as we have, we
guess a hint is sufficient.
It is true wc are not a city yet; but
when Fletcher Institute rears a hand
some Male College, when that pala
tial Hotel blocks up Mr. Mitchell's
handsome corner, when the Gulf Road
extended to Pollard and locates its
rast machine shops here, then wc may
lie a city, and we had as well begin
now to put on city appearances and
habits, to this extent at least.
A Bright and Happy Day for
the Sahbatli School Children.
As announced in oui last issue, the
threatening weather prevented the
original programme, from being car
ried out on the day previous, but
the next (Saturday) nature was
wreathed, in her softest and sunniest
hues. The morning was ushered in,
by a bright clear sky, an augury of
the lovely day that followed.
\s early as 8 o’clock the hundreds of
children, was tripping joyously toward
ihc common rendezvous, the Presby
terian church; forgetful of the disap
pointment of the day before, with
laughing eyes, glistening with happy
sccntillations of pleasure, that only
children feel on an occasion like this.
By 0 o’clock the largest number, of
bright sparkling eyes, that was ever
gathered inside the walls of the Pres
byterian chutth, at one time, had col
lected aud eagerly awaited the action
of the gentlemen, having the pro-
ramme in charge.
The Thomasville Band, headed by
their leader in elegant, tasty uniforms,
had in the meantime made their ap
pearance. A few minutes after nine,
this army of little soldiers, was put iu
line by Col. McGlashan, who has set
many a squadron iii the field. On the
historic plains of Gettysburg, Chaoccl-
lorsville, and all around our late be
leaguered capital, has the gallant Col.
led the glorious old 50th. With
thousand proud recollections, cluster-
around this brave body of Geor-
s choicest sous, wc doubt, however
if the Ex-Confederate officer, did not
tccl as conscious a glow of pride, and
his heart swell with as noble, and pa
triotic emotions, when he put
tion this Brigade of little soldiers, as
he ever did heading his gallant com-
and, when victory or defeat huug iu
the balance, and a nations destiny was
at stake.
The procession moved up Jacksou
to Broad, thence up Broad. to the
Methodist church, to the iuspiriu;
uotes of the Band.
wing to engagements, Col. McCall
unable to be present; his place
however was filled by the Rev. Mr.
McGchec, who was followed by Col,
McGlashan, in his own inimitable
itylo.
Here three hundred, sweet childish
voices chimed iu, and swelled out in
one volume of 6ouud, the beautiful
festival songs, selected for the occa
sion. Their very discords were melody.
The exultant happy voices, of this
throng of children will long ring in
the cars of those who heard them.
After the exercises were over at the
Church, tho different Schools were re
formed, aud marched iu procession to
the grove opposite Mr. H. B. Ains
worth’s. Here a splendid collation,
qwaited the onset of this little army
aud right gallantly, but orderly, did
they make the charge, and only fell
back, after they had assaulted the en
tire line. To say that everything was
in perfect order, and arranged just
exactly as it should be, is but a faint
tribute to the ladies, who worked from
early morn until noon, in arranging
and preparing the tables. The three
hundred feet of tabling, lairly groaned,
under the many good things, contribu
ted so liberally by the citizens. It was
a pleasing contrast to the jars and
discord, that sometimes unfortunately
mar church relations, to sec all the
denominations, Methodist, Baptist.
Presbyterian, and Episcopal, all ming
ling pleasantly together, aud joininj
in the same sweet hymns of praise.
May we not hope, that each success
ive anniversary, will but bind these
tender young hearts more firmly to
gether, and that they will grow up with
broad Catholic views, discarding the
narrow, selfish ideas, that have in some
instances characterized the past. We
cannot close our account of this
most enjoyable affair, more happily
than by quoting the concluding para
graph, of our cotemporary on the same
subject.
To the Ladies.—The young gen
tlemen in charge of the decoration of
the Court House, requests us to pre-
seut their very grdtciul acknowledge
ments, to the following ladies, who so
kindly assisted in the work; and by
timely contributions of flowers &c.
Misses. Laura Coyle, Fannie Hansel],
Maud Bick, Julia Alexander, Cynthia
McLean, Etta Reid, Mattie Seward,
Tcdic Hopkins, Bessie Merrill,
Little and Curry; also to Mrs.
L. C. Bryan, Mrs, A. Jcrger, aud Mrs.
Armstrong.
The Hose squad arc also indebted
to, and return their thanks, to two ot
Dawson Streets fair ones, Misses Ella
McKinnon and Mittle Mitchell, for
one of the most elegantly decorated
carriages, that we have ever seen.
“May we have many such pleasant
co-operations of the churches inThom-
asville, and may those kind hearted
ladles, whose practical 1 ands arranged
eve filling so well, never be missing,
nor without the same able corps of as
sistant young men. ”
' Mr. L. F. Thompson, has shown
samples of his own and Tennessee
meal. We have a very high opinion
of anything coming from the old Vol
unteer State, but wc must admit, that
Luthers sample appeared to us to be
Superior.
